I remember watching VOD of some TDM game on the Edge and there were like 3 or 4 overtimes. Don't remember what teams or what tournament (there were commentators and huge crowd screaming) but it was totally crazy and definitely one of the most exciting VODs of any game ever. Hope someone will know this match and will post link

I'd say that toxjq vs av3k is a lot nicer (there are more vids of the same tourney up as well)

Having never played q4 before I must say the gameplay looks nice, somewhat faster than vq3/ql yet slower than qw/cpm.

What were the main reason it failed so hard?

BTW, big props to decebal01US for uploading/"creating" all those VODS, really enjoying watching them.

1) It ate hardware. You needed a very decent machine to get it to run smoothly.

2) It was full of bugs in the beginning (still has issues), like when you switched to lg and away from it, the LG hum would stick to some place of the map and hum on forever. And it liked to crash often.

3) You would need to have all files the server had to connect successfully (can't remember if it was a admin issue or unavoidable).

4) until the 1.4 patches is was locked on 60 fps (many people had crts still).

5) took (and takes) ages to load.

6) The last big q4 tour broke down in the middle after some often horrible administered events leaving some very bad feelings which were blamed on q4 (as we know now, that were just the first eruptions of the whole fps-esport busisness).

Although the gameplay is good, it at least to me never felt as "quakish" as q3 or qw

However, although this may make some dudes rage, I think it was the most demanding Quake for 1v1 so far (faster and more complex movement then q3, harder to aim after 1.4, weaponrespawn 15 on all maps, q3 ammo system).

Actually I think id's bad experience with q4 in the later state (they really worked a lot on it), seeing it's harsh decline after the last patch which included many improvements like q4tv (gtv for q4) are a reason why they don't provide gtv for ql ("It didn't do anything food for q4, did it") and going in the opposite direction gameplaywise (like that silly ammo system and tl 10 etc, imo).

it was a failure at release but most points were fixed by patches and q4max. Maybe it would have been much more popular if things didnt went wrong at release.

q4max manage to make it much less hardware demanding which is awesome.

for me the deal breaker was the sluggish feel on the weapons. the rocket launcher felt like it did in Q2 and i hate that.

Horrible quality and weirdly-narrow FOV on those VODs, but yeah, that was a great set. All the tournaments in late 2006 on 1.3 PR (WCG, Digital Life, WSVG) produced some of the best 1v1 matches I've ever seen. Shame most of the VODs are gone now; lots of them were hosted on Brightcove.tv which closed in 2008, and I doubt anybody saved all the demos.

I always liked the way q4 duel looked and played out.

From someone who knows quake :

1. Quake 4 got a netcode enhancing in 2008 with q4max 0.82.
2. Quake 4 got 125 fps in 2009.
3. Quake 4 max skill level increased drastically from 2006-2007 to 2010-2011. If you were semipro = low skill. Pro = mid skill.
4. Many q3 and ql players cant learn crouchsliding, and even basic movement in q4 is much more complicated.
5. God of War Sanchez still remains unbeatable.
6. Main q4 event WSVG died because they started doing sims cybersport.
