I'm a bit shocked this is the game QL pros are (apparently) flocking to. They must know something that we don't, i wish there was more solid info available about it. As it is it looks a bit boring, but obviously this is not the finished product.

I really hope it won't kill the top tier of QL competition, but it certainly looks like it, looking at the attendance list.

The game is new, that means the general playing level is not very high. That in mind they will probably have the highest chance to win with the quake experience they already gained.
Who knows if they will keep playing it for long.. maybe they will stop when it is not profitable enough anymore when taking a certain effort.

I get that, it's just that this isn't exactly a lot of money, even for the small effort. Nobody seemed to want to do this for UT3, even though there was plenty of easy money up for grabs - and UT3 seems far closer to Quake than this shitty game.

Shootmania looks far worse than UT3, but that's not the point. You can compare them both as "bad" compared to Quake, but if the reason people are going to play it is for money, you'd think that they would have done the same thing for UT3 when it came out. They didn't, so it's quite puzzling why anyone is interested in playing Shootmania at all.

Because there was other events during the UT3 time, plenty for Quake. Plus this game is designed for e-sports, and UT3 wasn't. There was no real reason to support UT3, but there is for Shootmania.

There weren't many events going on when UT3 came out, and I'm sure the UT3 tourneys rarely conflicted with any Quake tourneys. This might be "designed for e-sports", but that doesn't make it any better for esports than UT3.

Anyone with a clue about the industry knows that Quake will have next to no events next year (which is already true now) and Shootmania will be doing very well. Shootmania already has had the same number of LANs this year alone compared to Quake, and the game is in alpha.

People like this aren't chasing the money, they just realize any effort put into Quake now will be worthless, because it won't be doing even close to what Shootmania will do in the future.

on Twitter it says the game isn't free and it's going to be a paid game (if i understood that right) so it might not have that bright of a future but who knows.

An article said it would cost $24.99, the same as Trackmania, and if you ask me that's pretty good. Yes it's not free-to-play, but I think that just invites more cheaters, and a bit more people.

If the game is good, there will be people playing it. I doubt $25 is going to stop someone from getting the game who actually really wants it.

But this game looks so noobish. Two weapons, big open maps, no items. One of the weapons is a fucking instagun. Only thing that looks good are the player-models. If they will implement a propper 1vs1 mode with several weapons (not asking for the usual rl/lg/rg/pg/gl stuff, can be totally new ideas), items and some kind of smaller maps (this mainly depends on the community since people can build their own maps) this game could turn out good. But right now it's just some boring medicore shit. The 3v3 mode is just not competitive, it's like CS 1.6 and CS:GO, GO is the arcade version made for little kiddies whom never played 1.6 while 1.6 is truely competitive game where you need skill and teamplay (still not as competitive as Quake but the comparison is quite accurate).

Still signed up for the Beta, maybe the game will actually turn out to be a decent replacement for Quake. And before someone starts to rant about how duel is dull and boring. We allready have CS 1.6, CS:S and CoD for teambased shooters, what we need is a good 1vs1 shooter because no game is as easy to understand as some good old deathmatch.

Not sure if you will be able to recreate stuff like items and weapons, since the game doesn't look as if it is intended to feature such stuff and it would require some more knowledge than throwing some blocks and pannels together (like you have to do in order to create a TM map). Quake Live has Qcon and DH, that's it. We need something else. There's nothing to look forward to except Quake 5 (might not happen), and this game, Shootmania.

Plus, the game is completely customizable. Map maker in the game, you can run your own servers, LAN servers, you can also modify gameplay and make your own mod for the game, all maps and mods go through ManiaPlanet, so you can see all user made maps and mods.

The game in it's alpha state right now doesn't look as good as Quake, but I heard they were toying with game modes with armors, plus it doesn't even matter because once the game is out you can mod it and make your own rules and game play. 1.6 alone thrives on the fact that you can make your own maps, mods, and servers. It's what keeps a game alive.

$25 is a good price, and the game obviously has good developer support, and it's being designed around e-sports.

It's probably a troll from the LAN-Staff to draw more attention to their event. It's the first SOPA-LAN so having Cypher and Co. invited to the tournament gives them some publicity, even if they won't attend it (and I'm pretty confident that they won't).

Btw: even if it's a 13k Tournament, not the whole money will flow into the 1st place and even then it would only be 13'000/3~4333€ because it is a 3vs3 tourney, so ShootMania isn't more lucrative than QL atm.

Judging shitmania a bit it is clear that the developers understand the concept of a minimum viable product:

First, add some randomness. An instagib rail is a nice way of doing it. Now even the worst player can get a lucky shot now and then. If you run enough rounds it won't matter to the top players but at the lower ranks the bad players might win a round of two.

Second, remove almost all weapons. Less weapons to learn. Less weapons to master. Easier entry point. Remove ammo as well now we are at it, but prevent spam by replenishment of ammo over time.

Third, kill all advanced movement. Again, we just lowered the skill entrypoint of the game.

Fourth, no items at all. We want to have a game not more advanced than CA, which is the level of complexity most players play at.

Fifth, place some okayish large prizepools to lure other FPS gamers to the game. Don't care about if they are quakers or COD players - that just makes it more random creating tension.

Sixth, add a map editor and make it easy to roll your own maps. This works because you don't have to use a lot of time building good maps. The great maps will come over time because players will make them. I.e., minecraft the fps genre.

This looks a lot like Warcraft 3 -> DOTA(2) -> LoL simplification to me.

On the other hand, since the developers understand MVP, it might be that they have a plan where they will gradually add the complexity over the course of some years, releasing a new game every 1.5 years say. That way, you can get an early group of dedicated young gamers and keep the group in the game by adding more and more features. You don't even have to do anything but look at Quake for inspiration.

Also, a reimplementation of Quake today is very hard, especially if you add in GTV-like features as well. There are so many small things like the comphud, passworded servers, ... you need to support as well in your game. It is not impossible, but it does take time. It might be that the initial focus was different when building the game.

And then it looks like they already have LAN-servers available :P

This game will make or break based on maps. The point is that you can build maps where certain weapons are only available when you stand on a certain block. For instance, you can only have a railgun when at spot X or Y.

The thing we don't know is: How advanced can we make the maps? If they can be made very advanced, then the complexity of the game is hidden in the map and how hard it is to play. That is actually a pretty nice way to skill-tier the game. At the lower tiers, you can have relatively "simple" maps where it is obvious what to do.

But at higher tiers, the maps can become complex, intricate, and full of different options. The question is really: can you build maps which can make up for quakes complexity in items, spawn control, timing, movement etc. If yes, it may replace quake. But if it does not reach the same level of tactics and strategy, I am betting it won't.

No, you cannot. Imagine the most intricate map ever, with the same movement and the same two weapons the game has. Can it create the strategy we have around the powerups in quake?

I certainly hope there will be more weapons and hopefully some items if this is going to be more popular than quake, but that would probably be detrimental to the game's popularity.

Theoretically, they could keep this shitty gameplay for newbies and create a quake duel-like mode for the hardcore, but I think I'm asking too much. If this ever becomes a chance though, we should push for it - in the same way QL could have been popular given a proper ladder and other features, this could too, and it could be ok-ish.

second thing you have to know : shootmania is just like trackmania, there will be several gameplays with different blocks of construction in the future. what you see here is called "shootmania : storm". maybe you will like more the upcoming titles. in trackmania some people hate the gameplay of "Coast" (each environment+original gameplay has a name) but worship the gameplay of "Stadium", it can be the other way around of course. so calm down, if you don't like "Storm" (that you haven't tried yet) you might like the next one. and we don't even know if there will be just 2 weapons in Storm.

Q3/QL is the definitive competitive FPS, you CAN'T surpass it, you start changing it a lot and the result becomes a reflection, a vague cheap shadow of the original Q3/QL vibe. Yes, QW and Q2 are amazing games, but with Q3/QL they got the perfect graphic aesthetics AND the right balance between speed and tactics.

If this shitgame is any popular is thanks to the MARKETING that these guys can do off a game. They made Trackmania world famous as an official "profesional competitive game". Only thing you need is ads, ads, and ads. Ideally a TV ad. Put a cool short fragmovie, put some trendy music that kids like, explain to kids this is the next level in competitive gaming, explain how you can travel the world making money playing the game, and throw some fucking competitive OPEN LAN tournaments with really juicy cash to win, in a way that you dont need to be top3 to get a decent price, but the top10 guy already gets a nice quantity. Put money into the goddamn marketing and tournaments. I guarantee you'll have kids starting to play Q3/QL.

IT'S ALL ABOUT MARKETING. You can make anything famous if done right. Obviously id fails at this. And thanks to it it could become the begining of the end of Quake.

If you want more tournaments you can host them yourself, including prize money, though I'd put my money on popular games (and developers) that have potential instead of Q3/QL.

I think people are missing the bigger picture too. This isn't just a game for DM players, it's a game for all FPS players. CS Pros were playing it at Gamers Assembly, W:ET veterans are playing it, Unreal Tournament players are into it, CoD players, everyone.

This is a game that can finally bring all those different type of FPS players together and playing one game. I think it would be amazing to play a game like this with two other Quakers and go against a team that were CS pros at a LAN.

I think going to a SM event will be different, it won't just be Quake players, it will be everyone. EVERYONE!
