My friend lives there, moved from SA. I don't think he ever came back. Judging from his posts on facebook, he looks pretty happy. Other than that I don't know anything about it. Still you can always move there and then move back if you don't like it.

The only problem is moving everything out there and coming back broke.

My parents aren't rich, they've worked all their life (nearly 40 years) and nearly paid off their mortgage.. Once the house is sold they'll have enough to build in Cyprus plus a little spare and a good pension.

well, my parents worked hard for 40 years, the one difference is that they lived in poland not uk :D

spend the next year planning your biz and saving funds, go with parents, open business, make some money, move out to your own place, find a girl, get married, have kids, teach them quake, be the next tony, etc, etc

Mortgage and some sort of career if I finally decide what to do, I'm on the fence about my current job as it is.

In my opinion, I think it really comes down to deciding what you want to do, not in just terms of uk vs cyprus, but in general for a career/business/life. Then you have to stick with it(the hard part for me !_!).

Like I believe you are doing some hobby web dev stuff to boost your skills in those areas, is that something you really enjoy and would want to make into a career? If you go to cyprus will that all be lost?

I would do it. You can make new friends everywhere so that's not an argument. Shitty internet depends on the place you live in and how much money you want to spend (like allways) plus UK has the most shittiest warp-internet I've ever seen (only 2-3 guys that I know from UK and play regularly have good stable ping and no packet loss, everyone else warps like hell).

However if you aren't going into the tourism branch you could end up worse than in the UK. So think about it :) I like the idea of Anhedonique. Why not try it for like 1 year or so?

Another negative: the heat. It's unbearably hot at times.

Any way. I travelled to Cyprus a few times while living in Turkey and I like it, but I have to admit it's a bit dull. Nicosia is a nice little town, surprisingly multicultural and I enjoyed it (my friends didn't). I think that would be my pick if I had to move there, even over Limassol, which is nicer as a tourist but it didn't have as much stuff going on I think.

The rest of the country is okay too:
- The beaches range from awful, to mediocre, to overexploited. Most villages and towns are beautiful. Apparently there are nicer beaches on the Turkish side, but I didn't wander too much around there.
- People are nice (despite the abundance of young douchebags). Everybody speaks English and I don't think you'll have any trouble making friends.
- Food is great with lots of seafood, Greek cuisine and all the immigrant stuff.
- Nightlife is quite bad. You have the whole Middle Eastern gender parity bullshit, boring clubs with no substance, etc. You can find some nice bars, though. Then there's Ayia Napa, which is as bad as Lloret or even worse.
- I don't know why you said it's expensive, but I found it quite cheap.
- There are cheap flights to most European countries, some Middle Eastern ones and Istanbul (from the Turkish side). It should be fairly easy for you to travel to bigger cities if you feel trapped in there.

I wouldn't be completely opposed to moving to Cyprus, but it's not a place I'd be stoked to live in and I have no idea what the business/career prospects are outside of tourism.


e: This is all assuming you are moving to the South. Turkish Nicosia is a depressing city, especially when you compare it to Cypriot Nicosia, but apparently the North has a really big expat community that swears it's a better retirement place because Greeks still feel some animosity towards brits or something. People talk great things about Kyrenia.

I've been Cyprus about 10 times, never the Turkish side though. My parents have an apartment on the out skirts of Paralmini, which I stayed in for 2-3 months a couple of years ago. Their house will be somewhere around their (I'm not sure where exactly).

I've been to: Larnaca, Limasoll, Nicosia, Ayia Napa, Protaras, Troodos Mountains, possibly Paphos but maybe when I was younger. I'd love to spend a few weeks exploring the island.

Some of the beaches are nice, others I found not so good.

Have you been since the Euro was introduced? It got expensive (i wouldn't say it was cheap before though, probably because I spent time in the tourist area's).

Ayia Napa is really a shit hole now-a-days, never really enjoyed the clubs there. I prefer to spend my time in Protaras, it's a bit smaller and feels more family ortientated, plus there are plenty of smaller villages with decent bars around it too.

Skiing in the Winter: ive been nicosia (middle of cyprus) during winter & never seen snow there...its not a big island either...probably just indoor place like uk has
Wages are low: chocolate is expensive. electronics too
No career: with less opportunities. i guess many expect you to speak greek
Poor Internet: they sometimes block shit like youtube too

just need to ask yourself why you really wanna go there. if its because you dont wanna be away from mommy & daddy then thread closed. if its adventure, can choose a better country & be independent. like germany, US etc

I really regret not going to Uni after A-Levels... I ended up getting in debt (car + credit cards) and always had bills to pay so I've never been able to think about going back to school.. I have nearly cleared my debts now so I guess it's a possibility.

I would have finished college, but I can't help it if one of the worlds best game devs wanted to employ me as a fighting game expert and then promote me to designer on the sequel to one of the biggest games of all time on natural ability and fly me to LA and pay me stupid amounts in royalty cheques.

go study in netherlands/germany. in .nl it is a literal fact that the "grass is always greener" :P

uni in germany is either free for foreigners or 1500quid/year...same for .nl~ experience abroad (in a better place than cyprus) and cheaper uni degree. id go with .de over .nl though

replying to your stuff at me: uk has swimming pools, you can also cycle. if you dont do it now then i doubt it will change unless your house will have a pool included (normal in north cyp)

i can see you spending just as much time indoors there too. hot weather is great during your 2 week holiday but when you have it year round while having to wear jeans or even office clothes to go to work then its gay

i dont see why you would see a better life in cyprus besides fantasies about the sun & sea, its shit with less opportunities than others & theyll speak greek (do you? thought so). you should go to america/stay in uk. or study in nl/de or something and learn the language during your studies

in my opinion, opportunities = people, you decide if cyprus is better in that regard than whereever you are right now in the uk.

regarding studying in .nl or .de, the grass won't be much green soon for foreigners and while .de indeed does not have uni fees we do have an increasing amount of 'handling charges' (?) which are usually around 400-600€ per term depending on your university. still, do a 3 year bachelor or something similar somewhere in europe instead of following your parents to their retirement home.

Huh? I never heard of that being the case at a state university since the abolishment of 'studiengebühren'.
It's ~60€ per term here (at a university in Baden-Wuerttemberg).

Good suggestion. Studying in eastern germany will lower your costs even more. Have a look at the university pages for Dresden or Leipzig for example. Learn german for half a year and enjoy three years of university life. !
