re-release on pc, why?

i read the comments on both sites, nobody has a clue like you and me. i think a pc re release is pretty useless.

and there was this problem that the german version was heavily cut (low violence version). no word if the german version this time will be uncut. but actually as a german player i give a fuck, i buy games in the uk (cheaper and uncut) or do proxy tricks for steam activation. but the sad thing was that the german version pc buyers could only join german servers xD i think until this day activision is to blame for that, not id.

it could be nice, since its goin to all the consoles as well. maybe servers start gettin full finally. (and the game is properly patched upon re-release)

quake is an amazing game in todays world of "realistic shooters", i like that it has "fun first" approach, i also like the approach of constantly changing setting of daikatana, finishing it was a blast, even though i might've done it only once for now. (btw sorry id for pirating your games)

well if they combined it with a new patch that brings gameplay back to something similiar to 1.3 and managed to revive the q4max team in order to have a competive mod available I would very much like to play some q4 again but since that's not gonna happen..

If the new release isn't compatible with 1.4.2 there will definitely be a new q4max release. I expect it would be compatible though and not need a new q4max build.

As for 1.3 gameplay, if I believed people would return to q4 for that it could be done, but we all know that wouldn't happen, so no point spending the time on it for 14 players.

i know now that it was a big error from us when id contacted the scene / all here / us, that we said to syncerror, no actually we shouted "we want quake 4 mp similar to quake 3 because we love quake3". it is our mistake.

The changes and advancements made in Quake 4's 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4.2 were great improvements.

I still to this day feel that the gameplay differences between 1.3 and 1.4.2 are greatly a matter of preference and would never think less of a player for their preference between 1.3 and 1.4.2. The truth is that 1.4.2 was overall a better tuned game, especially for the tournament scene available at the time. Players were simply too easy to hit in 1.3, lg was too dominating, etc. However, there will obviously be many players who liked the bigger hitboxes, liked dominating their opponents with the lg. :)

1.4.2 also introduced things like Q4TV, the ability to expand beyond the hardcoded 60 fps cap, server-side file/pak downloading, fixes to the addonpak systems, the Q4CMP (community map pak) which introduced a lot of outstanding community content in an official capacity.

In the end I think 1.4.2 offered a far superior product, and I don't regret reaching out to the community and listening to their suggestions and pleas for one moment.

wow, time goes by.. anyway, not that it matters much, but if I remember correctly people were pretty pleased with 1.3 gameplay whereas the movement changes introduced in 1.4.X led to a great number of annoyances on the already established maps. The pretty rapid decline in activity after the patch might say something about this matter as well but I realize there were other factors involved and I might not remember everything correctly.
would still be interesting to see how 1.3 gameplay combined with the technical advancements in 1.4 would feel like.

The problem with 1.4.2 is the physics ( both speed in general and the broken rampjumps ). At least, that's what the whine is about nowadays.

no 1.4.2 movement is better in ctf but maybe just because the maps fit better to the 1.4.2 movement speed.

Yes there were some situations when hitting stairs at full speed and then suddenly hitting the roof but I managed to avoid it.

I have to say q3 rocketjumping and edgecatching (or better edgecatching) + low viewheight is what q4 movement needs.

The most whine come from lg range decrease and rail dmg decrease (rail 100 dmg ftw). Monsoon at rail shooting with lg to nmy at rockets... I still think this distance was made for pr 1.3 lg range and now... lg just needs his range back without changing dmg, knockback or firerate. Oh and rockets are still like little nukes (huge splashdamage range).

To make q4 weaponbalance perfect it needs insta weaponswitch like cpma or at least like ql. This would fit to the movement speed. Oh did I mention to increase rail to 100dmg? :-) Its actually fair when a direct rocket can do 100 dmg.

Oh well, It's mostly duel maps that are broken by 1.4.2 rampjumps.

Can't change the viewheight without shrinking and rerendering the maps....and going back to 1.3 style physics actually - it would feel way too fast otherwise -.
Raildamage is fine, there's way enough railwhoring nowadays already, bumping it back to 100 would just make most people play like it's instagib 24/7

gtr mod change q4 viewheight to q3 viewheight and they didnt changed all maps... viewheight actually doesnt change much, its just like go-kart. Only thing is rockets will be slightly harder to aim at mid-long range

A while back I added a cg_placebo cvar in the q4max the latest codebase which allows you to lower the view height.

IMO there isn't any significant difference (unless you also move the height rockets come from when shooting, in which case it will screw up everyones rocket jumps etc), but saying it makes it more Q3 like makes people like it more.

The only problem with the game is that crouchslide is overpowered (thus making rockets overpowered as well) because you're silent, moving faster, and you have smaller hitbox. If the footstep sound, or some special crouchslide sound was added, it would be, imo, the perfect quake game. But I think even if this was done, people won't play it and switch from other games, cos its not supported by tournaments or the community that doesn't want to learn it.

Even though I like 1.3 more for a lot of reasons, I agree that most of it is personal preference. However, I don't see how anyone could deny ramp jumping in 1.4.2 is overpowered, and that's the biggest problem with 1.4.2 IMO.

Quake 4 shouldn't be on a console though. At all.

The levels, the gameplay ... none of that was ever designed to be played with a gamepad. You just need to play 10 minutes of it to see how awful it is with a 360 controller.

The net result of this, is giving a bad name to quake games for console players who have never experienced them, in exchange for a few sales.

Rocket knockback in 1.42 was way, way over the top. People began camping corners, opponent strafe slides around the corner - one rocket - bam their huge time airborne (borderline ridiculous) couple air rockets "done like dinner." I noticed dahang did it to opponents all the time. 1.3 was awesome balance btwn lg and rocket. Amazing Toxic vs Cooller battles, 1.42 far to rocket heavy. However it was all for not with the net code and 64fps - ugh. 125fps or forget it. Anyway good luck with the release.

This could be a good oppertunity for id Software/Bethesda to actually bring fast phaced FPS back from it's ditch a bit, if they do everything right. Or finally kill it for good.

1. Listen to the people who played the game actively (if they're still around) when it comes to gameplay/physics.

2. Bring out one single version of the game in all countries you want to relaunch it, so no ugly-cutted bullshit uncompatible with the worldwide release like it was done in Germany by Activision with the original Quake 4. It doesn't matter if the Game gets a USK 16 or a USK 18 rating, since most of the 16yo here in Germany are too bussy playing LoL/SCII/CoD XYZ and Quake traditionally was a game for adults.

3. Include everything that was introduced by Q4Max into the base release, so one doesn't have to download aditional stuff to get started with playing the game.

4. If possible update the graphics just a bit (make them less shiny perhaps?), but Q4 looks quite good in its original state so that is minor thing to do.

5. Going over the top, maybe this could be done. Add a Ladder-System like SCII has it to Q4. This would bump the activity a lot I think.

q4max offers all necessary options ingame. You dont need console commands or cfg editing.

just play q43a, its the closest you will ever get to q3 without idtech 3,. q43a has strafe jumping etc too, just have to use the left/right strafe keys to pick up speed and start bunny hopping, + it has UT dodge jumping and air combos and what nots, custom player speed and duel, custom huds, custom damage sets,........... and everything else

there is no knockback, and i do not care about q43a so im never going to un // 1 line of code for a patch

why re-release the shittiest game in the franchise (other than QL)? Q4 MP was a flop, and never had much of a competitive scene so unless there's some drastic improvements i dont see how this will change anything.

they should bundle it with a 1 month trial pro account for ql or something. the marketing and sales strategies of id games are as weird as their game-design choices

I mean, sometimes when I play online, the sound would get stuck on some weapons. I sometimes can not use r_useSMP "1" offline because the game crashes when I try to load a map. (this may also happen in singleplayer)

ID should add similar settings/options found in q4max and multiplayer practice bots for players that do not want to play online. For example: SABot.a11 (the bots can strafejump) or the bots in q4max, which are harder.

As an option, ID should improve the textures a bit, add some effects like the gladiator rail (in q4max) and add some frag-videos on another disk.
There are a lot of shader mods out there, that would make the game look a little bit better. See the mods released by Dafama2K7 on quake4.filefront.


The multiplayer demo released in 2007 had a major bug. You could vote the "DeadZone" gametype but there where no maps for it in the demo. So if the vote passed, then the whole server would crash. If ID thinks of releasing a new demo, then please keep this in mind.

Just wondering if they'll release the Quake IV engine under GPL like every other Quake game. Not sure how much was changed from DooM III to Quake IV, but to me Quake stands out more than DooM in terms of modding.

idtech 5 is "to complex" for modding, and quakewars is good for 10 years with small minor tweaks along the way and capable of many game types if your not a tard and dont need everything done for you

so you favor the quakewars engine, reason is performance and multiplayer netcode i guess. graphic wise the latest advanced engine was wolfenstein & brink.

i think its a good decision to release d3 source code, doom3 modding scene has the most modders.

d3 source is even more of a waste of time then quake 4, its only the games players that might use the source. no indy gamers id can or might make some money off making commercial looking games

quakewars engine is better all round, its better off packing the bots instead of normal boring Ai, the script objects can do many things if you import dll for your own map event functions

it just needs bigger megatexture terrain sizes and lipsync

the huds are better and can do more, with a tool to make a base layout

the performance is better, and can do near poly count of idtech45 with todays hardware pushing it

if id are not going to release sdk for any future games for idtech5, they should leave the modding world with a UDK type of kit using quakewars engine, gameplay already has scopes and mines and all the small things done, 3d platformers can remove with ease for just change and do games like zelda etc with 1024 textures making it all look good, when 99% of quakewars textures are 512 and look better then quake which uses 1024 on most textures

d3world talks ass, they all can spend years comparing screenshots etc, when it comes to modding they just tweak a few lines of code, like most modders do, and only 1 -> 10 actually do any public mods

q43a is another world, and proves what you can really do with a crap engine and the dll only with some imagination and recoding to code all new features in

quake 4 without q43a only has bounds on idliquid working, nothing else todo with water, it has no mp vehicles code, no 100% custom mp player models, no mp liipsynced voicetaunts, 90% of q43a code is all new to make it all playable

I don't like Quake 4 much, never did. I'm willing to give it a go again when it's released, though. I have my doubts whether it will rock at all. It's a smart move; Shootmania has people hyped for non-realistic shooters, and bethesda made the smart move of re-releasing it before Shootmania has a chance give enough to the people interested in it.

As much as I would like Quake Live to get 100% of the love, it is, after all, a pretty much finished product they have, so (re-)releasing it is probably only a few pennies worth in cost. I'm sure with a little hope that gamers actually want to thrive in non-realistic shooters such as quake, there might even be a big spark for Quake Live as well.

btw I asked J.C at quakecon about quake V but he was too keyed up about Rave to really make even the slightest comment. He said "Doom" is next and wouldn't speculate any further than that. As for quakelive all he said is it is "limping along." Quake V is not even on the books right now.

Just for the record... I'm a player who goes all the way back to Q1 release and played both Q1 and Q3 a ton. I'm already fed up with the BS that QL is. I bought Q3 in like 2000, why am I having to pay for the shit again to play it. Lol, is this the same thing that Q4 is going to do when it re-releases?......

When i bought Q4 at release... it was an absolute piece of shit out of the box.... simply unplayable. After about 1.5 - 2 years, a friend and teammate told me Q4 had become playable due to q4max etc so he convinced me to give it another shot, and SUCCESS... it was actually fucking playable.... I went on to play for a couple years. Point is, better be re-released in a playable format or it's a waste of fucking time. As opposed as I am to Web-versions of shit that I have to pay for like QL, the only way this re release will probably work is if it's set up in a similar fashion and is released in the settings it evolved to over time.

ALSO.... original CD keys should get a free year or whatever if it ends up going that route. Regardless.... annoying as shit.
