There's plenty of books and probably some vids.

You could take a quick look at Net tuts and Pluralsight, both are relatively cheap and offer video tutorials, they should have android development.

It really depends on how new you are to programming. If you're new then I would suggest a book or tutorials, but if you're familar with Java or C# then you could probably jump right in and use the developer.android website as a reference.

I'm not a fan of programming, but I learned photoshop pretty well from exploring it, but mostly from doing tutorials. It teaches you all the possibilities that can be done, and it can be pretty fun. I imagine there's the same kind of thing for programming, so I'd recommend that.

yes but photoshop has an intuitive interface u use to achieve the desired result
programing is an abstract thing u can do in a piece of paper, its harder than aplying a blur filter
i mean, i think almost everyone can learn photoshop reading tutorials, but learn to program with no real life guide, like a class, teacher or friend, its hard

It's ok, but it's quite slow and a bit repetitive in the early chapters.
Since android development is quite new, I don't think there's a "holy grail" or "must read" book out there.

In the beginning I was having too much trouble getting the android emulator to work to worry about eclipse :)

It's not great, but like any IDE once you have used it a bit used to it you get used to the niggles. It's possible to use the android sdk with NetBeans if you prefer that (but don't ask me how).

I read the android tutorial in their website, I could code some basic apps afterwards, nothing great, but tutorial contains enough information to get you started

its free, just get the SDK, there are a ton of tutorials. i don't know why you would bother with a book, unless you actually don't know what you want to do. find the tutorials/docs relevant to the particular features you want your app to have.

You will be able to start creating games in 4 weeks right away in case you have some programming skills (Java or C# mainly).

In case you would like to develop normal Android apps, the official developers web is full of working resources; theyll give you the essential points on basic and advanced programming for Android.

do u know any better IDE than eclipse? It was a big let off for me. I have programmed in many languages and environments, but I can’t recall using such piece of shit again.

the book u suggest sounds fun. I am already reading 2 others, but if I find it in pdf, I will probably read that too.

Hi there;

Well, my brother used to program with Netbeans two years ago since his computer was an old iBook G4; as Eclipse is Java based it runs slower than Netbeans which is C based. I can be an alternative to Eclipse.

You also have some block programming apps for Android like AppInventor:

This is probably a good start for everybody who hasnt deal with programming but they arent as powerfull and flexible as an IDE like Netbeans.

However Eclipse, and we have came over and over on that topic in the office, seems to be the best way to develop Android based apps. Once you are used to it its very flexible and powerfull and its autocomplete features work quite well (not as well as Visual Studio ones but its a great help).

Some tips on Eclipse developing:

- Make sure you close every .XML file before runing or debugging your app.
- In case you get weird errors you werent expecting (i.e. you know your code is right but Eclipse tells you it isnt) restart Eclipse or even the computer.
- Save, save, save, export your proyect so in case Eclipse goes crazy you can allways re-import everything.
- Sometimes Eclipse inserts "@Override" marks where they shouldnt be; just remove those who are giving you errors.
- 90% of you app crashing episodes, when being newbie with Android, will be related to AndroidManifest.xml; check it twice allways.

Depise all this Eclipse can give you some surprises from time to time and have some erratic behaviour.

Dont hesitate 'cos as far as i know its the best way to develop for Android.

The features in eclipse are descent. What I didn’t like was some buggy (or erratic as u stated) behaviour that I got. At one point, I couldn’t even read the xml’s text (it became invisible).

Make sure you close every .XML file before runing or debugging your app.

Somehow Eclipse doesnt like .xml and it might happen, while editing them (specially the layout ones), that even if you save them your layout view isnt refreseshed properly nor the .xml is displayed.

That is usually solved closing and opening your .xml back from the package inspector.

Eclipse can be a pain in the ass but once you get used to it, you develop a proper working style, almost all issues will be gone.

Basicly you can use whatever and just compile and push via scripts, ie:
