This is more on level with high school. Mandatory school ends at 16 in Sweden but almost everyone goes to "Gymnasiet" which is a bit higher studies, ages 16-19. Many people, me included, were thouroughly tired with school and the education system in general. I've worked and done other stuff up until now. I decided to take a bunch of courses, partly to learn stuff because I love to learn new things and party to get back into the groove when university starts.

Yeah that is the common usage up here too. We are not so different after all! :D

In Germany, you finish school with 18-19 if you're getting the highest education (A levels) which takes 12 years.

edit: "School" doesn't only entail the mandatory 9 years of education here.
