I think id'll die within a few years unless they get their act together, haven't made a truly good game for 12 years now and even that wasn't for everyone.

Pay 2 win seems to be the business model most MMO's are going for these days. Even Diablo 3 is taking that route.

i actually kind of enjoyed doom 3 single player, and i didn't expect anything from the multiplayer in the first place. but at this rate i'm not sure what to expect from doom 4 single or multi...and i feel like a lot of us are hoping for some miraculous mp although it's most likely a hopeless thought

They need to come up with Q5 and bring something new (game-wise) while keeping what is good from former games (q3,q4 etc).

But who would buy such a game, mostly based on MP? Most people nowadays want a game with a good story and realistic effects (see BF, MW sales), not something that allows for imagination to be used to the extreme.

The gameplay mechanics in quake ARE better than tf2. Quake/UT is a popular game type, skill would be less of a factor of deterring players if there were more people playing.

id knows what people want from Quake 3, Quake 4 (final version) and Quakelive. They just need to make new kick ass graphics (for multiplayer) and package it well. And get it on popular game services (like steam) and not charge too much for it (like $10).

I would even be inclined that they should charge $5 for it. People would buy it. And once they have bought it, people would play it.

To add, the failure of quake is not the game or the website, it's lack of exposure. I know tons of people that knew about quakelive, but didn't know where to get it, that there was a website, and that it was free.

Aside from that, the problems of the game could be present, becouse the community manager fails to assess actual needs. Needs which satisfied could actually grant resounding success. Extra players, more payments, etc.

On the other hand people can say "hey there is cp9, they're making progress afrter all". So there will be an anti-cheat, and a gtv at some point, (cuz we didn't think cp9 would come, but it DID) we just have to wait [insert your calculations, if x = 2.5, and x marks the time in years that is needed to simply add one of the most popular q3 ctf maps] a bit more. Although I won't judge how much business sense the guy has, or whos far away relative he is, which allows him to be employed and waste time and money on mapping:D

Quake 3 had a ton of exposure. It even had a whole bus that traveled the country to support the game! Quake 4 had TV ads, magazine ads, internet banner ads, etc.. They didn't just fail to keep players - they were both commercial failures.

I wasn't discussing opinion, I was discussing the facts. You said that it was a lack of exposure, and I pointed to the lack of sales for Quake 3, Quake 4, and ETQW, which all had plenty of exposure. If you have a real reason why QL would be an exception to the rule, feel free to point it out.

edit; cs and cod players etc think Quake is, and I quote, "spray and pray". I tried to teach this guy about Quake, timing armours etc (I beat him 72-0 etc) but he just went back to CS. He did give it a try though in Quakelive duels with a few other people.

I think a lot of other cs/cod/whatever players could be more into it though. The problem isn't a pure lack of exposure, but a lack of explanation of the strategy and skill that's involved. People see the game as some mysterious enigma they'll never bother with.

Not everyone is looking to play a game as a job. Competitive players in gaming are the minority, and Quake doesn't have enough competitive appeal to make up for its lack of casual/general appeal. I believe that the choice to feature duel is one of the worst things for the game.

Sure not everyone is competitive, but people are generally more likely to enjoy a game that has a competitive backbone/solid structure. People still play football/soccer and other games for fun. I agree with you about duel being a problem though. The more social team modes like CTF, TDM (and maybe even CA?) should be pushed as the "main modes" for quake imo. It makes it more accessible.

What are you quoting to suggest this? Competition will form in a community that there is demand for it, regardless of structure. Structure will only matter if there is demand first, and people will always go where the fun is. Quake has been doing it backwards - trying to supply competition, and expecting demand.

I am sad that id did not take the full potencial or oportunity of QL and put in more recources that they have, which was unfortunate turn of events due to release of Rage.

I feel the era of a single player shooter is long over in a way where it brings lots of hard cash to devs. ...id has started a platform which is viable and is in-step with time, but it is underfeed with dev time. ... ... they need to start looking at this financial platform via QL or via a new tittle that would replace ql, ql playerbase and its infrastructure.

stop blaming the market. It's id's fault that they didn't read it properly.

I know it has been said a lot but the demise of id software happened only because of bad business decisions. Back in 1999 it was one of the most important companies of the industry, but they decided to lay off key employees and to keep the company small, which resulted in releasing only 3 games in 12 years and counting.

Those are doom3 (2004), quake live (2009) and rage (2011), and we all agree those are plainly bad or at least way behind the times. Our grandchildren will be posting on this site before the release of doom4, and id will fail before making quake5.

I hope they didn't fire people in their artist team but rather those who came up with the general concept for that game (no serious multiplayer, story, tasks etc.).

A lot of people in the gaming industry get 'a job working on a title' and then go to a different employer in order to work on some different game.

id can't do anything right anymore so it's not surprising. even their tech was a fuck up in Rage so that leaves them with no strengths. I have no faith Doom 4 will turn things around as they've already been working on it way too long for healthy development to be taking place.

why did carmack take the time to make id tech 5 when no one else will use it?

Plenty of people used id tech 4, even after UDK came out, as we can see with Brink. I imagine that more people will stick with UDK, but I can envisage id software providing the source code for id tech 5 to some partner companies, similar to what they did with their other engines.
