Because it's common approach in the modern websites. Let user decide if he want load page in the current tab or open the new one. Usually you are able to use middle button to open in the new tab and left one for the current. Dunno how laptop user's are dealing with that on touch-pads with only 2 buttons, but they are lame anyway by not having even tiny mouse :P

ESR is a forum where someone stays and has a look around for a while, not a gateway site to other websites, so any external links should open on paralel and leave the user right where he was on ESR.

I don't know if it's possible via GM script, but it would be nice if the site didn't count anyone on your ignore list as a new comment. Click on a thread with like 15-20 new comments, scroll through, none visible. :(
