Hi ESRers!
I'm from the DooM2 (ZDaemon) community and I'm here to advertise our awesome league. It is known as the International Doom League. It is an organized league run by community members from the DooM2 community. It runs a 9-game regular season every winter and summer with an additional 3-4 weeks of post-season play. The port used for this game is ZDaemon, which can be found at www.zdameon.org.
The IDL was founded in 2006 by active ZDaemon members looking to run a league of their own. It's 3vs3 CTF, compiled with 12 teams in two separate conferences with each conference containing two divisions. Much like the NFL and other American professional sports leagues, the IDL is run in a regular season/post season system with seeds being determined by regular season results. And the IDL has been infamous for having fun names, mostly NFL rip-offs with a Doomish twist.
Now, with the regular season set to begin in January, we're in an active phase of getting people from all FPS communities to give it a look. Sign-ups to be accepted into the draft system take place in early November. So, we're looking for people to come and give it a try to see if they'd be willing to compete in our league.
Here's the upside: it's DooM2, so it's not the hardest thing in the world to master. While it is a much older game which strongly relies on only a few weapons, the adrenaline rush you get from experiencing a tense 3v3 match is like none-other. The speed of the game is hardly matched by any modern, less-modern and old games alike. You have to make decisions at the snap of a finger and those decisions can literally make or break your team. Sounds a bit sever, sure but I can't express enough how cool it is to be involved with this.
The community is like any other community. We have our characters, our good guys and so on. We are very accepting of anyone trying to give it a shot and if you are seriously interested, you can join #idl in Quakenet IRC (irc.quakenet.org) and ask about it.
