Just playing alot can make you a high ranker aswell, its not necessary the best player.

Assuming people would then go to the tournament, that might actually be good.

On the one hand, It would give an incentive to people to play more. On the other hand, It should not be hard for a better player to target these boosted accounts. And for spectators, some new blood wouldn't harm.

The boosted accounts can always just refuse to play the good players, though. That's one of the big problems with a system like this as opposed to some sort of official ladder, with challenges and forfeits.

Right now its not that hard to boost your rating maybe 300-400 over where it would supposedly belong.
By bottomfeeding or being one map wonders.

With time it will get harder though.

This will average out over time so eventually the amount of time you spend duelling wont necessarily dictate your Elo.

The scene knows who is top 16-32 in the world without qlranks.com. Since QuakeCon normally hosts a 16-32 players Duel tournament they will simply invite the usual suspects:


Depending on how far up top the player is listed it is more likely he will be invited and also will attend the event (in this case QCon '12).

Obviously pros should be there. Im talking about non pro dedicated players having an incentive from id to attend and play.

He got invited to two major duel tournaments left for QL and decided to drop them even he was at the event(s) playing TDM, his focus must have switched. Since he didn't participate in big tournaments for quite some time I don't see him under the Top anymore (he probably still is but no results=no Top 16). However I always liked his play-style and his attitude, really sad that he is ignoring QL Duel right now.

or invites to the open duel tourney instead of the pro tourney. They could let the winner of it take a spot against the pros. (Isn't that how they usually?)

Also, even if I'm wrong about that, I don't think a good way to do serious rankings is to base them on every single game played, including practice games. Better to have some sort of tournament, or a ladder system if you want something a bit longer-term. Otherwise everyone has to start taking every random game super-seriously -- not just in-game, but in choosing who to play in the first place.

Why not have a draw for the usual suspects vs a draw for the ql ranks top player? Winner of both brackets to meet in quakecon final?

the caliber of online players is nowhere near that of lan players... trying to mix them will not end well

just to clear up what i said, you'd have 2 draws, one draw with just the usual suspects, the other with just the top 16 qlranks players (and if any overlap, then #17, #18, etc so on).

perhaps the winner of the qlranks group would only be able to jion in the 1st round of the invited field. Either way the idea was to give duelers a reason to try (to make the top 16 on qlranks), since many of them would love a chance at quakecon as bichito proved.

More participation and a larger variety is needed to spur the interests of new players. Having the same people playing every year is getting a bit old dont' you think? Quake needs new blood....

But the same people always play because they are the best at the game. Why have people who aren't as good play just for the sake of getting new players in?

most tournaments are invite only.so that's not entirely accurate. Also, the whole point of qlranks is to give people a reason to duel which a chance to enter into a major tournament like quakecon would only amplify. And it would also help point out any cheaters at the top of the rankings list if they choose not to take part or do badly at those tournaments especially if their elo ranking is above another pro.

Eh, I see your point, but I don't think going by ELO on QLRanks is the way to get new players in the game. The way I would get new players in a game is just have open duel tournaments, like at QCon 2009. Anyone could sign up for the open tournament, and I believe in QCon 2010, the winner of the open tournament was moved up to the pro duel division. Every LAN should do this.

Sure, anyone who wants to be in an open tournament has to pay their own travel fees and hotel room, but if you really want to get the opportunity to become pro and get noticed on an international level, well maybe you have to make some sacrifices.

Not showing up at a LAN or doing poorly at one absolutely doesn't reveal hackers. I won't type out why, because I think the reasons are blatantly obvious.

not saying it would happen a lot (in regards to catching online cheater), but it could happen, but i digress, point stands, this game needs fresh faces and qlranks will hopefully encourage just that, so long as tournaments follow in step and base it on elo score, which would also cause the top players to play more on their main accounts (to ensure they keep that top elo ranking). In a sense, the number of alt accounts for the top tiers will diminish, that is so long as the rating is based in-part by number of games played (like on a blizzard ladder), so a new account can't just jump up to the top spot.

If tourney organizers want to shell out money for invites, great. I just hope they go to the right players.

It'd turn into a clusterfuck with a lot of abusing, fakenicking, dodging, noobfarming, cheating... ELO rankings with prizes attached, especially big ones just don't match. Winning a trip to the U.S. for the cost of get yourself decimated on stream for 10 minutes twice i think just would well worth for many players.

There could be single elimination online tournaments held for the top 100 of every region, that would be a different story.
