When i think back to his 'role' during Quake4, he was very good at liaising with the community but that was when he had something to say. Its quite possible that he isn't allowed to share what he does know with us.

I do think they need to tell us something! and if there is nothing, then give us the game back and let the community help develop the shit out of it much like we did in Quake 3.

I am not defending SyncError or id, i am just saying its not necessarily a case of him refusing to share information with us because he is "shit at his job" or any other reason, based on his efforts in quake 4 i can only imagine he has been asked not to.

However i agree that they should be listening to the community more and also transparency with information on the updates/features they are looking to add. At the moment all of their updates appear geared towards minor bug fixes and cvars rather than actually re-addressing the missing features which could help put this game back on track. A bit of conversing with the community who take part in leagues/cups and even mr social, or even just reading these threads might help them open their eyes.

Quake Live is done. I mean, it'll still be around, and the 10k dedicated players will still be playing. But as a game hoping for popular appeal, it's done. Even as a game hoping for just a few new players its done. All that stuff on the list? That should have been there from launch, when 2 million people were trying this game. Now though? None of that stuff will make a difference. New players aren't coming, and the ones that lasted this long will remain no matter what.

The only step id needs to think about is how to keep the game profitable after losing a large chunk of their subscription base.

The genius of it is that the quakelive team did such a shit job of advertising quake the first time we went out of beta, that many casuals don't even know we exist. If we implement the shit i said above + do a 'QuakeLive is now FREE to play, exiting the beta' only like 50 ppl would know we're lying our asses off.

Wanna know something else I've never seen in cpma - hitting an enemy who just hid behind a corner. So don't be telling me that cpma registers misses as hits. Also, those cvars - they're there so you can turn off something you don't like(unlike QL). Even OSP netcode is better than QL netcode.

I super wery extremely rarely see shots going through or hitting when they're not supposed to myself when I play QL. I've experienced it on higher pings though but I'll rather take that than the super bullshit shots I've made in CPMA where the opponent has been completely out of my vision yet taking a hit from RG or when projectile weapons have registered direct hits like the enemy's hitbox was the size of fucking Texas. There's also a shitload of prediction errors in CPMA caused by sloppy programming. If you're blinded enough to not see the flaws then maybe you're dumb enough to keep playing that crap.

The thing that people don't understand is that ID has no interest in seeing Quake Live go anywhere.

They treat it like gaming companies treat pro-gaming - they will only put as much into it as they have to, and not a penny more.

Why is this? Because there is no money to be made in pro-gaming.

They will put just enough into it to keep the masses quiet. This way they can say they are "supporting" it, and at the same time keeping everyone under the false impression that they care.

The reality is that they (ID) do not care. QL was an experimental business model which failed to turn a profit. Thus they are cutting their losses as much as they can and have no intention of diverting resources to improve it. Only maintain it as much as they have to in order to keep people appeased while continuing to collect as many subscription fees as possible.

IMHO tier system is not that bad, but simply there are not many players and no way to find skill-matched opponents. In duels, I simply cannot find people with my skill level, how you can solve this by rebalancing tiers?
With server system it's not much you can do. I join empty server, then some pro player joins and rapes me. If we restrict high tier players to join lower tier games, then no one would join at all and I would be jumping on empty map for hours until I find opponent. Any way you do, it's bad.

It is not true. When I created my account couple months ago, I was put in tier 4 right after my first game. I don't know what it does during those 20 games, but people surely don't stuck in one tier.

Sorry, as a noob I cannot agree with this at all. I played about 10 FT games on my old account and it was not fun. It was almost as annoying as TDM for newbs, you always have no weapon, you always have 30 hp, you always get killed and then have to wait until you are unfreezed, that's totally boring and annoying.

The 20 game thing you are correct on however. Id was not truthful about that. You can easily move up to tier 4 during that 20 game process. But having new players tossed into tier 3 is a bad idea. Tier 3 knows how to strafe jump/rocket jump. They decided to go with it however as the alt account slummers would rape even more in tier 2. But once again, insead of fixing the bigger picture (the multiple account holders) they ignore it.

All my ideas, if implemented would have saved quakelive a long time ago, I've been saying this shit since the inception of quakelive. And others have been coming to the exact same conclusions, with the exact same type of plans as ive laid out here. We just haven't been heard.

I honestly don't give a shit if syncerror takes each and every thing we've said to do and just presents it as his idea or whoever from id softwares developer section for quakelive outright claims it to be their ideas so they get a gold star or whatever the fuck they get for coming up with ideas.

Aside from your highly irritating style of writing a potty language, it's really hard to take you seriously because your attitude flips every forum post. No one will ever take you seriously with these qualities (or lack thereof). These are not good ways of delivering a message, let alone call for action. Clean up your act first.

Step 9. Anti-cheats..
This is a sinkhole for time, money, and expectations. I'm not saying id should not address this problem, but i've never had hope for a working anti-cheat system.

This seems like a great idea, but i have very little faith in it. Maybe something like battlenet can happen, but we've had 1001 ladders since QW and none of them proved to be helpful. Maybe if the ladder is at quakelive.com., appealing, and worry-free, and maybe mandatory, then it will work.

The only great success QL seen in this area when QL was announced on digg.com. This was of course cancelled by a queue for 100,000 people waiting for 3 hours to play a game. Nothing happened since then. I would MUCH rather see id divest resources from 50+ useless maps into SOME marketing which is right now is unsatisfactory.

This also can be PARTIALLY outsourced to community.

Step 13. Keeping the hardcores
I would rather see QL improving what it has. Not new stuff. This will keep hardcores, and keep newbs as well.

and please spawn some servers in Egypt, Turkey, Middle East, Israel, India, Korea, Mexico, Brazil,....

even if they add them, they'll just silently get rid of them when they become inactive (see singapore for the test case)

Tier 4 players should be able to join tier 1 servers (but not to play in), and vice versa. How are we supposed to help beginners if we can't join their servers?

Instead of tier 4 ukrainian/serbian/romanian servers (I can't play there), I'd rather like to see french/german/english newbs servers in my server browser.

I really like some of what I read here. I wouldn't put all steps on the same level though, the most important ones are definitely: Step 7. Maps, Step 8. Lan Servers, Step 14. Streaming, Step 15. Online tournaments, and maybe Step 3. Chat lobby. Make them 1 2 3 4 5 in caps, the rest is minor :)


I would also like to see a new step - Match scheduling:

- Possibility for teams/duel players to send PCW invites to each other and show when they are available for pracc.
- The teams' players sign up for the scheduled games directly on the website.

I have never seen this suggestion anywhere and it seems to be it could add a lot of value to quakelive.com

I've been testing CPMA with OpenArena and it works quite nicely.
The only major problem was OA texture support for all the CPMA maps.
Apart from that CPMA fixes most of OA downfalls with movement and it even fixes the RL missile so it doesn't look like a massive turd floating though the air.

OpenArena + CPMA + minor fixes + ladder system = potential profit.
Rap it all together in one package, free game.

This is the biggest bullshit, red herring argument ever. This argument needs to die forever along with any stupid idiot that believes it.

SC2 is just as challenging as Quake and is the most mainstream esport we've ever seen. There are plenty of alternatives to SC2 that should seemingly cannibalize its player base: SC, dota, lol, hon, wc3, C&C, AoE, CoH, Dawn of War, and WoW.

And yet people are making careers of playing SC2......

You know what the real reason is? Starcraft is made by a company with $3 billion revenue yearly. Quakelive is made by a company that hasn't released a relevant game since 2005. Or 1999.

SC2 is challenging but it the ladder system and big player pool makes it possible for everyone to find skill matched opponents. Fix Quake, add decent ladders, advertise to get a big influx of players and people will start getting hooked and have an addicting way to track their progress (working ladder, SC2 style).

Quake is challenging to newcomers right now because they get slummed pretty much every game by at least one player. I guarantee you much less people would play SC2 if every bronze-silver new players were facing diamond+ players for 75% of their games.

there should be beginner servers for premium / pro subsrcibers in their first 3 months and below an accuracy of lets say 20-25% over 100k shots.

This seems so reverse - in fact, in SCBW on iccup, newbs specifically try to play at korean times during a reset in order to get the chance to play against a pro.

I'd say it's more the case of avoiding korean times and being happy to find out you played a pro at the end of the season anyways.

I guess Vedic's example is true for some people but 2 days after the reset most people just can't be arsed to play koreans because you won't learn shit ( they'll just talk shit ) and if they somehow loose, they'll talk more shit in 7 lines than the whole russian q3 community could have done so in 2001.

In general (and on their main account) people will avoid korean times, but right after a reset, many people will specifically play at korean times just for a chance at seeing how badly they will get annihilated. =P

it's both a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j and k

a: Too difficult for most modern gamers
b. No advertising
c. No communication w/ community
d. No integration of website w/3rd party software
e. No lan: (eg. no way to organize games at your local comic shop, the way quake got popular in the first place)
f. No respect for new players,elites > noobs mentality (ESR)
g. Lack of prizemoney, ladders (see d), reasons to play ql
h. Surplus of bugs (that continue to this day with each update)
i. No effective measures taken against: (detlew, gragor, incubus, candyass, av8r, hospipachi) teamkillers/racism/slummers/stackers/alts, etc
j. No Anticheat
k. Not enough players (see a-j)

I could go on but i'm bored and tired of this game and the obvious issues with it that noone takes seriously.

Need something like QLTV, similar to HLTV SourceTV etc. Streaming is a pain.. give people the power to choose who they watch, bring up accuracy and what not

On the other hand listening to existing elites/veterans for how to lure in fresh meat might not be a very wise idea.

you want to do the most useful thing to the quake community:
1. close down ql
2. put a link on ql site to a new q3 patch, which will give all benefits of ql to q3 (not much since q3 still got so much more benefits than ql)
3. start q3 tourneys

you want to do the most useful thing to quakeLIVE:
1. no pro/premium accounts anymore = community will increase instantly!
2. hand over ql to the q3 mod teams (e.g. cpma team) = regular updates!
3. make server hosting like in any quake so we can put our self created maps instantly on the servers = new maps on a regular basis
