Hehe, I did in fact play around with a few of those, but I was speaking of pc's I lovingly saved up for and built myself when I was a student. Fucking jumpers. Who ever thought that was a good idea?

My first computer was a Spectrum clone and it came in form of a bunch of electronic parts that you had to solder together yourself (and the schematic that came with it was a little bit incorrect and you had to find and fix those mistakes). Now that's what I call "build your PC". When you finally do it and turn it on and it works, you feel something to which even your most powerful orgasm ever is like "pff, whatever".
Building IBM-PCs compared to that feels like tests for morons that they do in psychiatric clinics, like insert things into holes of proper shape, etc.

maybe they didn't have 800 Mhz, but they were named this way, to be marketable to intel pentium chips, which had higher Mhz-count but were relatively worse in computation power compared with a amd k6 chip of the same Mhz-count

K6 was so much slower than the Pentium II. Hell, even slower than a Pentium MMX clock for clock.

You can buy small ps3 size PC's now-a-days, only problems are, poorer spec, internal space, and lack of upgradeability.

Yeah ive been having the same thoughts, the main problem is the GPU. Been trying to figure out how to build a small but powerful ish pc. The new AMD CPUs (mATX) with integrated graphics are quite nice but still not powerful enough and AMD fusion (ITX) is alot better than intel+atom but still not great and only really useful for a HTPC.

You're probably CPU limited, so upgrading the GPU will probably be a waste, as will the 8gb ram unless you really use it as the SSD will make a huge diff.

i suppose you're mostly using your rig for games, therefore you should save the money and stick to 4gig ram and spend it on a better cpu cooler so you can overclock your c2d 8400 to somewhere between 3.6 and 4 ghz.
the ssd will have a huge impact i guess, it drives me nuts to use a pc with a normal hdd as a system drive since i got my ssd (vertex 1, so far from high-end nowadays) because everything is just so slooow :>

Actually no, mostly use my PC for development and graphics, I have like 30 windows open at once. A lot of slow down I experience I believe is from ram. And to be honest, ram is so cheap, why not?

Also, getting a mobo and a new CPU goes over the $200 price point I would have spent on the 3d card. If that's the case I might stick to just getting ram and an ssd. And do what you suggested and get a slick fan and overclock the cpu high.

My PC's been on 24/7 for years and was always overclocked pretty high :< I had my e8400 overclocked at 4ghz for 3 years I think (replaced it now for something more powerful but it's still working).

I have 4 overclocked processors, all working like a charm(the oldest one is 6 years old). So, if you know what you are doing overclock is safe.. tho if you did know what you do, your processor was going to be oc'ed anyway.

ps: im putting my first build ever together in a month or so. can someone give me some advice on how i can find what element among cpu/ram/gpu is the bottleneck? i have an i7 2600k. was thinking 8 gigs ddr3 ram. mostly still vacillating about the gfx card.

you need either 6 or 12 gb for tri channel to best of my knowledge.

the mobo i had in mind was a dual channel one.

the i7 2600 does not have a tri-channel memory controller

why didn't you get the K version?

The store (from where I get a good deal) was temporarily out of stock of those and I was too impatient to wait. I figured I wouldn't have bothered with the cooling for an overclock anyway, and this is good enough as it is for at least a while for what I do.

My next upgrade will just be a good laptop. Hook on a monitor+keyboard when home, use it for work/school/shit while outside. Kinda had it with the huge cases and "extra" computer.

I would of done the same, but I need 2 gfx cards/4 outputs.. Plus similar specs would of been a lot more expensive.

Aren't 2gfx cards pretty worthless unless you play singleplayer games with superhigh textures?

2 monitors + 1 TV = 3 ouputs required.

Some gfx cards do have 3 outputs but only let you use 2 at the same time, hence needing 2 gfx cards. Laptops only tend to have 1 (or 2?) outputs.

Geforce GTX560TI is a good choice for that money. If you can spend a little more for 570--->perfect.

How's the motherboard? I bought the same one just recently.

It's actually fine.. only problem is the mouse in the bios, it's inverted.. I upgraded firwmare but it didn't fix that. I'm used to using arrow keys anyhow so i'm not bothered.

I was going to buy the Asus P67 Pro3 (exactly the same but has loads of heat sinks..) but they were out of stock so went for this instead.

TBH I haven't noticed that much of a performance decrease.

I think you're better off waiting if you want a SSD tbh. Even Intel which is supposed to be the most reliable is having serious firmware issues right now.

Crucial seems to have very few issues though, maybe it's a good alternative but I don't know of too many people using one.

Yea, I'm gonna spend the bucks on a gfx card instead.

I'll get SSD later, when I start to notice a performance drops.
