I tried to compile the gimp on windows last saturday. What did you do?

I wanted to make some changes. The people said it was impossible, I didn't believe them. I gave up 14 hours later.

Gimp must die, it's an unholy mess.

(I was able to download and compile mypaint in 30min, it's going to be my pet project)

why would you compile it yourself?

I wanted to look into how it was made etc. Not only that, there is a ton of new changes that is only available to you if you download and compile the code yourself. (I.e. you download the latest repository. They don't put every change up for download.

Anyway, the first step once you download the code is actually compiling it so that you can go and make some changes and see what happens, or get the latest changes someone else has done and compile it.

I believe it is easier to do on Linux but I can't be arsed to use more than 1 OS anymore. Anyway, it turns out that due to there being a complete lack of direction and a very large amount of people working on 1 project, it requires LOTS AND LOTS of libraries which all depend on MORE libraries. So it's coded in like 8 different languages and every library has it's own way of installing. Now on Linux it's typically like "apt-get", but on windows it's like Linux used to be. Lots and lots of pain.

I got pretty close, but the last library I was having problems with, a bunch of other people had too and no one appears to have been able to solve it. So I just said fuckit.

Mypaint looks great though! very simple and cool, coded in python and c. So pretty easy to read through.

I really really hated gimp before this. After this experience I have vowed to destroy the gimp in any way I can. The world will actually be better without it.

btw compiling has nothing to do with apt-get,

make
make install

Yes I know, but you can use apt-get to get all the libraries you need in order to compile it. You CANT do that on windows. So all the dependencies you need to download and compile yourself, with configure make make install. etc. Well, unless it uses a different system like function autoconf, OR AUTOMAKE. Both of which are practically impossible to install. (On windows btw, I was using wingw)

I started skipping steps by just downloading the compiled dll's for the libraries, which was going well, until the last libraries just hasn't been made for windows, and I wasn't bothered to get all the dependencies to compile that. (Because I would have to compile all the dependencies too... and their's etc. etc.) NEVER ENDING.

hmm i dont have a lot of experience with compiling, but simple apt-get would usually not get me the version i needed or ... i dont know, it usually wasnt that easy ;)

btw is the one window mode useable already when you compile the newest built?

It should be, it was available in 2.7.2.
