Terrible commercial (their E3 doom 3 trailer was superb back in the day), but must be doing something right as I overheard some guy at the football today saying to someone did they see that game rage. and that was in UK.

Americans have bad taste in commericals, come to the UK and most of our adverts are like works of art compared to theirs.

I'll be buying for pc regardless. Not expecting much, but I know it will have some nice touches in atmosphere/graphics at the very least and I love the whole post apoc thing. Plus id still has a certain old school charm to them that so many devs have lost.

I wonder if they'll include some kind of editor, or tools etc to build levels. Would like to see how they do the whole megatexture thing and how their tech/editor/tools has improved.

Q3 sold 50,000 units in 3 days of it being released, I would hardly call that a failure.. Who knows how many units it sold after.

But yes, I will be supprised if the IdTech5 engine will be as popular as the UT3 one.

Less than 1 million since release, and it's even on steam now.

When Q3 was released, Q1 sold 500k, Q2 sold 600k, although i'd imagine those numbers have gone up since due to steam sales.

So no real source? Not trying to be annoying, but I've sincerely been looking for some place that has some actual info on Q1.

So what else would you have released instead of quake 3 to show off its engine, bearing in mind the studio had bpent the last 10 years making FPS games and were at the top level in their field? You're very good at being crital under the guise that you know of a better answer but never put it on the table almost giving you the false impression you can never be wrong about anything.

It made perfect sense given it was a franchise game which was in demand and the simplicity of game play meant it was nothing more than a few graphics and A.I. and Carmack could basically do whatever he does from a core point of view.

Even the majority of the graphics (excluding characters/textures) could be created in the editor and lit, so there was very little need for high end artistis, keeping costs down etc (important for small dev team). Hardly any scripting or any of the things that actually add years to the development time of a game.

They didn't need to release it no, but it was better they relesed it than that thing you imply should have been done but seem relucatant to define or put under the spotlight.

You don't have to release a game to sell an engine. Epic had licensed out U3 engine before UT3 even came out. The fact that it wouldn't take a big team to make Q3 doesn't change the fact that id isn't a big team total, so the resources they did have to devote to it were a major portion of their staff.

rage will still have some sales, because the brand id means something, but after the release of this game, the brand id is nothing special anymore, just another developer on the market ...

mediocre racing paired with doom3 single player = SUXX!
This Tim Willits guy should really not be in a leading game design position, doom3 was a failure (yeah, I know it was still successful commercially, but only because of the doom brand) and he also produced quake4 ... also looking at the video you easily see this guy is a career guy with no real clue on gaming, guys like this can only produce failures ... through his entire talk you feel he has no passion for the game he is the director of ...

there are people who should stick to the technical aspects of a game, e.g. that is programming or graphical design, because they have no clue on gamedesign and gameplay ... many people in the mod community are only interested in design or programming, but they are not interested in playing, and this also seems to be the case with this guy ... he is just interested in delivering a product ... man they have a john carmack engine, have billions of dollars and produce such a shit, it's unbelieveable ...

id tried the whole engine thing again with Doom 3, and nobody licensed it. They just can't compete anymore.

Human Head Studios/Splash Damage/Nerve Software/Raven all licensed the doom 3 engine and achieved on average over 80% across every game made on that engine based on gamerankings.com (which averaged dozens of reviews).

Just becaue something is not a success, its does not mean its bad.

Doom 3 was way more advanced than anything when it came out for several years, with the right support there is no reason why it could not have done more (why should id start writing crap all of a sudden when its written 4-5-6 industry engines in a row up till then(, but my point is things do not always get the support and are seen as failures.

I agree, and it's a miracle that it has any market share on the desktop at all. It is still far and away the most successful server platform.

when you install your cards drivers, the desktop is still 100% software rendered, the drivers do absolute nothing but give some random nvidia/ati specific apps a few new functions to be called in the code

The point of my post was to show that like linux, the Doom 3 engine was very capable at certain tasks and a failure at others.

Making excuses for it is and pretending it doesn't want or has tried to be bigger than it is is just hilarious. Only superceeded by your inability to take me literally and ignore the obvious principle behind the comparion of me using Linux server/mainstream argument.

Doom 3 engine was designed around the Doom 3 game, sadly the market moved over to the monotomous exterior COD/CRYSIS infinite environement thing which is not what the engine excelled at. (the design for d3 engine started in 2000, so interior based FPS was still the norm back then)

But like Linux, it had a specific talent for doing a certain type of game. IN doom 3's case it was atmospheric interor based levels. Like Linux, it had a core skill and use. The only difference is, you don't want to spare the same understanding you show to linux.

Linux might have started out with a specific use, but it has no excuse for not moving on and replacing windows.

The fact that it has not should tell you that sometimes things do not succeed when they should.

If you want to keep crying like a child and telling me "but it never wanted to be what it SOULD HAVE evolved to" then by all means carry on.

If you ignore conventional defintions of commercial success and instead focus on specitifc tasks, then its a success.

Q43A is a shit load of recoding and new features, and gameplay wise you will not know any difference from the average game play of quake 4, unless you dodge jump around, bunny hop around the map, take control of a bit more air control, and etc etc etc etc

See, this is what i was talking about. This is what we need for QL. Getting some celebrity or some shit, some top players saying they've travelled the world and made thousands of money playing it and make a living out of it (even if everything are half truths, who cares). Then people get hyped, join the game, player base grows, and prizes on tournaments can be upgraded enough that you can actually make a living out of being a top player without needing to place 1st everytime.
