When I was unemployed a few years ago, I had all day to do stuff and what did I do? Nothing but play QL and jerk off.

It seems the more time I have off, the less motivated I become. I'm gonna try my best not to let this happen again. If I do see it happen, i'll go back full time or increase my hours atleast.

Lived with a friend in a 2 bed flat for a few years which was fun, then had a complete stranger move in (pub interview) which was good you meet a completely new set of people. Have also lived in flatshares (basically ensuite rooms with shared kitchen, an 'adults' dorm which was less good) - ok if you're just looking for cheap temporary but would never stay there for more than few months.

Can't imagine sharing a room with someone other than your other half specially a stranger that'd be too weird (and the snoring!).

Go to the library to study, or anywhere that isn't home really.

Going to a place specifically to study will help you focus more, even if you lose some time due to travel; you'll have less distractions and going to a specific place sets you into a work frame of mind.

actually my place in the residence right now is one of the ugliest places around, and it's only a small room, it's not really good to take the ladies there, it's better to go to their place :-) ... my fault for taking it, in my next year which is my last year I get myself a nice appartement .... otherwise I don't really see a problem to take a girl to your parent's home ... maybe you don't appear as independent, but that is the only problem, really I don't think it is necessary for studiying, cause you can concentrate better then on your studies ...
when you are about to work it's better though to live in your own appartement , you have more time and you are financially independent .... there are people who get themselves a room in the same town where their parents live, that's just akward ... and most of my previous classmates go to a town 100 km away in bigger towns to get an appartment there, I mean if you are already getting an appartment why not move away really far, e.g. in another country ... then you will really profit ... but moving away 100 km and paying for a room there is so lol ... and then they go home on weekends to get heir clothes washed ... lol

Yeah, past year I've been working on a website and have registered a company and everything, I'm practically ready to start selling the service, but I just got some contract work so I can get some more cash before I start sales and marketing. I've pretty much spent my savings from europe on this.

I guess that 'saving up' thing is pretty important, but once you do, anyone should be able to take a stab at it, if they have the ideas. even, i think, if they are taking something away from whether they are leaving in the process

The more I've worked I've realized that I am always making money for someone else. It's like we are making £100 an hour for every hour that I work, but I only earn £10 an hour (for example).

So I wanted to get out of that... it's been interesting, but it's hard being by yourself. I'm getting good support from friends and family, I've even been given funds when I've run out. The idea is great though, and I really wanted to get back into development. So I could either pay someone money and study, or actually work on something and get real experience, and have something for it at the end of it.

I think you could probably get a much nicer place in Estonia than in the UK. I have lived in the UK and visited friends in other countries in Europe, and nearly always they had much better accommodation.

You need to start earning above an average wage to have a place to yourself, otherwise you land up sharing with a bunch of folk just so you can have some spending money. And I certainly wouldn't want to live like that. (Although I have)

I have stayed in a house with 12 other people and I was paying £510 per month (including bills). Granted this was in London, but the conditions were appalling. The last place I stayed in was much nicer, where the rent was about £530 per month, and there were just 3 of us in a flat.

Anyway, I have since moved back into my parents house (In SA) and don't see myself moving out until I can afford my own place, or have the opportunity to share with maybe 1 or 2 other people. It is also common for people to only leave home once they buy a property.

Another friend of mine was sharing a flat in berlin with 1 other person and she was also paying something like €200 or something similar. And I myself was able to rent a flat in the very centre of Prague for 2 weeks and it was only ~€420. Bear in mind that this was short term holiday accommodation.

The UK median salary is about 3 times higher than in Estonia, which is roughly 3 times higher than Bulgaria.

The differences between European countries are way larger than you think, mate.

I really doubt that. A smaller apartment in the capital (not downtown) can be had for about 200-300€ + bills (which will be as high as 200€ during winter with heating and whatnot), while the average net wage is about 650€. Food prices are a bit lower than in the UK but not by that much.

I suspect it's more to do with what people expect to have as 'some spending money' in different countries.

Well yes, it's far more expensive in the UK. I remember in Slovakia everyone kept buying me drinks, so one of the times I insisted that I paid for everyone. When the person brought me the bill it was something like 8 euro for 4 rounds between 4 people.

Going to clubs in London is a sure way to spend a lot of money. At least 10 pounds entrance and every drink will be 5 pounds or more.

The only place that i've seen more expensive was Sweden, which was just insane. It was like 8 pounds for a beer. Italy was also really expensive.

There are many reasons. Firstly, I am self employed. (I am a developer, I can live anywhere.) Secondly, you only pay tax in a country if you are there over 180 days (or close to that.) Thirdly, if you think £700 is a lot of money.... well...

I am planning on being rich enough to do it. And you can easily earn enough in SA. Educated professionals earn the same amount as what they do elsewhere. We have a lot of unemployment and a lot of unskilled labour, but everyone skilled earns good salaries.

Like I mentioned in my earlier post: this may come as a surprise to you, European countries have way, way different levels of income and cost of living.

BTW, (300+200)/650 is pretty damn close to 80%, and comparing a major metropolis and a town with a population of 400,000 isn't really fair. How much is the rent in Reading?

I am aware of the differences, I didn't expect them to be that large though, I thought Estonia was pretty well off actually, (Although I don't really know much about it.)

But I have been to Poland and Slovakia which I am assuming is similar. The standard of living was pretty good there.

Well I was specifically speaking about accommodation in the UK vs elsewhere. I am assuming that there are probably many things that are better in the UK, such as healthcare and standard services. Also I would guess that a lot of people would go to the UK to save, which you can do, you just gotta live with 12 people, never go out and work as much as possible.

Well off is a comparative term.

Immensely better off than most of Africa or Asia, a bit better off than a lot of former USSR countries, quite a bit worse than countries that have not experienced war or occupation in the last 60 years. Slovakia and Poland have pretty much the same living standard as Estonia.

But you weren't talking about accommodation in the UK, you mentioned London specifically. I have a feeling accommodation in smaller towns further away is quite a lot cheaper, much the same way Moscow is insanely expensive even by foreign standards, even though the Russia itself is poor and you can buy a house for a thousand pounds in some remote location.

To live somewhere decent in the UK you're talking about 600-800 (if you're in london you have my sympathy) a month in rent/mortgage and utilities, that's over HALF the money a LOT of people in pretty good jobs earn. And renting is pissing money away.

By the time you factor in Food, petrol, car, insurance, spending money, going out etc, most people are broke and in debt.

The alternatives are parents/council or undesired sharing.

And with the avg house costing over 200k (thanks largely to the millions of immigrants who hamper our NHS and HOUSING/EDUCATION) the country is due for meltdown, you can already see it with the students, 9000 tuition fee, for several years, many of them 30k in debt before they land a job, many of which get paid less than 30k for years on end.

My friend just gave up his job (background check type thing) to do mobile pc repair and virus removal, fairly medial tasks, but he's on course for earning 40-50k a year and he does it with hours to suit which is handy as he just had a kid.

Today I just read some developer looking for a direct 3d programmer, you know skilled job, £23,000 a year for someone pretty damn smart while my friend earns DBL that running Malwarebytes and a few fairly basis pc tasks for the general public and dictates his own hours. Tempted? Ok he's not being pushed professionally, when you're earning DBL your last job and not having to get up at 730 every morning, traffic, home late, it makes more and more sense.

It just goes to show how badly paid most jobs are and how most people become slaves to them just so they can live!

I'd do the whole PC repair thing but my area is saturated with people doing the same. Otherwise i'd make the effort to give it a go.

Its all about advertising really and once you get a customer, they tend to be yours for life assuming you did a good job for them.
And often they will recommend you to others.

If all you do is advertise through google then yes, its saturated, but if you're smart/cheeky, you could get a big part of the market depending on how and where you advertise.

There's a local news magazine thing that contains adverts for businesses, that would be the best place to advertise. Like I said, its saturated with "PC Repair" companies. Google's even worse, but I wouldn't advertise there (just probably list the company).

I did have an idea to advertise "PC Tune up" type business but I'm not sure how it would be received. People always seem to complain of a slow PC. Maybe that would be my angle, as opposed to repairing.

Expenditures if I move out=
£500 rent (that's what it cost for 1bed flat in the area i currently live)
£100? bills (gas/elec)
£100? food (no idea how much i'd spend monthly..)
+ £225 from current expenditures (-home)
Total = £925

Doesn't really leave me with much left from my salary.

yeah my flat was 450 a month and my expenditures were about the same minus the loan. it did eat alot of money but i didnt want to live with any of my mates and was nice to have my own place.

so you must look for better paid job for such expenditures. In example I am living in a shared flat and paying £360 including all bills and internet. Hell I hate it so much, but can't do anything about it at the moment. Mainly I am looking for my own place, but ads(newspaper,rightmove.co.uk and etc) which I look through are too expensive or just unsuitable for living without investing some amount into it. I keep my food limit around £100 per month. And personal expenditures doesn't exceed £150 per month. So total amount which I spend for living is about ~£600 per month. As you see I keep everything at minimum and it works for me. I save much more at this rate :) And by the way work hard, full time and invest your free time wisely so you can double your salary every year or two.

I've had such a shit fucking day that I've even have some of my staff contact me to see if I'm ok. This made me smile & has cheered me up something rotten. But my colleagues are so fucking incompetent it's unreal & I'm sick and fucking tired of taking the slack to protect them. I can barely stand the wench yet it's my nature to cover.

Try and work for yourself, the main thing that prompted me to work for myself is getting up in the morning.

I didn't work 9-5. I worked 7am-630pm cos I have to get up for work to be ready/arrive for 9 by the time I got home, then I was so fucked from the day I didn't want to do anything.

So for me the investment of working for other people = 12 hours.
I spend 8 sleeping.
So that gives me 4 hours of free semi comotosed time a day AND that's without the silent expectation of working unpaid overtime and even if I did not work overtime, like i said, I was knackered from the day.

Honestly,employment for most people is slavery. And most people are still broke after than too.

Unless you have a an excptional job or you're young and naive and just grateful to do what you always to do (that changes BTW) then working for yourself is really the only option.

you don't even need to be that skilled to do it, just pick a service that people need and you enjoy doing.

You can pick your own hours and often earn way more than you get paid in a regular job. Honstly, its only when you go self emplyed do you realise how much of a slave you are.
