PC350 is faultless. Been using it ages and it by far has the best soundquality for gaming. Wouldn't bother with anything other then a proper audio company for headphones.

btw do you or someone other reading this comment know headsets/phones alike the pc350 (i.e. pc360)? those supplied as bundles with some of asus' soundcards are especially interesting imo

Yeah about that price range. I'm really starting to love pc330 since I have a pretty small head and ears.

the akg 518 is about 50€ and - in that price range - praised among geeks, see headfi.org forums. buy a proper clip-on mic and you're fine.

edit: they can also be used without an amp, whatever you choose in the end be careful about the output impedance needed.

I'm looking for something for music, gaming is a lesser need. Will these be ok?

they don't compare to my hd600 but i didn't expect them to. lots of people i know use the 518 as their "mobile" headphones, there are funky color schemes if you're into that kind of thing.

i like their sound eventhough it's a little on the bass heavy side and they do not cancel out all of the outside sound. they're not perfect for gaming as i tend to believe that more "flat" sounding phones are probably better for that, for music they're pretty awesome for 50€ and they do not require an amp to sound well.

personally I think that those AKG compare quite well to the hd 280, although the latter are better (but also twice as expensive)

Superlux HD668b (see my other post below) are okay for that purpose too, and cheap.

neither, I have along others the Sennheiser PC350, Siberia V2 and HD555 and I prefer the latter by much. really, the PC350 are unfortunately a waste of money.

Can get them for like 35€ (without the shipping) on ebay (new, not used). Thomann.de might have some too, not sure (it isn't produced anymore, sadly)

It's cheap but it sounds billion times better than any "gaming" stuff and is actually on par with audiophile headphones several times more expensive (you can verify what I'm saying with sites such as head-fi.org).

Be warned that it is hi-fi though, it doesn't sound "fun", it sounds as it should. It is extremely detailed so you'll hear the flaws in bad recordings/low quality codecs etc.

Also, it doesn't sound perfect out of the box, especially for gaming (highs are excessive and bass is lacking), but after burning in for about 200h (I let mine run while I was off to work) it was perfect (good bass, not too much/not too little and balanced highs/mids too)

The soundstage is excellent meaning you can easily tell where the sounds are coming from in music, films and games, even without dolby headphones and other fake 5.1 bollocks.

Edit : it's probably the kind of headphones that benefit from a good soundcard (I got an Asus Xonar DS), what do you have?

lol, you have so far been the only one to tell me pc350 are a waste...

because they are without an amp, and I doubt you have money for an amplifier. they surely play louder and sound better with a amp, but the hd555 do too. I don't have an amp yet, but might get me one in the not-so-distant future.

I have a decent source (flac, asus xonar dx as sound card) and they definitely sound worse than the much cheaper and more comfortable HD555. Basses are lacking, they play really silent, they sound plastic. Definitely good for COMPETITIVE gaming (not gaming for entertainment) where you don't want to have basses, because it is very to tell from where the basses are coming from. If you don't believe that I have those two, I will be glad making a picture with them in front of this thread.

the PC350 are terrible in terms of music.

good to know. i've always wondered if sennheiser tweaked the sound for pc350/360 since they had similar/exact same drivers as the hd555 or 595.

they are really different and.. worse. eg. the hd555 are open, the pc350 are closed - that enough makes a hell of difference.

HD 280 Pro Sennheiser are below 100 euro afaik. I like them.

Gaming gear is shit, buy quality audio stuff and you'll be way better off unless you want to buy a headset for only gaming and nothing else. (Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, AKG, Audio Technica, etc)

dt990pro is the shit, if someone has more money he could get himself a pair of dt880 or akg 701. personally I like the signature of sennheiser and would love to get a pair of hd650.

dt990pro is fantastic bang for buck, really fun sound signature.

the k701 from what I hear is really hard to drive, you need a good amp to get the full potential out of them. But the HD650 costs an arm and a leg, as long as I'm dreaming, might as well dream of a BD T1 or a HD800 :]

nah, the HD800 are too expensive for me to even dream about them ; )

an amp is a must for most of these headphones as it enhances the audio experience by a lot

(I mean I have them for purposes other than gaming, but since I already have them, might as well use them for voice comms too .. But yeah, having a huge microphone on a full size stand next to you while you're playing is somewhat.. unusual.. :P )

When is something more than a standard on-board sound card needed?

I would get a xonar ds (I have the more expensive dx) despite of what headphones/speakers you're using - the sound quality gain will be quite a blast. it would be a real shame to drive eg. the akg k 518, that zealot recommended you, with an on-board sound card.

If you don't have enough money to buy both, than buying the akg k 512 and the xonar could be a better choice. or even buying some cheap shp1900 + the sound card and than upgrading to either the k 512 or 518 in the future.

When you get high impedance headphones but mostly when your onboard is bad (which isn't always the case).

Best you can do is buy a decent (eg Asus Xonar) soundcard see if you can make any difference with what you got, if you don't then you can return it if you're willing to spend the money on something else.

You can also use the optical out by using some external receiver (like a home cinema setup, a dac/amp etc) and bypass any processing your onboard may do (and therefore a soundcard would be totally pointless and not make the slightest difference).

When you buy headphones that are middle range quality or above, because they require a lot of current to drive. The general price point where you need an amp to get the most out of full size headphones is somewhere vaguely around 100€.

Get the 280pro best headset iv ever had. No mic but they are really good, toxic and loads of others used em aswell.wish I didn't give em away but i had to due to sponsors but I'd buy em again for sure

I also searching for great headphone+mic/headset setups,and alot of professionals audio guys told me to get a normal desktop mic/zalman clip-in with the AD700..that headphone is HUGELY recommended for FPS games over the internet..its accurate and the large sound stage which helps you pinpoints your enemys more easier and hear far away.
