sad problem with quake always has been the fact that ladders never worked out :/

Gamebattles.com ladders are pretty straight forward and easy to use. The issue with ladders failing though is usually with community rather than the system itself.

Lots of gamers on GB like to play COD ladders and such and care more about their win/loss ratio more than anything and will intentionally not play matches where they're scared they will affect their "jpeg" rank.

The dueling ladder for Quake Live will be a semi-organized place where both pros and non pro players can compete against one another for a ranking on a ladder, while the rank will mean nothing, it's still a place you can physically see a record and stats amongst the community. It's a way of seeing how do you stack up against other players.

From these ladders MLG will see the population and then paid-tournaments will sprout where players can pay a fee to participate in a tournament and win some cash. It's also the testing grounds for MLG to see whether there's interest in this game for live events.

MLG uses GB as a testing grounds for a lot of their games, if it's popular, and I mean huge popularity, it will get noticed by MLG and from there they will investigate whether they can support the title at their live events.

The co-founder of MLG, Sundance, wants to see Quake Live at MLG. He also wants to see the community show their support, and this is just one of the many ways they can, and the easiest way.

Once the GB ladder starts up, everyone who care about Quake Live competitively, whether you would attend an event or not, should be signing up on this ladder.

To put it more straight forward, if you duel, sign up for this ladder, there's no excuse.

I'm not sure why it would be a difficult concept to grasp. You're either a competitive dueler who wants competition and likes to play organized duels, or you're a casual dueler, you could care less about a ladder or tournaments.

I could have sworn I thought this was an e-sports website, didn't know non-competitive people come to an e-sports website.

Because its a bigger hassle than just asking someone to play and do it. Ladders have never worked in quake, especially not for duel. ;)

It's actually a general gaming website, but merely has a lot of professional gaming enthusiasts.

TTU VAPOR no one is really going to bash the concept. It's something good that everyone should enjoy. Unfortunately, a lot of people will find some way to bitch and complain about it. I only speak out of previous experiences. Before, MLG ran a CTF, CA, and Duel tournament with cash prizes, with an entrance fee. People still bitched about it, for reasons I probably still don't understand. I don't know what it is with people anymore.

I will sign up, and I will play. I hope others do this. I wished for once that people just overlooked their differences and negative opinions on things and just tried it. The help would do a lot, but a majority of users here aren't very positive of their own game. They WANT Quake to be dead for some reason, at least that's the vibe I get reading a lot of threads.

Thanks for the support! I guess scrubs will be scrubs, but for those of us who want to compete in this ladder, it will be alive only if we want it to. I plan to compete regularly everyday, at least a match or two per night.

MLG staff informed me Europeans are not allowed in paid tournaments, but are allowed to play in the ladders.

There's gambling rules MLG has to abide by in the U.S.

The problem with GB are the payout rations. Thats why the previous quake tournaments were as successful.

SC2 style divisions and matchmaking would have worked great for quakelive but id is a lazy ass mofo.

Quake doesn't work well in ladders since the userbase is pretty small and rage quits happen galore. It's not because the skill lvl is small though, its precisely the opposite. Because the skill gaps are so monstrous, we don't usually have randoms winning over the truly elite. The ladders will all look the same pretty much and be zzzzzzz.

This is why the top 5-6 of quake that win tournaments hardly ever change. And also why quake is stagnant.. :(


Being too hard for scrubs is why i like quake. Also why scrubs hate quake and play cod.

The thing is ladders not built in a game will not works for any game, not just quake.
It`s all like that: load up ladder site, schedule game with someone for weekend, couple days later reschedule it for some reasons, finally play it, try to update data on ladder site (or inform admins about game result) to find out you have forgotten password to account - aw, screw it. Too much work for casual gamer.
If ladders is built in things goes like this: launch game, play some duels, check your profile - yay, my rank increased by 2 points!! I`m so happy!

Ladders have worked in Germany across many games throughout the years, so I don't really know what you're talking about.

Also, there's things like Auto-Challenger, Instant-Challenger and IRC to look for weekly or immediate games, I hope gamebattles offers something similar.

Well, I`ve never been in Germany so I dont know what is going on in german gaming community.

TBH, would you like id to implement ladders in QL at least for duels?

Of course I would, but fact of the matter is they didn't and it seems that ladders are not, if at all, coming anytime soon.

But from my POV this ladder serves a completely different purpose, if it's successful it's all the more reason to pick up quake as a pro circuit title. And those open prize money LAN tournaments are what people around here want.

Seriously a whole season of MLG events with quake, with their high quality content would probably increase the average ESR user's cumspraying rate by at least a couple thousand percent.

So yeah even if it would probably ruin the experience of Americans in the ladder, I'd encourage everyone in Europe to join up and play some games just to show their support, that is if the ladder is open to Europeans.

This is great news IMO. But, the general consensus around here seems to be that id did a pretty bad job of promoting quakelive. So if the rumors are true and id is working with you guys, at least make them put up a newspost on quakelive's main site or even better make them put up one or two banners like they did for IEM ASAP, maybe ingame ads would even be an option!

It's up and live! Get to work people! This is an endurance ladder, so at the end of the month, there will be a tournament of the top ranked players.

No waiting time for matches either, sign up, and start playing matches!

Post it on official QL forums, it might get more attention than here.

I did, I've posted at lots of places, SK-gaming, Fnatic, etc.

also, have patience, the rules, settings, etc., are all being worked on right now, so not everything will be 100% fluid, but the create a match is there, and there's two options: standard and premium, so not to alienate players who are not premiums.
