Seconded. The daily announcements were, well daily in the first place, which is great, but also exceptionally well organized, containing all the relevant info.

I guess a similar statement applies to ESL. Games were largely on schedule, no DDOS or similar shit, and I guess it's safe to say that the event went down really smoothly so far, from the viewer perspective. Regarding schedule, lining games up as to not having to miss any was a pleasant experience, too.

Also, the roundabout coverage is getting better each time around. Wish we could benefit more from the russian efforts though, which appear to be fresh and high quality.

It's really a gigantic decision for a player to make - whether to drink caffeine or not. most, I think, settle on the idea that while it makes you quicker to react and more alert, it can make your aim tremble and decisionmaking rash, and so stay with water instead -- unless, ofc, they by some unfortunate circumstance are desperate for alertness.

Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, causing your pituitary gland to release adrenaline because it thinks you're getting tired.

If you're in a competition you're probably going to be releasing enough adrenaline anyway, so having caffeine probably won't help, but I guess, whatever.

The thing is that rapha puts more pressure, with the history behind them and his famous +back. Made cooller play bad. Either this or just cooller wasn't in his day.

I blame it to ql. In q3 if22 had absolutely no chance of becoming champion.

I wouldn't blame it on any of the players. That passive style just obviously seems to be the most successfull in QLs balancing right now.
And this imho is very, very sad. Since QL is getting more and more camping style on the highest level. If even esreality userbase is denominating QL matches of IEM5 as boring to watch, I don't really like to imagine what the casual user, watching the stream might think.
This is definitely not helping in expanding the fanbase of QL...

cooller was incredibly stupid during this final honestly. Every time he made a comeback, it was by being aggressive, and then, when it was a tie again and he had full map control, he just switched to an extremely passive play, whereas rapha ALWAYS fucks him up when he does that...

agree, dism rocket down 2 cooller after he tied up. seems like rapha knows just when to hit, after +backing a shit load. that can only be called cleverness. also, cooller seemed anxious, kinda shaky, dunno. maybe it wasn't him having a bad day or smth, just rapha making him be like that, through his play. overall, rapha seemed smarter, picked better the situations, knew when to attack, do damage, where to do it, cooller eating a lot of rockets and prediction damage. and i doubt it was cuz he was behind most of the time. i'm sure cooller wouldn't have done as well as rapha if he were leading most of the time.
just outplayed...

I like how rapha 3:0's cooller and some of you say Rapha is lucky or that all he did was +back. He +backed, yeah, but that's not what won his all 3 maps. It was like 2gd said: those key battles they RAPHA instigated and won that led to the 3:0. On t7 the fight at the RA and on dismem the fight at RA. Cooller just wasn't ready for rapha in those fights and lost them and lost the match. He +backed yeah, but he didn't +back any more than anyone else would have if they were in the lead in the finals match.

I agree, +forwarding needs to be more viable.

First step is to modify the map pool. Hektik rewards agression, t4, aero, t9, also reward agression. I hear battleforged is +forward as well. Eliminate dm13 and dismemberment and consider ztn and then t7 for removal as well.

Weapon balance changes should only be considered after the map pool is evaluated.

That's true. True is also that cooller could have done a lot better. He mentally "choked" if you will, resulting in poor prediction, hasty moves and decisions, and limited creativity.

czm was right though. Cooller started strong into this tournament but became increasingly passive. Specifically avek and strenx, if they had pushed a little more onto a weak cooller, they could have won just as well.

Except whenever he was commentating in a game where one of the americans were playing, he he was always commentating out of their point of view. Like dahang etc, "dahang needs to do this", "oh too bad he was unlucky there", not to forget the "YEAAHHH!!" when rapha scored a frag in the finals :).

CZM is obviously a brilliant player, but i would preferre a more objective commentator, such as when he commented on games when an american wasnt playing.

true he was not as objective in matches, but i'm sure the "yea" for rapha was out of response from cooller getting all the huge cheers from the audience for the last min frags he was getting possibly affecting rapha psychologically, especially when some of them were 'bad beats' or maybe unlucky, and was dangerously tilting the game towards coollers favor in the closing moments before OT. It seriously doesnt take that much of an "objective" mind to see that.

It also doesnt take that much of an objective mind either to see that he wasn't actually rooting for americans, but for certain players. he was rooting for in-game underdogs often, and certain american players over other americans, and likewise with euros. It shouldn't be a secret that czm has a rivalry with cooller either, it was obviously a factor in his 3-0 prediction for the finals, and he prolly prefers someone else winning (especially a likely teammate). Not all of these guys are 'close friends'.

I don't think you need to be czm to predict this final result. It was painfully obvious that rapha was going to win this 3-0. Damn it cooller :( Rapha's game has everyone driven demented.

Like on T4, in the old days you maybe fired 2 or 3 rockets blocking the door to YA before the guy would jump out or you went for it yourself. This game was cooller firing 10 rockets at the door without moving an inch. Once that mindset was rooted in cooller, now rapha simply hops out when he wants the YA and chooses when to be aggressive and every time it seems to be a surprise.

Cooller should have gotten in his face man.

I am disappoint.

Not really... it was close when cooller was behind because he dared to attack then. Every time it was a tie, rapha was ahead strategically speaking, and cooller had no opportunity to settle it by being that passive.

I saw the 3/0 coming from miles away honestly, and i'm a cooller fan too. Was either that or 3/1.

The comebacks were miracles, and even with these miracles, rapha was never threatened when game was tied.

So this final really wasn't close in my opinion. It's low scores but one player was clearly ahead the whole time.

rapha pulled off miracles out of control in terms of escapes and having to guess/intuitively know exactly where and when Cooller would push/pressure him. If he puts one foot wrong in one of those escapes everything could be different, including the champion.

Rapha will still find a way to win no matter the mappool.
However, I think replacing dismem and dm13 with BF and T9 would be a better choice.

BF wasn't given enough of a chance and the updates to it came too late. Having T9 would add another non-rail and small map that suits both passive and aggressive players.

Let people get like machines, is that what you like? BW had so aweful user interface, so that superior mechanics were far more important than thinking about strategy.
I'm glad they fixed that with sc2.

On top of that, we will see what the pros are able to make out of their APM (3 attacks at once, etc...) and that certainly will be entertaining as hell.

I don't consider the European finals on par with something like Quakecon or the IEM global finals. Felt like more of a regional final to me given that none of the Americans were there. But, that's just my opinion so it should be taken with a grain of salt.

I personally don't care from where players come from. I judge the importance of an event by the quality and quantity of the players participating.

To me, North America means Rapha and Dahang, two excellent players who are always welcome to increase the prestige of tournaments. Still, even without them, EU finals had at least 8 players which are top notch. Not considering that a major tournament makes no sense to me.

On the same line, Stermy is also a top contender (about the level of Dahang), and while I wished he could be there and entertain us, I don't think missing him made these finals less important in anybody's eyes.

Considering stermy would have taken voos spot and probably passed groupstage , he could have potentially met rapha instead of dahang and potentially beat him. So saying that isn't entirely accurate.

totally agree. on t7 for instance, cooller behind 3 frags, he steps up his game and rail, gets back and ties, then gets control, then he just craps himself and goes +back, letting rapha into overtime. and there were at least 3 situations after 2-2 where cooller had rapha really down, railable, and he just backed. pff. bad game by cooller

I have to agree the final wasn't that great at all. Not because Rapha won 3-0 but the way they played. But then again. This is where QuakeLive has come to. It is like the Champions League final. Always boring because there is too much on the stake.

How can we change this? Will more money mean less frags? Players taking less risks because of the huge prize that is waiting for them? We cannot compare the the Q3-period with QL-period. Lots of things have changed. Players have become much better. You will get punished if you try and rush like k1lssen.

And cooller wasn't scared of Rapha. He played really great. If he had won T7 the score on dismem would be different too. There is so much pressure on these guys. Playing on a stage infront of thousand people (+ camera's on them). Losing T7 in that manner is not losing a map...you lose also confidence.

It's only one tournament and I hope they won't play the same way for future tournaments. People are so quick to throw quake live under the bus forgetting all the other great tournaments with great finals.

Wait until after this year's quakecon and dreamhack before saying it's now all plus back.

Was at work so unable to watch this live, and after reading all these comments and looking at the results i have no interest in watching the vods either.

If people keep playing so boring, n streams keep using picmip configs then anybody that is not a quake player that may stumble upon the stream is going to discard quakelive as boring and dated.

the lvl vod with 2gd+nvc was a great watch, and all bar one map was very, very close anyways. Rapha was the smallest of margins better tactically, and thats what made it. Perfect casting as well. Would still recommend watching imo :)

It was a good guess, but I'm sure plenty of others would have come to the same conclusion. rapha is like cooller, but better in his decision making. Both players play consistently so the chance of variation is low. Predicting 3-0 rapha would be a logical bet from those factors.
