The "2ms" or "6ms" don't mean much. Most reviews I've seen say that the IPS / PVA panels advertised at 6/8ms can be just as responsive as 2ms TN. Input lag also seems to be pretty similar to what you get on TN panels (that is, it varies a lot from monitor to monitor)

I never had the chance to check it out myself though, but I'm thinking of trying an IPS panel soonish (TN is just too bad for films/photographs).

Been looking at the Dell 2209WA (but no 1080p :( ) and the LG Flatron IPS226V (but people are reporting a terrible backlight bleed) for the most part.
Those two are said to behave like 2ms TN panels in game (the Dell does 75hz at his native 1680x1050 res btw, other panels are just regular 60hz)

(I know it's not the best site, especially for input lag tests, but most of the monitors they review at 5 stars are not TN panels so it's a good start)

The Samsung F2380M seems like the best option for me so far, though it's quoted at 6 and 8ms GtG.

Looks like a good monitor but apparently it's not very responsive (on this site they say it's like 5ms TN panels, so kind of blurry).
Are you going to play games a lot though? And if you do, is it games like Quake/UT or slower games?

Nah, I used to but I hardly play any more, I just want this to be good enough for casual play without being annoying if I do. So now I'm a non-gamer who used to be obsessed with 120 Hz. =)

Yeah I see, the one you were looking at is definitely a good bet then, just keep in mind that a few people had weird issues with it though(like reverse ghosting etc) so pray that you get a good one :P

The best IPS for gaming is the Dell 2209WA but sadly it's not 1080p :(

I am very picky when it comes to hardware and I can highly recommend the Dell U2311H. The image quality is superb and has no (noticable?) input lag - which is a very common problem with these kind of monitors. Especially the price/quality ratio is unmatched, I was amased when I saw the build quality (costs 220 euros around here). I choose it for my brother, who is a graphics designer but also likes to play games. I recommend it to everyone, unless you are a very serious (pro?) gamer - the pixel response isnt the fastest, compared to my 120Hz Samsung 2233rz it shows some slight motion blur. But you'll have that with any IPS/PVA/MVA monitor. It not annoying to my brother and he is pretty picky too, was a pro gamer, now casual.

Yup, it's a great one too, along with the U2211H (if you want a smaller dot pitch).

It should be noted that U2211H/U2311H are both 6bit panels. I still use their previous model 2007WFP(S-IPS) which is true 8bit.

I just ordered a LG IPS226 online, will let you know what it's worth in Quake etc if you're still interested. (it's pretty cheap)

Kaleena whats the LG IPS226 like? any good? how does it handle quake?

It's not bad for the price but it's not perfect either, so here we go :

-The colours, contrasts etc are good as you would expect from an IPS (and uniformity is excellent, nothing like a TN panel).
-Gradients are smooth so it must be a true 8bit panel (or very very good dithering), therefore it's a solid monitor for photoshop and things like that. Films and games look great too obviously.

-Viewing angles are good too but the blacks tend to look purple fairly quickly when you're not in front of it (other colours have great viewing angles though)


However it has really noticeable clouding, and everyone who bought it has the issue (so don't expect to get lucky and find one without it).

Any other colour (may it be gray, white, dark blue etc) will look just as good as it does everywhere else on the panel. As I said though, it only affects the blacks, so I can live with it even though I watch loads of films. (about films : it supports a 50hz refresh rate in native res which is cool since 24fps on 60hz isn't great)

Now as far as gaming is concerned :

-Input lag seems very low, (if there's any) side by side with my older TN which was supposed to have about 0-5ms lag it looked similar, certainly not slower.

-Pixel response time on the other hand isn't wonderful as opposed to what I read on Digital Versus.
You won't see "huge" trailing but there still is a visible motion blur (can even see it with the mouse on the desktop).
However there are no artefacts or dark trails or w/e, it's blurry but it's a "clean" blur.
I think it could easily annoy some people so keep that in mind.

As for me, I absolutely don't mind playing Quake or any other game on it, it didn't make my movement or aim any worse even though I had an excellent 60/75hz TN with 0 blur before. Even in something as stupid fast as CPM it didn't change anything for me (I'm not an amazing player though)

No one has found any magical timings to make it run at 75hz so far (which doesn't mean it's impossible though, but I cba trying myself).


So I'm keeping it (but still hoping for some solid 120hz IPS/PVA to appear one day since I suspect OLEDs will take a while)
