I really don't believe that staring at a computer screen causes you to wear glasses. I've been looking at screens since I was like 9, and the last 15 years I probably spend more than 8 hours a day in front of a screen. If anything it feels like my eyesight has gotten better. Of course this could be due to me always using my monitors on high refresh, and switching to lcd for normal computer use a long time ago.

I would put it down to genetics and possibly bad lighting where ever you work.

My mum has terrible eyesight, my brother and sister both had glasses since they hit 25ish. I thought I would escape it though as I take after my Dad who had good eyesight until he had an accident at work which damaged one (thus making the other one compensate..?).

i wear contacts...ive had glasses since i was 10 or 11 years old...
when i spend a lot of time behind my monitor my vision gets blurry, because my eyes get tired..

to me it happend over night... 1 day i could read everything on the tele, the next day it was a blur :)

Don't wear glasses, though my long range vision has gotten a lot worse recently and for good long range sight I should probably get them. Doesn't affect my life that much that I would need to wear them.

From what I understand, glasses actually make your natural sight worse because the muscles that control focus get even lazier, which has been putting me off.

It is a common misperception that wearing eyeglasses makes your eyes worse, to a point where you cannot go without the glasses. There is no permanent vision change caused by wearing glasses. Your brain does lose its "blur adaptation" temporarily, which is how you compensate for seeing badly, but it comes back if you go without glasses for a while.

Then again, I have not seen anyone refute the fact that myopia and extensive near work (computer, reading) are correlated. This does not imply causal effect in the sense that not straining your eyes for distance vision (and that's what glasses do, they eliminate the need for the eye to focus farther) aggravates myopia, the possiblity does exist. There are both studies for and against glasses making myopia worse, so as long as I don't have dramatic loss in quality of life, I would rather not wear glasses.

It's remarkably easy to forget how good perfect vision is. I'd at least get up to date on that if you aren't already.

It happened the opposite to me. Didn't wear them for years and my vision got better to the point that it is now normal and I don't need any glasses.

It just means you had temporary issues, IMO, and doesn't have anything to do with wearing glasses or not.

I was blind for a week when I was like 4 and then my vision came back, without doing anything (no that there was anything we could do...). It's pretty rare but I've heard about other people who had the same thing.

I wear glasses but even with them my eyesight is still terrible (7/10 with them on, 0.5/10 without them). My natural "fov" is a bit smaller than average too (90° vs the typical 100°).

And I can't wear contact lenses (my eyes are too dry or something) plus it wouldn't make my eyesight any better (it's complicated and I can't hope to solve it with an eye surgery either)

And no, staring at a computer screen won't damage your eyes (maybe on CRTs it could a bit but there's no proof so far).
LCDs are totally harmless, even when you're really close to them (they can be annoying when they're too bright though).

When I'm tired my vision can become blurry but it's not related to computers (it happens even when I'm not behind a screen at all).

contact lenses are for vain girly types who stare at themselves in the mirror all day. Also nearly everyone will get allergic to them at some point, and in general they are just a pain in the ass. Putting them in and out, having to constantly buy new ones etc.

If you really want to fuck up your eyes get some laser treatment, you can read plenty of fun stories about that on the internet.

Just get glasses, they are no big deal really. Extremely durable, and you can put them on and off whenever you want/need. Also people have been wearing them long enough to proof that your not going to fuck up your eyes in the long run. Which is still questionable with contacts and laser.

Plus they make you look smart!

I don't know wtf you're talking about but contact lenses are extremely useful and are nowhere near a pain in the ass, not even to put on/take out (it takes no more than a few seconds once you've done it a few times). They're also way more practical than glasses if you want to have almost any kind of physical activity, as well as activities where you'd like to wear other stuff over your eyes (protection googles, ski googles, regular sunglasses...). Seems to me like you don't really know what you're talking about.

I hate putting a protection mask or any kind of helmet with my glasses, it hurts and it's just not practical at all.

For me contact lenses would be actually useful since I also enjoy doing stuff like diving or airsoft etc ... but I can't wear them so I'm left with having a slight pain on the nose and on the ears.
Back in the day when I was still diving I had to buy a special mask with glasses in it (fairly expensive if you ask me)

Also my eyesight is so bad that it's 100% impossible to do any kind of violent sport without my glasses (and I'd rather not risk breaking them either obviously...)

And "insecurity" well... some people look better with glasses and some people look better without them (I dislike the idea of changing your eye colour with lenses though)

The situation for people with very bad eyesight, like you may be different. But my (original) replies were mostly addressed to six16, and people like myself who can reasonably switch between glasses and no glasses.

For very bad eyesight, laser might a risk worth taking. But you'd have to research it very well, because there are all sorts of complications they don't tell you about either in the immediate (dry eyes, floaters) or far future (problems with cataract surgery) etc.

so what's stopping you from polishing that shit with laser? you got like 0.01% chance of ending up worse than you are anyway.

1 : I have other problems (on top of myopia & astigmatism) and because of it the few ophthalmologists I've seen believe it's not a good idea.

2 : it's not cheap (and not covered by the social insurance either).
But since you only have to do it once, it's clearly worth it though.

The point is that if you take them off you'll see less well than you would with the glasses on, unless you didn't need the glasses in the first place. Also, taking them off, and even thinking about whether or not to take them off, is still more effort than not having to think about them at all.
Second, even if you don't need to take off your glasses for the sport, it doesn't mean that lenses wouldn't be more practical. Glasses can fall, they can prevent you from using your head like you'd want to (football)... How can wearing something on your nose that can fall (or at least slide until you have to readjust it) possibly be as practical as not wearing anything?

No you can't. Again, how can it possibly be as easy as not having glasses? I've done plenty of skiing with glasses and it's a pain in the ass to have to periodically remove the ski mask to clean them/remove the steam on them, especially when you have gloves on. It can also be very uncomfortable. When you don't have the ski mask on, you have to make sure they don't fall because it's a pain in the ass to have your glasses fall in the snow.

How is that relevant? Being practical for physical activities was one of my arguments in favor of lenses. It doesn't mean one necessarily has to constantly engage in physical activities to enjoy wearing lenses.

No, the real reason I'm wearing them is because they're more practical. I don't ever think about wearing lenses during the day. With glasses, I have to re-adjust them when they're falling, I have to wipe them clean from time to time.. Life is simply easier with lenses. To address your point about physical appearance though (which you seem to be very vocal about, anything you want to tell us?), I do prefer how I look without glasses.

I've worn lenses for about ten years now, and I've had no such problem whatsoever. If you develop a problem with contact lenses, you can simply stop wearing them. I'm not saying everyone should wear lenses, I'm saying that when you can wear them they're extremely practical.

I use one pair of soft contact lenses per month (more or less). I think they cost me around ~80€ for six months. I don't have to constantly buy new ones, they come in boxes you know.

I started wearing glasses when I was six. I at first was extremely reluctant to try lenses because I didn't like the idea of having to "put my fingers in my eyes". I started wearing lenses when I was fourteen or fifteen because I decided I might as well try, and I haven't had any problem with them ever since. I don't think one realizes how much easier life is with lenses until one actually tries using them. Like I said, you just don't think about them from the moment you put them on until the moment you take them out.

i should wear them but havent since i was 10 or something...my right eye is fine but my left is pretty fucked...didnt realise until like last may when i poked myself in my right eye & was suddenly pretty much blind :x

i blame some nhs woman...had an eyelash stuck in my left eye for like a week & after giving up trying to get it out i went to her then she (not very softly) pulled it out with this big plastic thing...could have been shit before but its what i blame~

i had a terrible case of myopia and couldnt see anything without glasses. ty laser surgery.now its crystal.

but dont ever try to get it done cheap unless its some sort of promotion from a hospital / clinic that has a good name otherwise you might end having no vision at all. in short if the treatment is some pole standing over you screaming "LAZERY ATTACK" its time to run.

I could never have lazer, I watched a video of it being done and it would scare the shit out of me.

it isnt as bad as it looks... For one thing you really dont see wtf happens when they perform it on you, you just stare up into some laser and the rest is unknown, also no pain whatsoever. You just see blurry for a day or two after while your eyes adjust and then suddenly you notice they have resetted back to normal. pretty awesome.

Also, it's a 10 min operation. 10. minutes. wow.

My word of advice, you don't have to do it if your eyes are only slightly fucked. but if it advances a bit further you really should stop caring how scary it looks because the benefit for a 10 min procedure is just too huge.

edit: don't get confused about my wording of "operation". there are no painkillers, no anesthetic. you just lie down and look up in the laser and keep your eyes open.

What does slightly fucked mean? If you need glasses to drive/watch tv/do anything, you basically need them all the time no matter how bad your correction is. I only have -1.75 and -2.0 but I just booked a checkup to see if I'm eligible for surgery, cause I'm tired of wearing glasses/using contacts.

got glasses but usually I wear toric contacts cos they're awesome <3 glasses are still better for your eyes in the long run I think (oxygen n shit).

should do a lenses-free day every now and then and also not wear them too long (per day as well as beyond expiration date). mine are monthly soft lenses + cleaned with peroxide system which you can keep in for 7 days and 6 nights straight, but I still take them out every night. best contacts I ever had but rather expensive cos toric.

I wear NBA glasses for kids, and it's ok.

When i was younger and started to get myopia i was like "wtf life is so unfair, fuck, glasses are for ugly dickheadz people".

And now that i'm an adult (22 years old), i think that life is crap and it's all about money and reptilians. If you don't have money and/or if you're not a reptilian, you suffer endlessly and then you die. Sounds pretty fun tbh when you think about it.

no and no, since it happened when I was 12-14 at a fast pace, while I was reading 1-2 books daily. sight has not gotten worse since I bought my first computer and stopped reading :P

If you do not use muscles they degenerate. The eye changes focus with muscles, so there is the theory. There are some books on the topic, but I guess even the same amount that says otherwise.

Got them perscribed to me when I was in high school, they help for distance. Most of the time I can read the boards at the front of class fine, sometimes I have to squint, but I'm fine with that. I rather do that than to always wear glasses. Glasses will just make your vision worse without them over time anyways, hence why I don't wear them.

My eyesight is pretty good. I have no trouble reading charts when getting tested or whatever but since the past 2 weeks, I've been wearing glasses. I suddenly developed a case of extremely red eyes so I've been prescribed these and they've seemed to help so far.

I have to wear glasses since 2003 but not all the time because i only have a slight myopia. I never got used to them and litterally can't stand them.

I wear them when i'm on the computer because of the anti-reflection thing. My eyes are less tired that way. But I never wear them when I'm outside.

When I have them on, I don't feel myself. It's like I'm wearing a "serious guy costume"... I want to try contacts but i have very sensitive eyes and they get dry easily so I'm pretty sure it won't work.
