Winning the CL is hardly the necessary criterium for a club to be considered successful. Chelsea never won it, but they're still one of the best teams on the planet and very much one of the favourites, year in year out, and Mourinho was a big part in building that reputation, give the man some credit.

That was Abramovich's hubris rather than Mourinho's fault. Objectively speaking, his run at Chelsea was successful (six domestic titles speak for themselves). In CL, he was twice eliminated in extremely close encounters with Liverpool, and Grant reaching the finals after he took over can be easily credited to inheriting an already molded and complete team.

But you just as well rate success by the goals that are set for you.
Winning the Champions League was certainly a goal and not a 'would be nice if you could do that' goal.

He did not achieve it, so he was not successfull in achieving the goals.

Semantics, really. Abramovich had his priorities, sure, but his butthurt over not winning in a specific competition should not shroud the fact that Chelsea under Mourinho did win in others and came very close in CL. Can't win them all.... unless you're Barca '08 or Inter '09. :E

Bottom line, Chelsea was and is a successful powerhouse of a club, Mourinho was and is a great and accomplished coach.

If you ignore the last season he was there, Benitez was by all means successful @ Liverpool. In the end, his tenure was stained by poor transfer decisions, injury problems and excessive squad rotation.

Also he won FA cup and CL in the first two seasons (basically, using the houllier's team), afterwards he won nothing, with 'his' team. He is unlucky in the CL final agaisnt Milan in 2007, but in 2005 he was the lucky one, so that's equal ;)
