Schedule: Passed

The 45th ZOTAC QL Duel Cup will be played this Sunday. As usual it will consist of SE brackets using the bo1 format until the quarter finals. Then the games will be played as bo3 with the exception of the Final being played as bo5. The prize still is 100� for 1st place!

From this ZOTAC QL Cup on participants need at least Quake Live Premium memberships to participate as the mappool has been changed to the following: Aerowalk, Battleforged, Blood Run, Furious Heights, Lost World.

well like already stated, it looks just like a warsow map... it also feels too "simple" and rooms arent connected in a way that you could really surprise your opponent... Also its graphically very dull and ugly..

well if you use picmip anyway then it just might, but all in all you could stylize this map to be like 50% cooller if you would use proper textures, style and some effects of q3 engine.

t7 cos its new and good

then Battleforged

and hektitk (phrantic is bad for ql + the whole map is too bright imo)

cpma1 was a good map back in the days

i might be wrong cos i was like 10 when played cpma but it seems like everyone forgot about this map and imo its better than hektik

Yeah, q3jdm8a was very popular in the q3 community in iceland but never picked up on the "pro circuit". IIRC people thought it was too easy to control both YA's and the shards. I didn't much like cpm1a though, the charm got lost in conversion!

I think they should go completly 'new' for a few weeks, most of the top players are away this weekend and the next anyway.

Dismemberment, Battleforged, Hektik, Focal Point, Phrantic/Aerowalk.

Go back to standard map pool in like a month, or keep rotating (even better).

I don't care how you do it. If you decide to have a 7 map pool (to start of with) or just remove dm13/ztn and then add the new maps that are missing. They are VERY playable after my first sessions! Don't randomly decide what new maps to put in or not if you haven't specifically heard that one of the maps is horrible. They are not, just needs to be introduced properly to the community from the start. Your weekly cup is more important than you think to create new opportunities for a new map pool. I hope we will see all new maps at some point in this and future cups.

Might be nicer if they focused on new-new maps instead of new-old maps as well. Obviously it's nice to have old classics like ztn and aerowalk, but imo, that should be it. At least, if they had T7, battleforged and some other non 8-10 year old map like hektik, it might be nice.

I don't see much point in bringing in more new maps to QL that have been played to death in Q3 or Q4 or what have you. Let the newer players actually start on more even terms with the guys who've been playing forever :)

I think regular Cups like Zotac are perfect for experiments such as adding new maps for several reasons.
First of all you have the consistency of high level played games between the european elite which grants tense and good games. For a lot of pros it is practice but in the end you can earn 100�, so players really try to win. Ok, maybe not everyone like av3k :D.
So after a month you recognize trends whether a map is more likely suited for competitively gaming or not. I'm not saying that they should play on maps like t5. Rather add maps like Hektik and Dismemberment which already give a good impression of their possibilities as a decent duel map.
They don't have to change the complete map pool maybe something like that:
- ztn
- t7
- dismemberment
- battleforged
- dm13

and after one or two weeks add those two
- hektik
- aero
and get rid of dm13.

I wouldn't remove ztn because it is such a great map. I would miss it on big tournaments and I like to watch it. Besides strenx most of the pros like it, too, so why should we get rid of it? The main goal should be to have a map pool of 5 to 7 maps which are both fair for the players and watchable for the viewers.
ESl should have a weekly cup like they already had with t4 and try the new maps. Fuck I have so many great ideas, maybe I should charge money for them :/

battleforged is a really boring map and i dont like it at all and i feel like it should be replaced with one of the better maps like phrantic or dismemberment or hektik. i also loved t9 and thought it was one of the better ql maps. i hate t7 but i understand why some people love it. i hate dm13 and always have.

keep ztn because its fantastic and keep aerowalk because its probably my favorite map ever

t7 and t9 out, dm13 is a good brain map of wich at least 1 should stay, never seen dismemberment as a good duel map so thats not gonna happen, phrantic... maybe if the item layout works. hektik looks like a rectangle box with some walls in it, can anyone srsly play a good duel in this? havent seen battleforged yet but so far on esr it apears to be 'good' :P

edit, woops Kier, i forgot to mention aerowalk. i do agree with u that its very spectator friendly and it can potentially be a fun map IF the players are even, else itl just turn into a 50-0 fest that honestly nobody likes (well at least i dont). wich also brings me to dm13 beeing great because of the low scoring tight even games that often happen, dm13 simply cant go just yet :)

We should still keep in mind that spectator friendly maps are a plus. Aerowalk, due to its high pace, is very spectator friendly. T7 has been surprisingly good but it's love/hate with the players. Battleforged, from what I've played so far, can be very trappy and brain heavy with not too much hiding. ZTN is classic, of course. I haven't played Hektik yet so I can't say yet, but it seems to be another fast paced map. T9 is a very easy to understand map which is good for spectating, but I think that it's probably too simple to develope much more in the long term.

DM13, imo, is too slow. It leads too much to 1-0 games, and while that's ok, it shouldn't be the typical scoreline for a spectator friendly map. Just look at ZTN; you can have 1-0 scoreline games but that's not the norm, unlike DM13 these days.

Actually, all this aside, I'm just glad they took out DM6.

The only duel I've seen on battleforge is rapha/dahang from big bang and I really didn't enjoy watching that map. I've heard it called "too big", but I don't know if that's really it. Maybe I just haven't seen enough of it yet.

Took me 3-4 times to play it to realise that it's not that small :) Just give it a few more goes. I got a good feeling about that map and that is not to often it happens to me in modern times of quake!

Well for me it looked like RA is too "out of map", I mean its too far away from other items and is hardly fightable without committing, therefore almost all fights come at mega or lower ya..

The position where RA is is good, but it should be moved closer to mega and center of map by like 3-5m. I would also appreciate making it somehow easier to fight for it from lower level, now its completely impossible.

Also like dahang said bars in "windows" or whatever they are SUCK hard, they should remove atleast most of them to make some possiblities for surprises.

One thing that could be done without having to actually edit map geometry for the removal of the bars would be to move RA underneath that little walkway. It's still defensible, but if you want to sit on RA, your opponent can come in from above, and your opponent can put damage on you from the lower side from 2 directions as well.

It'd be a pretty simple item move and would certainly make fighting for RA a possibility without commiting, as you say.

How can anyone like battleforged?

Watched rapha dahang and the rest of them on it and it was the most boring thing I ever watched, the layout is so unintuitive it looks like a kid just strung a bunch of legos and made map without even designing the thing

There are like 10 floors and 10 stairs and a bunch of bar windows, but besides that there's nothing else, it's like a maze

The best maps for spectators are maps with lots of action. Flick rails/rockets/rocketjumps, these entertain newbs because of the simplicity of these actions.

For people like me, that is mid-level at duel, i can appreciate a good hub game, but I love a good brain game too. Like dm13 with cooller vs rapha or cypher. It really builds tension when you know what the other guy is trying to do, then you switch pov and see his enemy KNOWS what he is trying to do to him and is pulling a reversal.

That shit is $$$$$. Rapha is the best at that. Even on ZTN, it gets really interesting when an aim machine meets up a brain god.

Like toxjq said, you need a map with a lot of possibilities on how to play it, not just easy (dm6) control and just predictable shit.

This is why ZTN is interesting, there are loads of armors and health and corridors, so there are tons of ways to play this map.

You've actually summed up why I think dm13 is bad from a spectator perspective. There's nothing entertaining for new players, and we desperately need new players in QL. Surely we can have maps that appeal, from the spectating point of view, to both. ie. ztn, hub, battleforged (? has potential), and T7. We just need 1 more to round replace dm13 and we're golden.

All that adding more armor to a map does is restrict the players movement, because they constantly have to be at position x, to pickup armour y.

And speaking about rapha, I'm sure you think t4 is a "easy control and predictable shit" map too, with only having 2 armors and a simple layout. So why has the arguably smartest player said several times it's his favorite map? Wouldn't it be more likely he would have picked one of your "brain" maps?

You don't need to get items to have map control, you just need to do more damage than what the item gives to the enemy and trap them.

As for t4, I never mentioned it as being easy, the lay out of the map is very dangerous, you can get trapped and railed in a lot of weird positions, and since there are ONLY 2 ya's that are very close together, you need to know all angles and how to capture opponents using very nifty tricks.

It's one big fucking trap map, and you know who's the best trap player in the game right?

Yes i can agree.. dm13 is a nice map to play imo.. but its really depressing to watch. it has many cheap spam shots that are very predictable.. and the huge amount of armor and health makes good players stake very easily without taking risks.. its nice to play tho.

Ive walked around battleforged a bit and sincerely i thought the map was very badly designed and i don't see much potential in it.. but let's see i hope im wrong.

It was limited. Before it was removed, almost every match was pretty much the same since there wasn't really any other way to play it. Play was just fine tuned to within an inch of it's life that deviating from it basically meant failure.

Don't really want to see more T9. Bit bored of it. Aero is a much better replacement if you consider that it's successor, and if you don't Battleforged is 'new' and more interesting to see how players cope with it

IMHO in TDM we must have more then 5 maps. ospdm5, cpm4, dm14, dm6, dm20, ospdm6, dm7. + may be 2 good new maps. All TDM tourneys must be bo3 or bo5. And plz NO CA2 THIS TIME! :D

dm6 is a map to make duellers think they are good at tdm, since it requires no teamwork only aim.

Also because it's nearly impossible to get a decent quadrun, there are very few momentum shifts in the game. Which is boring to spectate

It can be a really interesting map. Focal point is good but just doesn't cut it for competitive play. Hub is also a must imo, intense duels and fun to watch.

hektik needs a chance as well, seems like a good one but it`s early as of yet (as for battleforged) to be decided if its any good. But should be in the mappool at least in the rotation of the maps.

Dismemberment was nice in Q3, but Im not sure will it become great duel map, those two rooms seems kinda separated a lot in spite of lg teleport, and might slow down the flow of the game imo. But I like the look of it. Anyway needs a chance too to be seen if its any good also in the rotation.

Phrantic, well probably worst of those mentioned above but maybe Im wrong. Needs to be in rotation.

aero is classic and proven to be awesome for duels before so should be in the main mappool.

Focal point seems like shit. and textures are awful. Seems worst of them all..

I think battleforged is a great map. Aerowalk is just horrible even worse then t7, which says alot.

Why don't you just stfu? Where is t7 bad? Even Cooller delivered on it yesterday and we saw a lot of close and great matches on it. You just don't like it and therefore it has to go right?
I mean I literally pissed my pants after I have watched stermy's dm13 yesterday. I never have seen any play like this on it and it was really fun to watch. I'm a dm13 hater in case you didn't know ;)

I agree dm13 is an awesome map probably my favourite tied with dm6, ztn is also very good.
Anyway to the point about shitty aerowalk and t7.
I will start with aerowalk.
-Too small and badly structured
-Can't surprise opponent(consequence of the previous one)
-Rail fest
-Requires 0 brain it is all about aim and dodging, very fast paced favours agressive style ALOT, not saying its impossible to play defensive, but very hard in this map. Where like in dm13 or dm6 1 minute its defensive next minute its aggresive. Aerowalk lacks that dynamicism(don't know if word exists =P )

T7
-An excess of "vertical" fights.
-This map favours running away ALOT due to its structure
-A rail fest also(fazz vs stermy anyone? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EB1OQkyNlkE )

Its just fact and anyone that thinks diferently is either troll or suffer from a mental illness.

I think your doing a fine job, and it's nice that the scouser (whatever his name is) has calmed down a bit and found a good level at which to cast. He is obviously good at the logistical and cast controlling side of things and that leaves you to commentate on the games in hand.

On a side note, it's also nice that 2gd has stopped (mostly) trying to be the smart arse. He actually sounds quite the pro with Joe.

Dunno why but the casting on all fronts has really stepped up a notch in recent weeks. GJ all

ye but part of that is cuz I have a bit of time to translate what I'm gonna do.... like tactically there are no big turning points which happen in a split second. But when someone dodges towards a strange side and the nmy misses a rocket... that all happens within like 120 ms.... and then even though I see it I can't come up with words fast enough to describe it...
The tactical stuff I come up with a lot just during play in between items, so usualy I have like 1 to 5 secs to make my remark before anything else important happens which can change it.

What he means is that you may simply express personal feelings where they come by. Like, when seeing a move that you instantly feel is great, just saying "wow, that's a rare move I didn't really expect here" or similar. And maybe afterwards, when there's time, explain why exactly you thought that move was great.

you seem too "shy" to me, you should express your feelings better and also try to speak with a more stronger voice. Your english could also be a bit better, as now you seem to have a bit of cooller syndrome as you cant find the right words to describe things you want. If I should imagine the guy behind that voice I would propably think that he would be "nerdy", introverted and low on self-esteem.

no chance. atm most maps going to be AIM maps. QL is not about aim.
battle forgged aim (becose you can get easy stuff and go round and round , until critical fights), aero aim, t7 need good rail.

ztn and dm13 must stay until SUPER good map for brains.

There are defined tactics to it. You aim to hold the yellow armor room, if you don't have it you push in when they drop to mega, or you push in after the quad, going for mega is a big decision, you either go for it or you give it away for free incase you'll take too much damage

You can steal red and hold rail for the entire game if you're clever about it (see juven1le play pcw's)

You need to get to quad early most of the time, but you can rocket jump up and be lucky as fuck about it, you aim to stack the yellow player

Yes you could play mindlessly, but most teams have understood the map for a long time now - but i would say it does just heavily benefit those who aim better than others, which is why i beleive it gets alot of hate. (not that you can't aim, i'm just generalising "most" of the hate).

I'd love to see how hektik is played, but actually I dislike one thing in this map very much - the mh room. It's so hard to get in there without any damage, and if you stuck there and your opponent has rockets - you will be dead for sure. There is no way to escape from there alive in this case. Which is not good imo.
BattleForged is big boring pieace of bullshit. It reminds me ca2 on the previous qcon. It doesn't FIT to the 1v1 game mode. At all.

and randomize the maps several times before every match until both players agree on the mappool -I'd like to see guard vs noctis going for that random maps cycle 100 times or never agreeing (maximum 10 tries doh)
