I'd talk to him, given the chance. I was truly suicidal not very long ago, and to be honest, even now I can understand what a perfectly reasonable response it would have been to do so.
Before anyone makes assumptions about teen angst or girl trouble or unemployment then know that, while I'll spare the details, but suffice it to say that people in the situation I was in often DO kill themselves, and often it's their best option. I doubt it's anything like Walter's circumstance.

He's with me a good bit, we've been close for a year and a half now, he's 5, he's been fully insured medical/dental/vision since he was born and I buy him clothes and play with him and we read together and have a great time. His mother and I tried living together from April of '09 til this past April and basically decided it wasn't working out, but this time it was friendly, and we get along quite well.
My son has never had to go without, even from 3-4 when he was kept from me, because throughout that time I was still taking care of him, I just didn't get to spend time directly with him, and that was what was so hard. Nice try though.

And yeah, here in Louisina, USA, if you're a man, you're pretty much just plain fucked. Your child support can be up to 90% of your income, garnished directly, if you ever fall behind you can be taken to jail, it's the only instance of that happening in a civil (read: non criminal) case, you have to be very rich, and the woman has to be an actual convicted crack whore for you to stand a chance.
When you look forward and all you see is all of the money you make going to provide for a child you don't even get to see, and if you ARE lucky enough to get to see them you're usually in some bullshit 1 bedroom apt in the ghetto 'cause that's all you can afford after the state gets done with you, it's not really that appealing. You seem to have missed the point of what it's saying. What it's saying is that empathy, the ability to put yourself in someone elses situation, is physiologically verifiable. By your wording, the only reason you'd feel bad seeing someone getting hit by a car is because you yourself would be afraid of getting hit by a car. By your logic, you wouldn't mind one bit seeing someone hit by a car if you were somehow 100% certain that it could never happen to you.

I can never be 100% certain it won't. Also, the car par is rather irrelevant. I think pretty much all people have some personal experience with pain.

I cannot say that "empathy" doesn't involve any other parts of the brain (the article makes no claim about that), but we do know that it involves the part which governs these feelings in yourself. To show that empathy is somehow impersonal you'd need someone feeling empathy towards another being in a state that person cannot understand (which I find hard to imagine myself).

Well, like i said in the discussion above this one, it's needless to go from one extreme to another, it's never as simple as caring/not caring. Our world, morality as a whole, is all shades of gray. What i was trying to say though is true, honest feelings. I mean, i don't want people to die either. I recognize my fellow humans as entities on the same level as me, with their own thoughts, ambitions, and potential to fulfill/waste away. But at the same time, i reserve true emotion for people i know that emotion will not be wasted on.

Consider, if you were suicidal and would announce your intent to take your own life publicly, you'd generate a lot of responses, much like this thread has. But wouldn't the words of people you know, and who know you, be the ones that ring true? They're the people who understand what you're going through and who know who you are. I would be glad to have random strangers wish me well too, but at the same time i'd recognize that for what it is, passing interest laced with temporary, meaningless, pity.
