I installed quakeworld and watching these demos is awesome, Milton's movement is orgasmic :O

But dm4 seems a pretty broken map :S why is it almost impossible to get out of the mega room alive? Why are the red and yellow armor in the same room?
And all maps in general seem a bit unbalanced, some of there are spawnrape fests with 30+ kill streaks (ztn) and others are total campfests that can end with very low scores.
Do quakeworld players still play only the base maps? Isn't there any mapper who can create something more balanced? I'm just curious :D

Of course its broken. dm2 and dm6 are also flawed and broken. dm6 is not as bad as 2 4 tho.

Aero and ztn are a lot better but I'd like to see them replaced by Skull, Dad2 or some other maps. Of course this will never happen. People just like to play on shit maps. This is why qw will never be a serious esports game.

No. Balanced maps are for QL kids and the current duel map pool is perfect. Dm2 is awesome tourney map and so is dm4,dm6,aero,ztn.

Disagree completely. Balanced maps mean less tension which means boring gameplay. In QW with players of comparable skill the tension is high throughout the match.

I think you're oversimplifying a complex issue. When a map is balanced in the extreme sense, one player has no reason to move into the position of the other and vice versa, because doing so would put them at a disadvantage. The game could then be considered a draw if there was such a thing in quake.

Another undesirable balance is one in which both players have no positional advantage at all and can't get one, so instead of the 0:0 score we'd get in the first example, you have completely random scores like 33 to 28 depending on spawns and inconsistencies. So in the first example we have something like "no outcome necessary", and the second: "outcome completely random".

Maps need to be unbalanced in a certain way, perhaps a 'balance' between balance and imbalance.

QW feels closer to a 'sport' than any other game, IMO. The matches are exciting, like tennis...

I actually thought that was exciting as Locktar was the clear favourite and i cheered for him. I rather see someone camping mega for 10 mins and the game ending 1-0 than a player going berzerk and the game ending 100-0 although you might get to see all the "nice moves" then.

Still it's just wrong. It can't be good if a player can stay inside a bunker for 10 minutes if he wants too. The map ain't suitable if that's possible imo.
Ofc Locktar won in the end so his camping didn't work. Sure that's true, but it still sucks to see a player hide in his little bunker.

Positive about QL duel is that a player in control needs to keep on running the map else he will give away armor and his armor will tick away. This way the player in control can't decide to go hide in a bunker.

This difference in armor system makes QL duel imo better then qw duel, but qw tdm waaaay better then QL tdm.

Honestly I never had much of a problem with players camping the mega against me. Although getting a kill when I'm on the bottom is bad because 2/6 spawns will result in the enemy player getting into the ya/ra room pretty much scott free (The ledge spawn can also result in this, although in certain circumstances I can still block and maintain control. ), staying at ra/mega is dangerous.

I'm going to these things:

1. Plan to attack in between red armor spawns

2. Plan to attack when your mega is half-75% of the way over

3. Throw grenades at different angles to make sure you aren't in the front zone

4. Jump down at an unusual angle, speed, and time

5. If I don't see you it means you are on one of the two sides (usually left) and I will splash accordingly. Of course if the first rocket doesn't hit the other one is going to the right side.

6. If you try to hang out on one of the lava posts you'll have limited mobility and simply won't be able to dodge enough rockets. I don't think anyone does this anyways.

7. I'm going to splash in a certain spot, because if you're against the wall, hugging the wall, all the way or all the way to the side on the back left/right ledge you're going to be toast. So this certain spot is a relatively small rectangular area behind the bridge and in front of the mega.

8. I don't have to kill you the first time, I can do plenty of damage and escape, maintain position and repeat the process, this time with absolute certainty that you have no remaining armor.

9. While garnering some risk, I can mix all of this up to move even more unpredictably.

So in my opinion the grand strategy here from the mega camper is to get killed in such a way that it gives them the ra/ya and a chance to get back map control.

The ra camp is a bit better, since now you have a quick exit. However it is not impenetrable, and it has no rocket ammo. If you stay next the red I'm going to shoot through the first square or put grenades in. If you go through the tele, mission accomplished. Once out you do not have an easy way to get back in.

So, you must be planning on splashing from the bottom, and staying in dynamic spots. You can fight from the bottom like this, as I'm sure you know, but when all is said and done the player on top has the advantage here. I can generate more splash, and have imo, greater mobility (although perhaps not mobility in the obvious sense), and I have an easier exit. I can commit as much or as little to the fight as I wish, whereas if I come in you have no choice but to fight.

Oh don't get started about new maps. That will never happen in qw :)

There are too few good maps out there at the moment. Even if a map seems good, most of them includes some gimmick that ruins it.

doomed is absolutely top notch, it could easily replace dm2 if people were to learn it. although dm2 isn't about map quality it's more about tradition but whatever :).

Somehow i doubt it. :P I guess the QW crowd is as conservative about it's map choices as the Q3 crowd was.

So this is the finals.. and nobody noticed that uuhh Locktar had control on dm4.. got lagged out.. milton walks around him, shoots him, takes RA, takes control and still barely wins..

Tension is pretty fkin big in these games. You should have been speccing the games live from QTV to see that.

There's all this debate about what Lock would've done to Milton if Milton had just turned and left. I think if Lock would've shot Milton in the back, we would be having the same drama fest regarding fairplay.

Tbh, I think Lock didn't call /break and restart or whatever because it's an excuse in case he lost the game. I like the idea of the autopause on someone timing out. That would've stopped Milton from going to RA to find Lock. Only issue, though, is if Lock could've stayed at at RA and not passed thru portal. Cause then Milton would've had free map control just the same.

Maybe autopause that resets player movement so on unpause both players drop with zero speed where they were standing? Though this would be a problem for players making a jump over lava or over a lower floor.
