i know, militia had alot of releases because all the "netcode" is specific to clients, listenservers, dedicatedservers, original code just has isClient and isServer where if something worked on listenservers it wouldnt on dedicatedservers, and dedicated servers run aload of extra code that is`nt used serverside slowing the whole game down and using more cpu.

militia has isClient, isListenserver, isDedicated, and all works on both, except for some of militia own stuff, idAnimatedEntity physics only work on dedicated servers for static models

most of the original bugs and glitches are in the sdk. not the engine, you cant judge militia by running on the opinion the standard q4 is shit

it might have been good. its not no more. and mods are still active with new renderers and not much else, it would be better to port the models to q4, like some have been done for d3. on moddb. inc the shambler, and just make q1 style maps

have water all sorted. its kind of lame to setup. manual mins/maxs, selected brush and rightclick func_liquid wont auto create it. so you need a lwo model. too

you can trace the bounds of the lwo model and setup a new box.clipmodel etc for func_liquid for mins/maxs and water area. but then water doesnt work. probaly need the tools.dll sdk

id doesn't add new content to the game because they're busy with Rage, Doom 4, id tech 5 itself and who knows, maybe even Q5

The QL developer team were like 10 people before, wouldn't be surprised if it's even half that now

What's to develop though? Just do a map making contest or some shit. Add some original maps. Try and get ahold of some old maps, sort out spawning system, tiny tweaks with weapons maybe (rocket launcher etc) and add some mods (freezetag etc). Sorted.

All they need to do from then on is add maps every so often. The guy that made freezetag even said he would code it for them. I think they've just kinda just decided that QuakeLive isn't a profitable revenue so they've just left it in limbo. If they made private servers or something then I can see it working out... but meh

i know i know its esr here and nobody cant wait longer in ql but everybody know this map contest and a way to integrate new and old maps WILL definitley come.

id was sold, they working on a new engine (doom3 engine wasnt a big commercial hit), searching for new programers, doing rage & doom4, and their hot to do a new games-ip.
hope they get their commercial goals, and then its time for quake live. in #quakelive it was said, they working on a new map-contribute system. quake live is fine at it is, we only need priv servers and maps.

the thing is id can get lots of free content, without needing development (contests, like the recent q3 mapping contest [which idk if the final versions are available]) or paying for it (freezetag for example).
That will make people to play more, but most probably not adding new players if there's no TC like...bid for power, or support for other games (quake wars online for example....if I knew korean) .

btw anyone knows any other case of authors giving away their content (maps, mods, etc) to id so they can use it in quake live, but id doesn't use it?.

Not that I know that much about it, but would it be that hard to bring most of the popular maps from previous incarnations of Quake to QL? I mean, if they had permission to use them in other quake games, wouldn't they have permisson for QL as well?

quake live reached its cap of signups (who don't play at all) really, except if they add TC so it's not quake anymore then it doesn't count. That's why id should focus on making those signed up players play again and also to keep regular players playing, and to do so more content is mandatory. Furthermore money is no excuse if the community offers and id seeks for free content like freezetag (mods) or maps (from q3 conversions to quake live [PLZ HUB] or new ones for example that recent q3 mapping contest).
This is ofc considering the stats from that old topic here on esr about signups (hundreds of thousands) vs regular players (possibly about 20k or less, you could search that topic).

but you have a point there. Doing ports could bring some players from quake1 and 2 (or millions from quake4). For example I don't think dm4 (qw) would work with quake live physics, but q2dm1 works flawlessly only if they use ospdm1 and no other remake or the original (then id should talk with former orangesmoothie guys to get it for free).
And actually I'd love to see a doom-themed map (1 or 2, ofc not doom3), even knowing that won't get more people playing but still. Again, use a q3 version with permission of the author like they did with ztn.

edit: the thing is id on quake live forgot what makes the quake series great: community content. Default Quake1 and 2 natively are not very good multiplayer games really, but when you add mods, engines, maps, etc etc then you have two of the best games ever. To prove this you could try running quake1 like it was played back in the day (dos, software graphics, etc.) versus how it developed in time (opengl, ctf, etc) and how it is played now (ezquake, lots of content); and/or go to quake2 with a voodoo2.
If it wasn't for community not even ctf nor rocket arena would exist, and those are the very basics now.
Considering that, id could really just ask on their forums and here for people to create free content for the game for in-game small recognition or for nothing (back in the day all did it for nothing), or to give them what they have done for quake3.

all the solutions from this post require just 2 persons: the one doing the actual job of reaching authors and managing all of above (and cmon quake live at least has someone working on it right now because there's these little updates now), and a lawyer for questions to avoid all the paranoia.

When you say TC, what are you referring to?

For example bid for power mod (dragon ball z in quake3) or other games based on the quake3 engine like wolf et. Those are not quake games really so they don't count on the objective we care about (put it like people from hl2dm wanting for more support but they get cspromod)

edit: actually I just thought of another good example of community content: cs. Most played muitlplayer fps for pc game ever.
And even more: it comes directly from a mod for quake2 (action quake2)

well i think all these posts are to make me keep playing this, hoping quake will continue to exist actively at least for some years. This is considering that quake live is really the only fast fps with a decent amount of players right now, like a last chance.

You know, I keep joking around about getting a copy of Q3, but it seems like I'm always hearing about different mods for it, maps, etc. I really missed out apparently. Having never played q3 in any of its forms, now I feel like if I got it I'd probably have a shitty attitude towards QL knowing there was is more diversity in a 10 yr old game.

Qlive hasn't done as well as they hoped imo, so they aren't bothering putting resources into it. It probably just costs them money and never really makes them money. I'm sure if syncerror read this he'd deny it, but a few months down the road when they pull the plug for qlive they'll admit it's been fail for awhile now.

Done as well as they'd hoped? Now this is just from a regular player's perspective, maybe there was more going on (I'm sure), but... It never seemed like they gave it a chance. I don't know how they got the few random billboard ads they used to have, but I can't see how they couldn't have gotten a ton of them, especially pc hardware or gaming related. Go to any 2-bit hardware site and they have ads plastered all over the place of top tier manufacturers. I can't see how they didn't have ads for video cards, sound cards, mice, keyboards, other pc hardware plastered all over the maps.

Or maybe I overestimated id's capabilities. I figured a big name in pc gaming like id software would have the legal and marketing expertise to get just about anything they wanted done done. At least from the qlive experience it seems id is nothing more than a building full of mechanics/creatives that are trying to make sense of legal issues and marketing.

I know, right. The only ads I saw were freaking K-Mart- and shoes from K-Mart at that. It just made no sense. Why didn't they go with pc equipment, gaming supplies, ffs?

The ad company that they originally signed with ended up pretty much going under.

I wonder if those ads were any indication why they went under. Maybe there was some legitimate reason why there were no pc accessories/equipment ads, but it just seems like the automatic choice for a pc game site to me (but I'm not in marketing).

Well, the company was actively looking to sell itself, even as the deal with id was signed. It's not so much the TYPE of ads at fault, but merely that the ad company didn't have a viable profit margin to keep the big brands. They did previously support in-game ads in other big title games, and even had many big brands for them, but games only live so long, and the market reach was likely unattractive.
