They use headphones to make sure they can't hear anything but what's coming out of the earbuds.

Helicopter headset for noise cancellation and
Ear buds for extra noise cancellation and better sound quality im not to sure tho i never used the helicopter headset.

They can still use the earbuds when the €700 aviation headphones aren't around. No point really in getting accustomed to those huge things.

i've noticed this too, and I'm wondering why they don't just buy 50$ rifle range earmuffs that block just as much sound as those 350$/700$ helicopter headsets.

So true man.. Had the same thought myself. decent pair of ear buds (not like quakelive actually has great sound anyway) and a set of ear defenders. I've got about 10 pairs from work sitting in a cupboard! Might be worth giving a try.

Ive wondered about the benefit of this a bit after seeing players doing it at DH. It is probably great in group stage but I my thoughts have been more about the players that dont have these hp and get to play at the stage. The semi final matches were on stage at DH with some very big screens around the players ( Irrelivant ) and also some very large speakers right next to them.. Which were controled by the shoutcasters POV.

Point being ? Well why would they want to cancel the noise ? They should quite easily hear them selves through non-noise cancelling headphones. But then they are also able to hear the rest as well.. Like at the finals where it was in an rather large auditorium and 2gd and Joe shoutcasting of course, for the stream but also the auditorium. Saying things like "X picks up RA" or "X is very weak so hes gonna wanna play tactic Y" Basicaly tactical information that everybody in the room heard. ( Including the players if they so "chose" )

Is it cheating if one player hears the stream pov and the other doesnt ? Dont know if the players in these situations are forced by admins to use a certain set of head phones or not, but it seems to me like it would be really easy to use info you wouldnt normaly have ingame. Like just hearing someone pick up an armor or something when you are certain it is not you, can be game changing.

yeah. I have a $30 pair Koss ear-buds from Walmart and the directional sound is fine. Haven't had a problem in any game

wouldnt be too worried about that, first of all quake is stereo so u dont need superawesome 5.1 overpriced headphones (and even if u did have those u cant hear the difference between an enemy above or below u cause ql is shit), secondly they might suffer a bit on bass response and very high frequencies but once againt u dont need that for quake, its more the mid ish tones u wanna hear clearly. keel footsteps anyone?
