That video is extremely retarded, because no doubt he's connecting to TS and Vent servers 5000 miles away, while the Mumble server he's probably running within the same city. I saw his comments there, but he could be lying out of his ass.

All that video proved was that there is latency on the internet, aka the internet still exists.

Regardless, Vent is fine, and is the standard at this point. TS used to be good, but in its defense, the new version of Teamspeak (TS3) has a lot of cool features, like putting certain players on specific speaker (If you have 5.1), etc.

If you actually did any tests on this yourself instead of just talking out of your ass you'd know that under identical conditions mumble ALWAYS has the least amount of lag, while vent has the best voice quality.

It was over-exaggerating something. Of course it's not 4kbps. I've heard shit quality on all platforms, I rather have GOOD quality than low latency. As many others do. Once you hit lower quality compression, it's almost annoying to listen to anyone. No one wants to see or listen to ANYTHING low quality. That goes for everyone.

So why is Mumble bad? Well, it's not about Mumble being bad, it's about making the switch for the right reasons. As it stands now, there's nothing that Mumble does that is SUPER AMAZING to most people using vent. Small gimmicky features aren't going to get people to switch. It's like Windows XP vs Windows 7. For me, there was nothing I was doing in Windows 7 that I couldn't do in XP. So I went back. There was no point in switching to something and changing when there's no positive gain.

That's exactly how it stands with Mumble now. There is no significant gain to Mumble. There's nothing Mumble has that makes people go "WOW VENT IS SHIT COMPARED TO THIS".

Mumbles quality is marginally worse than ventrillo. I've been on some total dogshit vent servers anyway, most don't even make use of the good quality it can offer.

Those mics are actually fine quality. People buy the desktop mics because when you want to find headphones with a mic attached to it, you alienate a LARGE amount of good headsets. So people get what they want and get a $7 desk mic. I have one, and from the 100+ people I've talked to on vent, I've heard zero complaints.

there is nothing wrong with the sound quality in mumble, given it's purpose. neither in ventrilo for that matter. but since the purpose is voip communication and not high quality streaming of any sort latency becomes the selling point.

Once again, a bad analogy. You're dealing with ALL internet users and a browser that comes WITH an OS. This is specific users for gaming and programs that we have to pick and decide on.

My point remains the same, Mumble doesn't offer anything MORE than Ventrilo. There's no reason to switch. There's no "HOLY SHIT AWESOME" feature that Mumble has that Vent doesn't. Hence why the majority at this point won't switch over. Everyone used TS, then everyone used Vent. Maybe Mumble is the next switch, who knows.

Mumble has been out about 1/99999999999999th the time Ventrillo and TS/2 have been out, what do you expect?

Basically, in the world of VOIP there are three major features (nothing else will make anyone switch...):

- Bandwidth
- Latency
- Quality

Mumble offers the best overall and I think you'll see people migrate over to it over the next year.

This? I expect what has been happening. Mumble just came out, you can't expect everyone to just switch over instantly. Everyone used to use TS, then Vent got better and better, so they went to Vent. Give it time and maybe Mumble will be the new standard, who knows.

Have you tried TS3 yet? How can you say Mumble is superior overall? I used Mumble for the last two years and it was my top choice for everything I've played with friends. I tried to convince everyone to try Mumble at least, before they judge the ugle GUI and the uneasy setup.

I haven't compared the bandwidth and latency yet, but the quality is slightly better with TS3. Try it for yourself on the highest quality settings and you'll be surprised how crystal clear your mates sound.

TS3 decided it wasn't allowed to save any settings and thus wouldn't work.

Also mumble 1.2 is way better sound quality wise than older versions.

i can run a mumble server on my dedicated box and have numerous people connect, with ventrilo im limited to just 8 people max unless i rent a server.

granted servers are cheap but why pay $3/5/whatever a month to run a 15/25/whatever slot server when i can run it on my own box where i already pay a fee for dedicated hosting?

ventrilo delay is horrible if you're trying to communicate times via voicecom. especially since some people prefer to do stuff like "let's rush quad in... 5... 4... 3... 2..." which becomes useless and irritating with those programs.

Teamspeak's real strength is in the management of massive servers. Unless you're running an EVE corp or something, you probably don't need/want it.

For Swedish users there is no alternative to skype. Beats every other software out there, both in quality and latencty. The other ones are pure jokes when it comes to those two choices.

Mumble 1.2 (new version) comes with a higher quality audio codec called CELT which is loads better than their old Speex crap. Give 1.2 a try.

we use GSM 44khz on our vent. its the best quality so far. seems like speex uses some compression technique to lower latency.

I tried TS3 now and it's really cool. The delay is about the same as Mumble (close to zero) whereas the quality is a little better (it sounds even more clear than it already was with Mumble). You have a better GUI, an unique ID (makes it useful for friend lists 'n stuff), addon support and more.

Only downside atm is the lack of overlay, which is one of the cool features Mumble has natively. But someone told me they're working on an overlay addon for TS3, which would make it superior to Mumble, imo.

I really love Mumble and open source projects, but the new Teamspeak is very good, even tho it's still beta.

New TS3 is impressive eventhough it's in beta and still a bit buggy. Mumble is a really cool open source project but doesn't have all the options the new TS has. Ventrilo is just outdated. I think the only reason people use vent 2.1 is because you have to pay a licence to host 3.0.

in their forum they say its the audiocard creators fault becouse the drivers are bad. thas a lot of bs! Mumble works perfectly and im happy.

Tried mumble a while ago. Didn't like it. Was a while ago so it's probably improved aswell.

So by process of elimination, it's fairly obvious I use Vent. Decent sound quality, decent pings, decent customization. No need to switch. I'm stubborn.

thats the great thing with mumble. they update it daily. you can download a new build every night if you want to. the latest stabel release that was out a couple of days ago. 1.2.2 has some tweaks done to the celt codec. so voice quality should be much better.

Ran Ventrilo on my server until recently when I moved over to Mumble. Best move I've ever made. Vent was buggy with Vista and Win7, Mumble's not. And the overlay is just great! Open source is a huge plus too, not to mention the decrease in latency.
