ZDaemon Duel League Takes Off! (55 comments)

Remember DooM 2? Wish it was still played? Well, it is! And as competitively as it always has been, the ZDaemon Duel League starts off this week pitting rivals against each on various classical maps.

ZDaemon is a competitive DooM 2 port that has been used for many tournaments in the past. The ZDDL has four different divisions, each with varying level of skills from new players to experts. Division 1 will be exciting for anyone who follows the game, with most of the top players in North America competing for a $400 prize pool!

Other divisions have some well known names across the community and also will yield some exciting matches. Many of the matches will be broadcasted live by Tastyspleen.tv with

jehar and another representative from the ZDaemon community.

So for those of you who miss that tense Super Shotgun action, be sure to follow this league for some good memories of a game everyone has heard of at one point in their life, and come join us in some fragging action and get involved in the community yourself.

ZDaemon and Skulltag actually have a surprisingly active scene. CTF/TDM/FFA are all amazingly fun.

i think it has something to do with the famous doom shareware and the modem scene in the past. its bigger in america than in europe.

doom was the first game with modern deathmatch gameplay style.

No crosshair is stupid - just by sticking a piece of scotch tape with crosshair drawn on it to the middle of the monitor, one can get very serious advantage (or, if everyone does that then there's no point in no crosshair rule)

You don't really need a crosshair for doom, so it's not like it's a big deal. I suppose it might help with CG slightly, but 99% of the game will be SG/RL/BFG anyway. Things like crosshair/jumps/railgun are more for Skulltag.

Purist Doom clients still don't even let you take away/reduce the red screen glow from damage.

i thought doom2 was in a 2d environment, where even if you go up stairs or fall down somewhere, you're actually still on the same height level, so lookup/down and jumping wouldn't make any sense

for the game itself its mostly meaningless ((i think)).

i asked players in the built in irc channel of zdaemon. jumping is "newschool". so it depends on the server settings.
some maps shouldnt use jumping, some should.

i think the players want to have these things like in other shooters. jumping, free crosshair, rocketjump etc.

Actually it depends on if you're playing "Oldschool" maps or "Newschool" maps. For DOOM2 MAP01, jumping (and freelook) doesn't make a whole lot of sense. For Greenwar MAP20, it's fantastic.

Also, jumping and freelook are standard in CTF, which has a serious scene of its own.

See, but CTF isn't purist doom itself, so it makes sense for the extra bells and whistles. I couldn't imagine them for duel, but do you have a link to greenwar?

We mostly play FFA for lan parties, so I only really have dwango5 and udmx.

You seem to have good taste in WAD's, so you won't be disappointed by Greenwar. It's pretty highly ranked by most of the multiplayer doom community as one of their favorites. It's a fantastic FFA wad and there are a number of maps that have seen some classic duel action too (MAP16, MAP20, MAP24).

Trivia. UDMX MAP19 started off as a ztn tribute.

coop is great, some maps have monster hordes like serious sam. its funny to shot parallel with 4 (6?) players and search for buttons to unlock the next room. a real massaker!

Skulltag has an OpenGL renderer with correct perspective when looking up and down, if it's the software renderer itself that is throwing you off.

That is just an average player on a public server a while back. Not too representative of real competitive CTF in ZDaemon. Install ZDaemon then watch some of these http://www.intldoomleague.org/demos to get a real idea of what it is like in competition. Potent = last Doom God so watch his pov demos.

Doom Duels are still as viable as any other fps - the technological differences are rather transparent to me.

First off, with so much of the balance going to map control via position and not so much with items, ssg duels get a mind game of their own. This is a particular kind of duel you won't see in any other game, which makes it stand out. Secondly, the community is just as active, and a little more contributory than I see anywhere else. Just about every member in the community can map, texture, code, mod, etc. The sheer amount of 14 years of content is staggering, and Zdaemon does an admirable job of taking the best of the new without losing the grit of the old.

I'll be proud to give this league the same kind of coverage as we have been with Quake Live and Quake II. I couldn't be happier to see this happen.

why is it USA, Canada and Mexico players only, with some exeptions.

Doom has historically always had a 35fps cap (one frame per tic), and ZDaemon is forked from an older version of ZDoom that still had this limitation in place.

Modern versions of ZDoom and Skulltag remove this limitation. Much smoother experience, but if you're used to 35fps like many of the older players are it can throw you off, and apparently cvars that cap the framerate at 35 aren't the same.

I'd like more FPS for sure but it is still great fun even at lower FPS. I admit it takes getting used to but it is not a great obstacle to overcome. Given the overall speed of Doom and the low FPS it is amazing some of the shots you can still hit.

Maybe I will connect my pad and try it again.
The psx version of the game played on linked consoles was great. You just binded strafes to L and R buttons, along with weapon next previous to second ones, and it played a lot better like that than on PC :P

I barely play and don't follow the ZDaemon scene anymore really but in Div1(which is the only div that matters of course!) it'll be a battle between Dev and JKist. Whiteboy and Hatred might have the talent to win but I doubt they'll put in anywhere near enough practice. JKist is the clear favorite having won one season before and placing second the other season. AFAIK he also put up the prize money this season so I doubt he'd do that unless he intends to win most of it back.

CTF is always freelook pretty much, and a lot of other servers are too. Duel is basically the only mode without it. One of the reasons I never got into it that much. You can play duel with freelook but pretty much no one does, and all the community/servers are against it.
