SteelSeries have revealed the latest two additions to their mouse lineup, the Xai and the Kinzu. The mice which share the same shape should be released this August alongisde the SteelSeries 9HD hard plastic surface.

We spent three years methodically perfecting the SteelSeries Xai by researching mouse grips used by professional gaming teams such as Fnatic, SK Gaming and Evil Geniuses in order to create a level of performance that gamers have never experienced before

I am not sure about the Xai, it seems gimicky, but the Kinzu sounds interesting, it appears to be similar to the wmo, with just a few added features. Price ain't too bad either.

Kinzu is worse than overclocked wmo1.1a. You use a higher sens, so maybe wouldn't notice, but from their stats the Kinzu can only move 1.27 m/s.

The wmo defaults to 1 m/s, which almost everybody notices has negative accel. Overclocked it's like 1.5m/s, and works alright. So the Kinzu is borderline.

They should have just bought the mx300 sensor, then they would have been golden. Don't see why they'd release with such an obvious problem.

No idea where you got those numbers from, but ikari optical never has neg accel or any tracking issues. An oc'd wmo you can hit neg accel if you try really hard. All of kinzu's stats are better than ikari optical

The MX518 is rated by manuufacturer at 40 ips max. In reality it does muuch more.

I guess same applies to most optical mice, including kinzu

Perhaps I was unclear, I mean the actual response time (latency), not how often it updates. As in, if I move my mouse, how long will it take until it's updated on the screen?

That is, in my opinion, one of the most important stats to know as a gamer, yet it is hardly ever shown by the manufacturer.

I don't think that there is really a difference between most high end mice

only statement I have ever read about this subjekt was from MS about the X8, but it wasn't very clear written
and I know that the Lachesis has an SPI of 2ms, so no real 1000Hz ;)

I will try to get some more info about this from the SS R&D Manager

PS: Razer also want's to hide the wireless lag of the Mamba by talking about polling rate

Yes, nothing on a computer is instant. As the signal has to be processed in the mouse, then sent to the computer, which in turn has to process it and then send the information to the screen. This is unrelated to images per second, usb rate and your screen refresh rate. Some mouses have it better and some have it worse, some wireless ones almost makes it unplayable in high speed FPS games due to the latency.

However, it's difficult to know which mouse has the lowest latency as those numbers are very rarely revealed (and are difficult to test yourself).

You can do a very rough test by placing your mouse right below your cursor on the screen, as you move the mouse, you will notice that there is an ever so slight delay before the cursor moves as well.

Impossible to tell, as just with eyesight you cannot really see the difference between 0.2ms, 2ms or 20ms. The link I pasted has quite a bit of discussion about latency and Sujoy was even working on a way to test it (using a light to track both the cursor and the mouse to see the delay between them, I believe).

Well, I wouldn't be able to tell if it was 20 ms, even though effectively it would be as adding 20 to your ping. Naturally, any ms reduction you can get is of importance in FPS games.

you can tell <30 ping especially if it concerns movement. try switching on that movement lag variable in cpma and play on a 20ms server, you'll notice right away. same as you'd notice your cursor lagging if there was any mouse lag.

ok, no lag from the sensor, it's way under 1 ms

to quote a former Avago employee: "that's BS" :D

btw. SPI of the ADNS-9500 sensor runs @2MHz

MCUs are also fast enough and operate with high clocks, so you don't get some lag from them

you have some lag from the buttons, <10ms is considered a very good value

I will not post the exact value for the Xai cause without values from other mice it would't be really fair und would only lead to useless assumption and speculations ;)

2 more things about this subject:

- on the A4Tech X7 Oscar Mice "You can set mouse key responding time between 3-30ms", but 3ms are quite likely not the whole/real response time

- MS claims for the X8 that "it takes the mouse 12-14ms to process a mouse command", imho they mean the button response time (but it could also be the wireless lag)

One thing that crosses my mind seeing this is the LCD lag tests, where you put monitors (a no-lag CRT and the LCD) on DualView, run a counter and take a photo of both screens with a high-speed camera, to see the difference in time. Now, with mice you could have the same hardware and something mechanical moving those mice at the same speed, I don't see a practical way to do this, but maybe someone's crazy enough to do it.

Using a counter on screen is flawed. The correct way to do it, for monitors, is to run a high speed camera and check the number of frames between the two monitors (1000 images per second would give you the accuracy down to 1 ms.) Mice are harder to do though as you need to consider drivers, OS input lag etc. so you can't use onscreen stuff. The correct way for mice would be to use a specially made device that initializes the mouse and get the packets over USB, which it then timestamps, while at the same time controlling an arm with a set movement pattern. You would then have to analyze the packets to see how the delay between the movement and the packet transmission works.

Relying on the onscreen counter has massive imprecision for measuring monitor lag when displaying numbers on screen. With 60hz on the CRT you compare with, you get inaccuracies of up to 16.6ms for each measurement, for 120hz you get inaccuracies of up to 8.3ms. With a 1000 frames per second camera you look for the number of frames between image changes which gives up to 1ms inaccuracies, the counter is irrelevant due to the error margins.

I've never seen a mouse with an input delay on movement.
There is a delay on clicks on some mice, like the death adder, but for movement I've never seen one with an "input delay". Perhaps you're thinking of the input delay inherent in all LCD screens?

The Kinzu is imho more targeted at RTS Players and not everyone needs/likes sidebuttons.

The Xai is ambi and has 2 side buttons on every side.

Personally I'm more interested in the Xai because of the side buttons but I will give the Kinzu a try. I like it that you have absolute control of all the calculations which the mouse makes and imho the ADNS-9500 sensor on the Xai will do a great job.
The low self adjusting LOD is imho a great feature of that sensor

PS: The Xai weights about 95g without cable.

just got some Info:

Weight ist 70g, he couldn't tell me how exactly they measured it but definitely extrem light weight

No "angle snapping" (aka "correction/prediction) but the sensor still corrects obviously wrong data which is normal for every optical sensor.

No FreeMove and no ExactSens.

PS: Looks like the sensor has 50 ips but does 75 ips on some CPI levels, don't implicate too much in that by comparing it to other mice specs. ;)

Technically doesn't mean shit though, which is WHY we're all still using old mice like the WMO (IE 3.0 here, sometimes G1 for RTS). You said better.

Technologically better (which I assume is what you mean) != better all-round.

I would much sooner buy a 1.1SS/3.0SS from Steel than any of these silly 3200 DPI things.

I tried the Ikari Laser, sent it back though, was just horrible grip.
i recently dusted off my old mx518 just for nostalgic reasons and surprisingly fell in love with it instantly. I hadn't used it for about 2-3 years and I totally forgot how good it was.
Still to date I haven't found one mouse that can perform half as well as this one.

Sorry for being off topic, but I can't see how these mices can be any better than the Ikari, they look pretty much the same, thus as an option for me, it is not.

am i to assume this is gonna be yet another let down for left handed gamers?

im only seeing buttons on one side of that mouse..nothing in the description about buttons on both sides, and only one side has been photographed.

saying "ambidextrous design" doesnt mean much without saying "buttons on both sides" as well.

means about as much as saying "zero trans fats" while the product still contains "partially hydrogenated" ingredients. or "zero fat" but still contains "sugar" in any form. :)

leaving info out only means i wont buy it after i find out its not good for me. and ill tell everyone else about it aswell >_<

I've waited soo long for this... a better sensor in the WMO/IMO shape.
I'd say the Xai is best for RTS and tactical shooters, the Kinzu for fast FPS players, especially duelers.

If the new ADNS-9500 laser sensor in the Xai scores good and really has no skipping issues etc. I will go for it. Dumb my old IMO1.1
I really like two sidebuttons, great for fast acces when your "keyboard hand" is too busy. I mainly use it for weapon binds or voicecom handling.

Bring on Mousescore 2009 Sujoy !!

Damn than Xai would just be perfect if it lacked those sidebuttons (no need for it imo =)) and would be the Kinzu shape/weight.

XAI sounds awesome on paper, gonna get that since Logitech FAILS at keeping the good mice in developement. My G3 broke and they arent selling those anymore...
