Those are real challenges to overcome, not excuses. We've been working with ztn for a long time to make this happen. It would have been impossible to make it so without constant communication with sten to work out an agreement and find the best to way to bring his map into QUAKE LIVE.

It's business I know. But after this release two questions come into players head: who's next? Scancode of q3wcp9/18? Lukin of Q4 maps? aerowalk/remix authors? Now every rumor can be true.

And in wider range: maybe everything is around the corner but id just keeps it quiet for some reason? linux support, locks, referees. Why can't we see features from CPMA, they got arQon after all? Where's duel scoreboard, chat tokens, demo playback, MVD? There will always be a doubt :)

Linux support, locks, 'refs' ARE most certainly just right around the corner. We've tried to let people know that, as it has been discussed in our dev blogs. Its just difficult cause things take time and we don't want to talk too much about them too early. But we hope to deliver soon on many of the things we've brought up as project goals.

Why?

Because old maps break ranking systems and discourage existing players from playing new maps because they suck on them in comparison to the old favs.

Secondly new players see big names (or players they want to aspire to skill wise) on these maps and when they try to play and realise that their opponent has about 10 years of map knowledge on them its going to be totally uninspiring for them to play because they will progress to the point where they get anywhere near to winning a game.

It will be total domination.

How do you design a ranking system which is supposed to make an accurate assessment of a player when it has significant knowledge of map which totally screw up his stats?

If you make it map based only then players will just stick to the same old crap. It'll encourage stalemate.

Map knowledge has a significant imapact of the definable parameters that the game uses to define your level of skill.

In short, its a bit like giving an exam to students when they've had years worth of access to the exact questions before.
Do you think their performacen on that test is going to be an accurate assessment of their transferable ability?

Seriously, even if a new player has more natural skill than the other, how do you realistically beat a player that knows these maps inside out and back to front?

It would just make me feel cheated if I was new player trying to get into quakelive.

You play one map (fairly new) and have a close game, then you play the same on ZTN vs his 800 hr practice cos he played quake 3, vs your 12 hours.

Its pointless. And while the same is true of fighting games, there are new characters which will create new matchups expereinces.

These games are broke because they all have the same ability, hence, there is a so much on map knowledge.

I have played ZTN loads over the years, I| could not touch quakelive in 12 months and still come on and beat the average quakelive player who is new to ZTN.

That's just stupid and uninspiring.

Until these games have different character abilites, most of the emphasis is on map knowledge and nothing else.

All reasons that have been discussed many times and we're aware of, but ultimately get trumped by the fact that:

1.) the map is loved
2.) it is good (great layout, well built, proven over time)

In the end, you can discuss all the metagame mind theories you want, but its never bad to add a good map to the map pool.

1) You're prepared to risk alienating a new breed of players to please the existing small % who would be playing anyway.

2) You ruin the ranking/stats system by throwing in old maps which have tangent like spikes in the ranking system. Therefore its quite useless in the true sense of a ranking/stats.

3) Afte a while, any new player to quakelive will realise that the most popular duel maps (as well as some of the old favs like TDM/CTF because they will follow the top tier players) are ones which top players have significant expereince on, thereby making them realise that unless they show considerably enhanced gaming skill (which is not really possible for most), they're not ever going to get anywhere near these players, even if, they have relatively close games on the other maps. They will be made to feel crap no matter how hard they try.

1= Dangerous Gamble
2= Take the stats with a pinch of sale.
3= Risk destroying the longterm motivation of your key audience to please a potentially much smaller one.

If you must do silly things like this, you should at least put these maps in a special tier, make new players realise that these maps are well played out.

Possibly even disable rankings on them and whatever else you can to make new players realise that the most popular old maps are not something to get upset about if their performace goes down the pan.

literally put a warning on them, that way you'll at least please the old players and at least make new players hyper aware of the situation.

If a 'new blood' were to play a 'old blood' and that new blood is supposedly better, he should win in the end whatever the map it is, as long as they have had quite a few hours of practice on the map...

It's not really an exponential function.

The more you play the more you become good on it that is true, but the function of this would be logarithmic really :D (if not asymptotic)

Well you got me. I think you're making a big deal out of something of small (or no) importance, compared to the joy most of the quakers will feel when playing one of quake's alltime favorite duel map.

I have played certain quake 3 players who have played some of the old favs for years and I have played them on the new maps and its quite clear that despite being reasonably closely matched (in the truest sense) their map expereince is making huge differences.

Map experience is a huge advantage.

You can predict player movement/positioning better, you can hit shots based on revised sniping angles, and a lot more, stuff that does take a long time to learn and can have major impacts on the outcomes of the game.

When you play a map like ZTN, for some people the map is so played out they know every situation.
It can take a fresh player 1000's of games to get to that level.

Yes and some also lie because their ego hangs on how well they perform on a map they feel comfy in.

If you were a new player to ZTN you would still be a significantly better player on that map after the 1000 game compared to the 500th game.

This isn't tic tac toe where the maximum gameplan can be absorbed in a 200 or so duels like some would want some people to believe.

Must be sad for some people to be that corrupt about their gaming ability or that cluess and robotic about their play that they don't even know why thye do well anymore.

It's the weakest and most pathetic reason to be anti-old maps. Knowledge and experience is just as much a skill as reflexes and map knowledge is quickly caught up as the barrier for entry starts at the most advanced (You don't need to learn everything from the past 10 years) stage.

hub3aeroq3 and nodm9 were my best Q3 maps, probably because they weren't overplayed as much. Maybe I chose them because I wasn't as outdated as them as I was on ztn or dm6.
I'd love to see any new cpm player play me on cpm3.

Map knowledge isn't everything, but it certainly plays a very very big part in one's skillset.

I'm right. No one in the world can convince me otherwise. Sorry that it sounds Jamerio-ish, but we are right, really. Up to a certain point map knowledge can be an extreme advantage. Now it's not gonna matter if you match a cooller versus a jibo.
Remember zero4 versus fox on eswc 2004. Fox was sweden's hub player, zero4 hardly knew the map. Zero4 was better than fox on paper, but managed to just lose the map.
When a new pk map was just introduced, I didn't care to play it that much because I was arrogant. I got my ass handed to me in a tournament by this relative new player Ztrider. I then raped him on sacred (which I had player a lot more than he did) and then we had a close game on psycho.
Give me a new map for quake3, and give me 10 hours on it and give any other player 10 hours on it, the result is going to be a lot closer than if you put us against each other on dm6.
Everyone knows every single situation. Why? Because they have played the same scenario over and over again. They know all the best positions to fight from, they know the key rail shots, they know the sounds positioning, they know the spawnpoints, they know every possible routes, it just gives so much more advantage to a player who hasn't completely overplayed the map. Shit I have sooooo many hours on cpm3 it's unreal, I know every single situation and I can dream that map and run it backwards. There is hardly anything more to learn and it's completely played out.
Believe me or not, I think map knowledge is a very big part in people's success. Hold an eswc with all new maps and believe me you are going to see many eager, new people qualifying for the tournament.

What are you arguing about? Of course its a huge advantage if you know the map. It's like knowing how to tie your shoe laces or counting money. You're talking about basic knowledge. The thing is, once you get down the spawn runs, aiming positions and all the things you've listed, what you have is the layout of chessboard, the next step is to get to actual game play, strategy.

What fundamental quality of the game has not been brought up in all the maps that has been played over the years? Either you just want to shuffle the cards or you're saying there is gameplay scenarios that have not came up through out the range of all the maps from ztn to t4. In the later case I think you're totally wrong. There is only so much you can do with a dual map and Q3 attributes, and it's all been done. The only thing left is to mix things up so that people learn new map geometry, the strategic gameplay will stay the same. I am actually all for that, hurray for new tactical positioning and learning new routes. The only problem is that I don't think anyone has come up with anything better than ztn, yet.

That's definitely not true. When Cooller plays Jibo on ztn, they're not 'not thinking'. They are thinking very hard, and you can see the mistakes sometimes, 5 moves down the road. And this is why it's awesome.

My argument is about how much map knowledge matters, it's safe to say players like jibo and cooller have pretty much the exact same map knowledge.
Anyway, this is going nowhere, I firmly believe that map knowledge is key in one's success.
Prove me wrong, create five new maps and hold a big tournament and see what happens. Unfortunately this won't happen :(

No, you are correct. Map knowledge matters a lot. However, 'how much matters' is a very badly worded argument. You have to abstract things out more. It matters because it's a key building block. Thus it matters in the same level where being able to aim well with all weapons does, being able to time does, etcetera. It's a key building block out of which you build the whole, and without it things will fall apart. However, once you get the hang of it, that block doesn't matter any further. And that's key. The point about CPM, is that there is little built on top of that as opposed to VQ3. When players are similar but one is much better with one of the BASIC SKILLS, that player has a huge advantage. However, once you have the basics down in VQ3 there is a lot of you can improve on strategy wise, which is what Cooller vs Jibo are showing. Anyway, looking forward to five new maps as well.

so whats the problem then? average joe deosnt have to paly top palyers and if some wants to succeed in ql, then he has to train anyway. and if he has the skill and some experience in any fast fps gerne he can also learn the maps fast by

You are so right. Currently QuakeLive is gaining attraction from a lot of new players, coming from other gaming communities. It's interesting for them to compete in this game, especially since it's now a little bit more friendlier for starters. A lot of persons decided not to start before QL, before the domination of Quake3 players on their known maps was just too much for them.

I personally have nothing against this step, since it shows us newbies a proper designed and playable map.

Many starters will have a hard time against the experienced players and skill balancing will be even harder now I believe.

I hope that really new and fresh maps are coming out soon. I do not think that the creativity is already gone. Not besides the developers to build the maps, and also not from us old and new players, who want to have a new challenge.

Thats why they made a matchmaking system right!?
To prevent new players from facing the highskilled ones.And the high skilled ones they either know the map or they learn it in a matter of days.I dont know if air-r4p3 played q3 before or not I just see he is known in ql...anyways if he didnt he is a good example that players at high skill can learn fast cause they know the movement,weapons and they have aim (he did good in EMS afterall even if he didnt make it through groupstage).New players will just learn the map beetwen eachother until they master it enough to face the skilled ones.There will always be skill divisions in competition and the skill gap...NOT EVERYONE can come to top only the dedicated ones can and ztn as a map does not affect that in any way.After all 90% of highskill players know this map its fucking ancient those new ones that dont...well they found themselfs first time with quake in quakelive!

not to mention dm6 has always been ridiculous on duel and dm13 is a weird version of nodm9 (although it's playable and balanced anyway).

how is it going to take any longer? I started in 08 on maps people played for years and there's now there's just a couple handful of players that can beat me in the area. If you want to get good you'll play under any circumstance to get better. Someone experienced can just wing the map and win easily against someone new in a game like this anyways.

Aerowalk by Mattias Konradsson, aka Preacher, for Q1 (which was added to Q3 by Hubster), it is generally considered one of the best duelling maps both for Q1 and Q3.

Mattias is a very friendly guy, if you contact him I'm sure you can work something out (he didn't mind Hubster adding his map to Q3, so likely he won't object to it added to QL).

a.football/soccer/baseball/golf are excruciating to watch for me, yet half of the world seems to enjoy those somehow. I find no spectacular value in those, but when I see quake I'm, for the most part, truly fascinated with the action.

I know your 420 bleh blah example works against my point, but this is one extreme case when the game went into its sweet depth that only knowledgeable fans can enjoy. For the rest 95%, quake is a fast paced, stable flow, and visually impressive spectacle. Well, maybe not for you, but when i first saw it, I was amazed.

There are two reasons I can think of as to why they've made some industrial maps instead: 1. The old "gothic" maps had bloody and "satanic" (hate to say that word) elements in them, which goes against the E-for-everyone thing they're aiming for now. 2. The gothic stuff is very much a 90s "cool" which now is very pass�.

What's idiotic is adding ztn because only a handful of whiny Q3 players can keep on playing the same map over and over again. No one here is against adding good maps, but what is stopping them to make new good ones?

You don't get to decide whether this is a "GOOD" thing or not for QL. The problem is that once maps like ztn are added nobody is going to play the new maps in tournaments. Tournaments in general have a small pool of only about 5 maps and once things like ztn are added to quakelive the first maps to be kicked out are the new ones. Not because ztn is a better map, but because the dominant opinion of the experienced players will always be to include the older maps because the time they have invested into them will give them a competitive advantage.

I have (on and off) been following quake3 for at least 10 years, and personally I'm sick to death of maps like ztn, dm13 etc. It would be a great thing from at least a spectators point of view to freshen up the map pool a bit. You are in a unique position in quakelive in that new maps added will be available to all players, giving them the sort of exposure that was very hard to do in the past. I understand that creating new maps is a lot more work as adding old ones, but still if you must add old maps atleast add some that are not as completely overplayed as ztn

Peoples opinion on whether a map is "good" or not is highly correlated to their ability to win on it. Having played a map for a gazillion years compared to your opponent gives you a big edge. A big edge equals a big chance to win, winning equals fun, fun equals a distorted opinion on something being a good map..

So if your idea of fun duels are two people running away from eachother for 15 minutes with 200-200 armour, until one wins 1-0 in overtime thats fine. Me? I'd rather watch something else, like a professional grass growing competition.

Outside of my own peformance on t6, I think Almost Lost is a great 2v2 map, and that's where it should primarily be played. It hasn't yet, because of the difficulty of locking teams to 2v2 in TDM, but that should change soon.

add TDM 2v2 separate gametype with max 2 players in both teams and add on maps 2v2 items layouts.
for example items on dm6 is good for 4v4 tdm but not for 2v2.

This has nothing to do with the game developer. Talk to tournament organizers about their map pool. A ton of players want to play ztn, because they enjoy it. New maps never had a problem being introduces as long as they were as good as or BETTER than the current maps. So far, there is no map that is anything like ztn.

It has all to do with the game developers, of course. Look at what maps are played in VQ3: apart from ztn and hub which were only accepted because they were already popular in qw, all other maps (ospdm5 and 6, cpm4, threewave maps) come with some mod (i.e. from game developers).

the scene tends only to play maps that come with the original game,
custom maps have a hard time.
But there is an easy way to circumvent this,
just make big tourneys using custom maps only,
so people get used to some custom maps,
and then are not influenced so much in chosing the map by the fact that it is original or not.

It's subjective. Adding ZTN makes qlive less desirable to play for ME. "Inaction" regarding new maps makes the game less appealing to me.

You seem to think I can just never play ZTN and avoid it totally, but if I ever wanted to play competitively in a league/tournament I'd absolutely have to know/play ZTN. Call me lazy or envious. I just don't feel like putting 15 hours into a map that half the ppl playing already know in-and-out. I'd rather not play qlive? Why do you want me to stick around so badly.

I look forward to a new duel map as well. I love t7, still one of my favorites. Method doesn't like t7 in comparison to his newer maps like Trinity, but I still prefer t7 out of the bunch. Fits my style of play well.

There are some reasons why some dislike t7. It does have a different flow than most maps, and yes its armor heavy especially in the RA/YA/RG area. The way I see it, is that the map geometry wise reminds me of how dm13 flows (but with a railgun in the mix). The YA pickup can be near RA, but honestly doesn't give a great advantage to the player who has just picked up RA as their armor is nearly maxed out anyways. Watch matches or demos and you'll find that most of the time that a player picks up both, they approach the YA with like 190 armor and gain a whopping 10 points. =p Yet when the down player is able to nab it, they most often have 2xYA vs their opponents RA. I'm rambling now. Truth.

Although I hate to play ztn, because I don't really enjoy it as much as other maps (dm6, hub) and I'm really bad there, getting my ass constantly whipped, I do admit it's a really good map.

However I can't say that I'm happy. Players who played it for years have an unbelievable advantage over those who didn't. So there are two ways for me and just almost everybody else being in my situation: avoid it completely or do the hard way - play it, learn "how to" (read: be beaten by large margin), don't enjoy the map/game until you'll get much better at it.

Hopefully you won't forget about hub3aeroq3. Playing this map is such a joy.

just 'Awesome' maaan. Best. Map. Ever. I normally perform much better in ztn than dm6 with higher skilled players. Its a map where brain is more rewarded than raw hand/eye cordination. dm6 is about getting control(something very hard in the begining vs pixel perfect aimers) and staying aware, while ztn is a map full of oportunities to do akward strats. That said i enjoy dm6, its a pretty straightforward map once you get the basics. But this map is about ztn so, hats off to id for pulling this one out. And thanks to the mapers and all people involved in the creation of this fine piece of art.

It has been fixed internally. I looked into the project archives for Quake 3 where the source files are located and found that a Bitterman drown sound was created. So the missing sound will finally be put into place.

Doesn't anybody realize that the years of practice are not all that valuable? Practice time =/= skill, since a lot of that practice has been played with inferior strategy, especially in the beginning of Q3. Newer players don't have to innovate, just emulate, which is easy with f.e. demos. If you copy how your experienced opponent plays, you render his superior practice time useless.

that's why there are so many cooller/cypher/zero4/any_other_top_tier kind players around. All they needed to do was to COPY them. With so many demos and so many years that was VERY EASY!

now quitting the sarcasm: copying something really good takes A LOT of practice, even if you're very talented and very skilled...

Ofcourse when facing new situations, the players copying wouldn't know how to react, in contrast with cooller who would just press up up down down a to teleport to ra and triple air rocket his enemy.

Watching just a few cypher/cooller/jibo demos you can learn all about the cornerfucking railspots.

Can't learn decision making from demos tho I guess.

gSTRUCTOR, I can say the same about Q2 maps.

Q3 community is always complaining about edited old Q3 maps. Because the maps are not like they are use to. They don't want to learn new tricks, new tactic, new spawn system, etc. They want to play as they are use to for ages. If no then they will make a vote poll about shitty changes at QL forum. After wards they will get what they want.

There are people from CS (series), COD (series), WOW, QW, Q2, WSW, UT (series)... Those players really like QL. The new web system, for free game, etc. This is for everyone so great, especially for new comers. But the advantage which Q3 players have in QL ruins QL totally. Lets say, I'm from Q2 and I play Q2 for really long time. I'm decent good there, I have played with all top Q2 players close games or even beated them. But in QL I wont stand a chance against a Q3 player, unless if I play QL 24/7 per day. The same is by the rest of the gamers. Some people from UT plays FPS for ages too, just like Q3 players do, but they wont stand a chance against them.

All what I want to say is. This is really bad idea to put old Q3 maps in QL. Make the new ones. With new maps the skill will be more balanced.

Quake Live = Quake 3. I don't even know why the douchery at id software decided to not make Q3 maps work in Quake Live, oh because of the ranking system which could just be shot down from the get go, as it has no true bearing on anything, or was is the banners?

You're a part time hypocrite. If this was Quake 2 and that suck DM1 map was included you'd cheer as an idiot, including your buddy Purri with whom you'll agree even if he says sex with underage boys is the best.

But that aside. Nobody fucking cares. One year down the road and there's going to be 5 maps played over and over again, while the rest rots in the corner, like it has been with Quake, Quake 2 (the worst of them all) and Quake 3 moving on to every single FPS game there is.

Cause people are retards, people like you, me, everyone. However I quit playing TDM and 1v1 and moved to CTF 'cause it was the biggest douche bag community in the history limiting themselves to maps I could count on one hand. At least in CTF I had a map pool that spread to one and a half hand.

Maybe now when I'm pushing 30 I see this differently, but I'd play every fucking map there is, bad, good, catastrophic, as long as a play the game and have fun and some competitiveness, which you can get out of most maps. But there's too much retards around which vote for their favourite map, or in other words, the map that had them drop school, as soon as they loose a point.

That said, I miss the days of WinQuake, where episode maps were turning the rounds, and you had a woop-dee-doo biggest map pool in the history of all games at your disposal, and games were actually fun and competitive including START the fucking introduction.

Actually, the Q2 map pool has changed over the years. Of course q2dm1 always stays, but the comunity has integrated new duel maps at different moments, something the Q3 comunity only did at the very beginning and then never again.

Yeah, it's not like we've had hub3tourney1, ffdm2, cpm1a, hub3aeroq3, pro-q3tourney7, pro-nodm9 being used over the years.

In the past few years it may have stopped but at the same time the community has been dead so that's no surprise (And even then online cups have used pukka maps et cetera).

Edit: Also, pro-q3dm6, pro-q3tourney4 are different to the originals which were used at first and q3tourney2 and pro-q3tourney2 have been used all.

Well, I don't see it the same way, but I understand that argument. The way I see it is: Those maps were tried to be added to the map pool by corageus well intended people, but were dropped after a short while. They stay as sidekickers to the pool, but not really members of it. Don't get me wrong, I think there is many people in the Q3 comunity they'd like those maps to be real part of the pool, and I side with them. But at the end, something happens with Q3 that it always finds the way to exclude any new thing.
EDIT: And note: there's nothing further of my intention than starting a Q2 vs Q3 flamewar. I'm just trying to point out what I consider a sad aspect of Q3 evolution that I wish could be improved.

The problem was, as I see it, that most of those maps just aren't very good.

Q2 had/has a smaller community and it has no professional scene at all so there was no need to be concerned with quality in the same way. A more casual scene will always be more accepting of things of a lower quality.

Q3 with its big money competition had all the players worried about being perfect before it could be used which obviously meant that most maps didn't stand a chance of getting near, let alone breaking into the map list.

This isn't having a go at the Q2 community in any way

2. We accept new maps only if they're good. If we're conservative enough to play a 10y old game, trust me, we sure don't let mediocre maps into our business.

I do contest that the standards aren't more relaxed though, I'm not saying the maps are bad but people are more relaxed at what they play. In Q3 people got so caught up in the whole QUAKE 3 IS A FUCKING SPORT ZOMG side of things that they only wanted to play the "perfect" maps.

I do think most Q3 maps are shit though, wonder what exactly that makes me, some sort of hypocrite type thing I guess.

All I want to have in this game is a bit more balance. QL is the key for FPS gamers. Everyone can play it since the game is for free, besides the game is pure fun. But such huge advantage between Q3 players and the rest of the gamers ruins the fun in QL.

It's a great map so I'm happy. It basically rewards the opposite of what I'm good at, and still I love it and wish to learn. People have a bajillion years head start on me at Q3, DM6, DM13, bla bla bla, so this is no different and if I or anyone else was going to get turned off we should have left ages ago (or never come in the first place). This is a free, browser based version of Q3. Lacking new good maps, I'll take old good maps. Oldschoolers having a head start is a fair point, but so is what the anonymous dude said. It doesn't take 10 years from now for us to get where they are now after 10 years. If there will be tournaments generating motivation, new people who deserve it will catch up.

Most of the "it's so unfair" looks like a bunch of QQ to me. I guess I do feel a bit sorry for the people who are truly - not the ones using it as an excuse - sick and tired of playing the same maps since forever. Can't relate but can sympathise.

I played/won 90% t6/t7 matches which means skillmatching make me tier 3, i guess.
I loose to a lot of players on dm6 where skillmatching says: "your skill higher" because I got skill but I lack of mapknowledge.
Same issue will be for ztn.

so skillmatching is fucked up again by ztn and it will be hard to fix it. Except they will do skill by map which wont happen...

don't thin this is much of an issue after a couple of plays. skillmatching in the determines that you're a middleskilled duel player because you're good on one map and not so good on another one. i really dont see the issue here. back in q3, i was decent on ztn and got my ass handed to me on every other map. so what? stop being so serious about that game

I would have liked to see the 6 maps in 6 weeks all be new maps. The old maps could have been added anytime after the new maps with an update. It seems now that a map contest is the only way to get new maps into QL. Maybe I'm wrong..

What the fuck are ID doing? No old maps FFS! we can't keep play maps that players have played for 9 years. Just listen to what Zero4 says in his latest Carmack interview:

"Now every player know exactly what to do in any situation and the one who do it best wins"

Sort of if i remember right. And that wont create new styles and tactics and for the new players to be able to get to the top will be extremely hard!

This is not noob friendly at all, why were id so stupid anyways and made quake live in the first place? This just make me want to quit QL all together.

I dont see why people are so concerned about new players getting raped on overplayed maps like ztn. If they are new then anyway if its new or old map their will get RAPED. If you are in community u should not only think about YOURSELF, and why u cant constantly win on "new " maps (with noobs : P ). If u want or not most played map will be dm6 and not only cause its played 100000 times but its just good. I saw that hub was played in q2 also then if its in q1,2,3 why not ql. I love to see best maps from q4 and q2 also, and offcourse some GOOD new maps.

I may have been living under a rock, but I didn't notice any petitions to remove DM6 from QuakeLive. If you don't want the map, then don't play it.

I don't see how 10 years of playing Quake 3 is a problem with ZTN if everyone plays DM6 anyway. DM6 is what most newbies want to play right now.

If the map delivers joy to people, then seriously... why not?! Most people probably play QuakeLive to have fun, not to become better than the old Quake 3 players with the *boo hoo* experience on the maps.

Those idiots who whine about the fact that the pros have played the map for too long are barking up the wrong tree. Fucking harass the tournament organizers. They are the ones who decide the mappool not ID. And if you don't like it, boo-hoo. No one really cares. I didnt know Tourney7 neither Tourney6 and I HAD TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY ON IT and after 50 matches on each map I LEARNT how to play it.

When u play 50 matches on a map if u're not STUPID u'll learn the map and probably more... i mean, tactics and so on...

Dont wanna get raped?, pick a friend who didnt play the map neither and play it for 10 hours, after that, search for a 'pro', challenge him and play another 10 hours then u'll be ready to play good ztn's ...

ZTN is probably the best Q3 map ever, balanced, frenetic and enjoyable to watch and of course to play... Why the hell ID cant put it @ QL? When QL is (YES IT IS) QUAKE III WITH FUCKING WEAPON BALANCE AND WEB BASED!

If u dont want to play it JUST REMOVE IT @ Tourneys like i used to do with tourney 7... u'll have to play the map, but less than other maps

I get your point and that was the way I played but there are 4 maps out now (I dont count t6 as an old one) which gives q3 players a favor.

1 map which have to be my choosen map (t7) and then? 4 maps left and my knowledge of them sucks as hell.

There is no way to win 2 maps (likely ztn and maybe dm6 as a decider) which are known for years. Thats my point.

Best post in the thread. Any other argument for/against the merits of adding ztn is pointless when you consider the effects of bringing the stagnation of Q3 into QL.

It's not that the map itself is to blame, it's the mentality of Quake players who still play dm6 99% of the time in QL/Q3. Granted, it's a lesser evil compared to other maps in QL, but it's not like it was any better in Q3. I'm still trying to figure out how hub managed to make it into regular use.

Unless you are playing in a tournament (nobody is), you should really stop playing maps simply because they are what a tournament might use, or has used in the past. I'm not talking about ztn in this case, but dm6/t4.

Quite the opposite. I can agree with it being in events, but people will play dm6/t4/ztn to death simply because they are used by tournaments, even if they will never actually enter a tournament themselves.

ZTN is a good map for tournament play, but there might be others that will be good that likely will never get enough attention simply due to the fact that maps like dm6/t4/ztn exist at all. This stagnation is bad for both casuals and competitors.

It's in the hands of the organisers to bring good NEW maps into the rotation from time to time. CHOICE is never bad.

There is also a lot that the game's producers can do. Have a "featured demo of the week" section where you put interesting matches people can watch when they are bored. Promote new maps there.

There's something wrong with not wanting a map in a game "because it's too good."

2004 - ESWC added three CPM maps to the mix (I think cpm1 or something and cpm15, but I am not sure)
2005 - hub stayed and DM13 was brought back as nodm9

I think the important thing is to rotate the map pool so you never say goodbye to a good map forever, but phase it in and out. That's what I'm hoping to do.

ESWC 2004 was a National Team Duel event, squad sizes of four and one player per map in a match.

q3dm13 had been dropped for years prior to ESWC 2005 and CPL picked up pro-nodm9 for some reason.

I do like the way they are handling it. They've giving you a game for free. Can you blame them for not spending 4x more resources on a game which is basically an experiment? Releasing a set of completely new maps which would all be legendary would only make a difference to a very small minority of people (like you.)

I had never really played a Quake prior to QuakeLive, although I've watched a TON of hours of tournament gameplay. I'm LEARNING the game and enjoying myself at it.

Most people who are playing QuakeLive actually could not give a crap about your problem. They like the game. If you don't like it, you can always ask for your money back ;-)

Not true. Even now, dm6 still gets used for almost everything. Newbies, and even people just moderately familiar with Quake end up following the exact trends that we do.

Most people who are playing QuakeLive actually could not give a crap about your problem. They like the game. If you don't like it, you can always ask for your money back ;-)

This isn't my problem, this is everybody's problem. If you think that the same stagnation that killed Q3 won't kill QL, you're ignorantly optimistic. Supporting these decisions is as dangerous to the community as supporting the CPL. Hiding behind words like beta or experiment is an excuse, and doesn't stand in the way of the game failing.

It's a natural problem in video games - people tend to overplay the maps which give them the most pleasure. If you get rid of ZTN and DM6, there will be DM21 and DM 29 and the other maps will be ignored.

The real problem with with all video games like Quake 3 is that they only have one wave of players coming into the community. From them on, people lose interest, get jobs, girlfriends, find WoW, get too old, whatever. A game with no consistent influx of players is bound to get stagnant.

A game needs to keep getting NEW players in. [SC2 will be great in this respect because it will have three releases. FIFA is a good model (in a bad game).] That's the main problem imo.

BGH is to SC what DOTA is to WC3 - a better example would be lost temple. However, lost temple is popular because it's good, whereas maps like DM6 are only popular because they are just not as bad as the other maps. It's this whole acceptance of "what we can get" instead of striving for excellence that kills quake.

Putting the burden of creativity on the community is a horrible business model. By the time the community can even make anything, people are already set in their ways. The creativity we had? All gone - long since ignored.

Adding ztn is a good choice, it is a quality map, proven over time.
The newbs whining around that others have an advantage, should try to learn the map instead ... map knowledge is a factor, but you can catch that up quite fast, once you have some map knowledge, the map knowledge factor by someone really experience does not really matter in contrast to skills like aiming and movement.
1on1 is anyway only for the serious players, it's not really for noobs, they should play ffa, tdm, rocket arena or ctf instead ... 1on1 is where it gets serious ...

This is a great thing for quake live and its community.

People here are confusing the availability of the maps with the map pools for tournaments. There is no way on earth that having more maps at disposal is a bad thing, and you're just close minded if you think otherwise.

What can be a problem is stagnation in the map pool for tournaments. This is something that goes along the lines of having a small unorganized community with no recognized authority (a federation or a similar entity) that is willing and has the consensus to promote change. Pretending to reach innovation by removing a map from the game is just ridiculous and narrow minded. You need good alternative maps and tournaments organizers that promote them.

Quake Live is going on the direction of making this evolution possible and what it really needs is to grow in users count. The problem of old player smashing newbie's teeth was there right from the start and it's not ZTN that will change this. The whole point of the skill matching - which still has a long way ahead - is exactly to deal with this. Just give them time, and it will eventually solve the problem.

rapha, purri, dahang, stermy, vo0 and the rest of pro gamers want to have new maps. You should listen to them. Vo0 already gave nice short explanation why so. If you want to read it then scroll up a bit.

One example of vo0's post: "Give me a new map for quake3, and give me 10 hours on it and give any other player 10 hours on it, the result is going to be a lot closer than if you put us against each other on dm6.
Everyone knows every single situation. Why? Because they have played the same scenario over and over again. They know all the best positions to fight from, they know the key rail shots, they know the sounds positioning, they know the spawnpoints, they know every possible routes, it just gives so much more advantage to a player who hasn't completely overplayed the map."

Give to the community new duel maps and lower the advantage between Q3 players and the rest of the gamers.

True, but those classic old ones will put away the new ones. Because Q3 community will dislike every new map of QL since they will have to learn something new. Very good example are T7 and T6, I have never played or seen T6 before QL, but Q3 players did. And for every Q2 player is this map really great. Few examples: me, Blanka, 1o1, Damiah..., we really like T6. But every Q3 player says, remove T6 since ztn is here.

Hope you get my point. Thats why the old maps shouldnt be included in QL.

[theory]I think the most likely way to get a new 5 map map-pool would be to release a bunch of maps and just let the players find the 5 that works best out of them. Instead of giving them 5 and tweaking them for 4 years. Cause that have produced like 1 map in q3 that was semi accepted(pukka4lol3 or whatever). I mean, ztn and hub was for q1, and dm6 t4 and dm13 was released together with a lot of other maps. I'm sure the amount of good maps for duels etc for vq3/ql would been higher if the players would be more helpful. Someone hosting tournaments, cups etc consisting of nothing but new maps.

Only place I've seen this is the so-called elitist cpma-community.
I mean, there's alot of douchebags in this communtiy aswell, no question, but filter that out and you got a fuckload of people willing to spend hours with you trying to perfect a map, giving off suggestions and pointers. Naturally, they'll do it while calling you a faggot and suggest you go have sexual intercourse with someones mother, but that's part of the game.

My point is, you brought this upon yourselves. Creating a good map isn't as easy as you think. It requires support, and sadly, I haven't seen alot of that from the vq3 community. (I'm talking about vq3 because most of the ql players came from there I suppose)

PS: And yes, mapping contests for QL is a great idea. No money, no prizes, just having a chance to see your map getting played by people all over the world. I'd enter in an instant.

I'm not expecting anything new at this point, so far of the 4 maps introduced by id we have:

Hidden Fortress - old crappy dreamcast port, No One wants to play this map in tdm/ca/whatever
Siberia - the only good release thus far.
Bloodlust - old 3wave map no one played.
ztn - old duel map everyone played.. does this mean we can expect to see hub ported over as well?

Of the 4 maps of the 6 released thus far we have 1 new and awesome map, and 3 old maps ported over, 2 of which are crap.
Way to go ID with 6 new maps in 6 weeks...

Anyone find that ZTN in QL allows for more GL spam and players are abusing it? With the way the weapon ammo system works, they can just sit there all day and spam non-stop, whereas in Q3 they would run out of ammo.
