Warkwickshire/staffs is really nice in many parts, some brilliant roads to drive on. Massive wheat fields that literally role on as far as you can see.

I enjoyed living there. You need to adopt a more the country life approach though and you'll appreciate it, which can be difficult as a 20 something or a teenager;/

mainly oracle but a few of others. they got around 400 they maintain between what will be 12 of us including me. 1 of them is Primark's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primark) where I work atm part time

Leamington Spa down the road from Warwick is a really nice town, the Assembly Rooms for example has some very nice bands playing there

I think its safe to say many bankers and many poeople in the game industry have good memeories of large royalties, but those days are mostly gone now because of the credit crunch and the simple fact that dev teams have increased by several hundred %.

If someone is on BELOW the average wage then by defintion they're probably going to be struggling compared to those the average wage. I tend to assume most people understood that and I was talking about a semi decent salary to begin with

In saying that I'm not entirely convinced that people on minimum wage are unhappier than those who are on twice as much.

People on lower incomes tend to lead more modest lives, more reliant on council accomodation. Less flash cars. Shop at less fancy plaes and don't enjoy as many luxuries, but what they don't know does not hurt. So its not as clear cut. I tend not to mix with those types so not such an expert.

The good thing about not having much is you never have the worry of losing much, unlike those who are used to a certain standard of life and are under more pressure to maintain it.

Perhaps we're both wrong. My salary has generally been average minus royalties, and its never anywhere near enough.
Hence why I'm working for myself now to change that.

After a certain threshold "hapiness" generally doesn't increase much at all in correlation with an increase in income. I can't remember what income/access to stuff (car/tv/internet) it was but it wasn't too insane an amount (£30-40k or so).

For example, sure it would be nice to have an expensive car but it's not really going to have a profound change on my ability to live a fulfilling life in comparison to "modest" car.

Most people, men especially, have trouble understanding this and are stuck in pre-teen omnipotence fantasies.

Well it's both the difference between having a really good car and any car at all, and that most goods have a sweet spot price-wise where you're getting pretty good performance but then the more expensive models are just essentially throwing away a lot more money comparitively and for essentially only slight improvements/

money problems are overrated by the vast majority of people in the uk (i.e. unless you're homeless). most people complaining are those wanting brand name clothing every month.

I can more or less afford it all now and I earn fuck all at the moment, people are idiots and overspend way too much or want way too much way too soon thus go straight for credit

I'm not going to defend how expensive living can be (or is) but you have little right to complain when you throw money away on ridiculous unnecessary shit all the time

I'm in pretty much the same position, except that I do get a good salary.

I'm still used to student life so my basic expenses are quite low. But still not having to think about money is quite a good feeling. So, I do spend more money on everything that i used. Getting lunch, going out, etc.

And then there are the extra expenses like getting you car fixed right away, buying new surfing gear, sleeping in a hotel on a vacation instead of youth hostel and friends. List goes on forever.

And I do think that sooner or later I'll get used to that. So I'm already looking forward to the potential raise in one year.

Yeah but that's my point, if you get used to that and you're unable to maintain that way of life then that's when my point kicks into place.

Say in 5 years time you want to do something different, it takes a lot of work to break the mold and maintain the same lifestyle for a career you would have presmably trained for years for.
Or you're a banker and the economy crashes and you're no longer on 6 figure bonuses.

That's why so many people are stuck in jobs they hate.
I know people in really good jobs and I know in their heart of hearts they can't fucking stand it, but know their choices are limited if they leave it.

That's the sort of pressure that low skilled poor people don't have to face. I do envy the common man from time to time.

Well, I didn't disagree with you, and I do agree now, too.

Good thing though that in engineering you have many fields to choose from and always get a good salary. Plus I also have an education in economics, with which I cuold go into banking etc (not that I want to :P)

But I have to say I'm quite happy with what I do and I have a feeling it will stay in that field for a long time.
