Also the controller is shit for pretty much every major game.

PES 2008 Wii
Is the best football game ever (PES 2009 Wii might be better I guess). It gets almost everything right (Shooting is a weak point and player stats suck), the only sad thing about it is that it's Wii only and you can't play the PC versions in the same way with a keyboard and mouse.

It's not really about the controller, it would be better on the PC with keyboard and mouse for controls.

It's better because it's the game that gives the most control over the strategic and tactical elements of a game of football while retaining all the individual based mechanics of the traditional football game.

The game resembles an actual game of football a lot more closely than any other football game on the market now, or prior to its release.

The game is all down to player skill and strategy whereas traditional football games are much more dependant on the AI controlled players.

It's not perfect of course, the shooting is rather lame, graphics are poor for obvious reasons, the master league replacement is pretty poor, it's overly simplictic on the statistic side of things and multiplayer on one TV is crowded and messy (With online being laggy and prone to dropping).

For sitting around a TV with mates then standard football games (For the time being) are mostly superior in the way that it's much easier to get going and not taxing in any way.

I fully agree that PES 2009 is the best football game out there, for all the reasons you just mentioned. What makes you think that you can't control the strategic and tactical elements with yer good 'ol Xbox controller? You did it with '08, didn't you?

I think '09 is much better than '08, as opposed to magazines and online-magazines, who write about FIFA '09 as if it's the messiah of football games.

You failed to address any point I made, all of those reasons were about PES 2008 Wii not PES 2009.

Of course you could control those elements with an xbox controller (Although it would be a pain and wouldn't be any good) but the game doesn't allow you to, instead you have to setup a strategy based on pre-created plans (Which you can tweak) using the formation setup which doesn't allow anywhere near as much control or flexibility during the actual game.

I've not read any reviews of PES 2009 or FIFA 2009 but from my limited experiences with them so far I'd say PES 2009 is a lot tighter and more football like whereas FIFA is the same old, same old, overly concerned with looking real through graphics, animations and sound.

Now i get what you're talking about tho. Gotta say, the weekend me and my m8s spent playing '08 on the Wii was a real pain.
You could blame it on the non-existing experience we had with the Wii as a whole, but yeah ... it sucked.

Anyway ... we'll have a lotta fun with '09 on the Xbox.

My housemates didn't like the Wii version either, but I put that down to the messy nature of the offline multiplayer and the fact it's so different to other football games.

it sucks.

It can't handle all the shiny graphics that most of the big devs want to employ. Other than that, it just comes down to fiddling with motion control and apparently people cba to monkey with it. A shame tbh. Oh well, back to Mega Man 9.

The Wii won't take off since it's a Gamecube 1.5 with gimmicky controls. I'd like to try Super Mario Galaxy though.

it's for casual gamers and kids. the controls are gimmicky - nintendo trying to be innovative lol. graphics = two gamecubes duct taped together.

only good games on wii = SSBB, House of the dead 2 and overkill, madworld looks pretty good as well

the wii remote is crap because it has too much latency and therfore is totally useless
without it wii is just a gamecube, a really outated computer

Too much latency? I played mario kart wii and it was excellent.

The wii is a commercial success because Nintendo has managed to target demographics of people, who usually have nothing to do with games.

E.g I ran into a high school era gf in a department store the other day, who back in the day wouldn't have nothing to do with computer & video games, shopping for wii stuff. Even better, on another geek forum, this American guy who works in a retirement home told me that the octogenarians there play wii bowling & golf

The aforementioned groups of people don't have the same expectations, so they get away with it being a refurbished gamecube.

Because they know that everybody already has Wii sports and that's the only game they're going to buy?

There a huge lot of companies doing wii games. It just happens none of them targets you as client.
