Ubuntu is bloated, and linux UI in general is horrible.

not bloated at all, it's all what you need, pretty clean and i think even smoother than mac os X.

MAYBE if you use xubuntu, but that's it.

i was on kde before,and i tried xubuntu a bit but didnt like it, gnome is better imo

KDE/Gnome are both pretty clumsy, and they are tied into just about everything Ubuntu installs, so you're stuck with the same bloat on your hard drive that you'd get with something like Vista.

well i dun think so, i tried also red hat, mandriva and more specifics distrib such as backtrack and i really had a cruch on ubuntu coz its simple and powerful.

It's simple, but at the cost of bloat. Ubuntu represents the philosophy that linux was trying to distance itself from with the use of strict software reliance. Ubuntu is good for getting into linux, but not for serious use.

Gnome UI is just terrible though i prefer it to KDE :/
Take a look at Mac OSX UI, it's better designed, it makes sense compared to the gnome one.

hey, guys. I've been using linux since 1998, which makes me fairly new as far as linux's existence is concerned, but probably much more experienced than the large majority of you nerds. I have used various incarnations of red hat, slackware, centos, fedora, mandrake, gentoo, debian, suse, yellowdog, popcorn linux, damn small linux, puppy linux, and several others. with that in mind, ubuntu is terrible.

what do you think about the concept of some people simply using their computer the way it is, and not spending half their life config'ing and compiling the OS? ubuntu delivers here.

How many different versions of linux you have used has nothing to do with how much you know about the operating system. Ubuntu isn't bad, it's just more of a casual linux.

I use Mac's only for FCP.

well you get the best of both worlds, full unix toolset and superb professional design/media apps

for me the gui is nicer to use than linux's options, and with the latest version Snow Leopard its super quick too

yea I use cs4 at home on my pc and it runs fine, but i still prefer working with it on a mac and theres loads of important professional apps that are not even available on windows such as final cut and Logic pro etc.

I pretty much have to use it for work, but I can't stop being amazed at how horrible its font rendering is, of the most annoying things. I would appreciate any advice on making it better. It would probably have to be an alternative sub-pixel rendering algorithm or a different way of handling hinting, but I'll look into anything.

I can select different font rendering methods in gnome-appearance-properties, maybe something crappy set in there? Mine looks fine.

No, I messed around with that enough to know that it's not settings but the actual thing thats shitty. Subpixel rendering with autohinting is just bearable but way worse then ClearType or even OSXs rendering on 'light' setting.

i might go back to FC10 if it does work, and just dual boot to use XP for movie editing/photoshop
