My project is mainly about analyzing the usage of violence in games and movies, and compare the two, to see if it's used differently (entertainment value and such).

And then as a sidepart I have to discuss if there's any consequenzes for the society with this violence in new media, and with focus on schoolmassacres.

Find stats for violence in the US or europe over the last 100 or 50 years, i'm pretty sure it's a steady decline right up to now (even though cnn makes it out to be doomsday everyday) ;)

uhm.. make that last 10-15 years for effect ;D (it's the relevant anyway!)

tu understand the psychological factors that are going on on schoolmassacres I strongly recommend you to watch the movie Bang Bang You're Dead, at least go close to the final at the scene where the teacher reads the main character's testament

the true is nobody will like your study if you will try to find psychological factors that make this kind of violence happening, because if your study will conclude that many kids are "supernaturally cruel" this won't cause popular hysteria like blaming video games and movies does

Well, I had to pick a main class and a sub-class for this, and I could only pick english as the main, and for the sub I could pick between danish and psychology, and I picked danish. Probably a wierd pick considering the subject. But my approach will be a bit more on the large scale, not so much about what happens with the single individual, but more what happens with society.

Nevertheless, I just finished watching that movie.

I wrote my outline of the project last night. Today the write up starts.

Anyway I can quickly translate what I've planned to write in my conclusion:

Conclusion:
There's a clear difference between how violence is works in movies and how it works in computergames. There's both bad and good parts of each difference, which makes it unable to conclude wether one of the medias is "worse" or "better" than the other

As long as the reciver understands it's not reality, then it's (most likely) unharmful. If the borders between the virtual world and the real world starts to cross then we will start to see something that CAN (not WILL, just CAN) affect us. When we start to doubt if something is real or not, then that's bad.

Violence in movies and computergames is fine, as long as the borders between virtual reality and reality don't start to cross each other.


Basically I conclude that violence in our medias are fine, as long as we are aware that it's not real. Mind you, I'm not saying that if it was real that we'd all get fucked up, but the odds are higher. That's why we should be aware of what our kids watch and play, but instead of preventing them of playing it, we should instead talk to them and explain them how it all works, and that it's not real. It's just a game/movie, and that's all. Nothing less nothing more.
Nevertheless, there's no direct link. But it can be that last bit that helps someone get fucked up. that being said, there needs to many other things that have pushed a person far out. So in the end computergames or movies is not something to hold the entire blame, only a small part. A such small part that I don't think it's something we should focus at, rather focus on important matters. Such as, what's wrong with our society that makes some people go out and shoot a bunch of other people. It's obviously not just a game or movie, because everyone watches movies and plays games more and more, and violence is decreasing.

don't know if the conclusion are the actual words you want to use in the final version, but if so I think you shouldn't use "fine" in connection with violence it's a little too positive. forgot that you probably won't write in English :P

My main subject is English, and the sub-subject is danish. Yet we have to write in danish (or well, english is allowed but not recommended :s)

nah I guess the whole thing is related to people getting used to violence while at the same time many things go completely wrong in our societies. these things combined are imo what makes people snap. while you can't blame violence in movies or games to cause all this, you can still imagine very well that there could and probably is some minor influence on people. besides, what are the reasons to use violence as entertainment? I can think of plenty reasons against, but not a single one that justifies it.

I actually touched upon why violence is used. My part conclusion for that was that the reason it is used as entertainment is due to multiple reasons, such as: easy to understand - everyone gets the good guy, bad guy, concept, even a small kid (just look at how a cartoon is often made). Another big reason is that it brings excitement into our boring every day life, most people feel the need for more excitement, not for fun that extreme sports are getting quite popular. And last but not least, our animal instincts can relate to violence, it's something every human can relate to. oh and another small thing is, with violence and such, you can make visually pretty entertainment, like big explosions, slowmotion fights, etc.

well I'm not questioning the use of violence in the way you probably think I do, but there's a different level of violence in say a James Bond movie and any Tarantino production. I just don't think you have to show the really bad stuff in all detail, there's ways to avoid it while you can still keep people excited and recognise the bad guy and so on.. I just hate the sometimes unneccessary level of detail and the pervert stuff. :(

and yeah I probably should do my own research, for that matter I've done a fair shair of own research for this project. But when you only have 6 days to make it, it's limited what research you can do yourself, if it has to be proper research. Mainly what I've done is mix some of the research I did, with research others have done, then discussed that and compared it up against each other and from the base of that drawn a conclusion.

I'm almost done writing now \o/, just polishing up on my 2nd chapter and then it's time to write the conclusion, wooho.

Asking expert opinions is always allowed and there is nowhere better to turn to. ;)


Seriously, finding the right people to ask for input and suggestions is always as, if not more, important for good research as googling or using the library.

Alright I got my grade today :)

Got 12, which is max possible grade. The only feedback I got was that it was a solid assignment and my teacher especially liked my introduction (had a little story from when I was 6-7 years old and watched Jurassic park the first time and had nightmares cuz of it :P)

Best thing is this was for an A level class, so the grade counts twice on my exam paper. :D
