The best thing to do is buy a book (I recommend anything from SAMS). Ebooks and tutorial sites are extremely frustrating as you have to alt + tab the whole time when you're doing tutorials. If you want to build a functional site like ESR from the ground up, you're going to need to learn HTML + CSS and then PHP + SQL. Personally I just jumped into a PHP course without much HTML background and filled in the blanks as I went along. But I recommend mastering HTML first.

I agree, books are nice to learn from. If you want a quick piece of code you can just google it, but that you can do once you have learned the basics from a book.

The most important thing to "programming" is actually having the right mindset. You need to think somewhat logically. HTML and CSS are unbelievably simple. You don't really need to learn anything to use them.

You become skilled at this just by looking at other people's source, replicating it, modifying a few things, and seeing what happens.
I would disagree entirely that Google is the wrong way to get started. The web is a great resource for this kind of thing, and you can learn very quickly this way. There's really no need for any sort of 'authoritative' instruction or traditional institutional method.

Go around looking at what other people write, and try it out. Read some web 'tutorials' and try it out. You can write anything this way, and do so quickly.

You get into some problems when you start using random web pages and you take them as any sort of definitive, infallible source of information. Most programmers are bad. You want to learn by emulation so that you can get a quick grasp of the nature of a language. I don't think I'd advise learning security practices the hard way -- something that you're going to do if you just copy and paste from the various source / webdev / blog sites out there.

Once you get comfortable using your language of choice, well, then I'd recommend doing some further reading about professional, secure programming practices. Don't just limit yourself to PHP (or god awful MySQL, for that matter), either. Do a little research and see what you think would work best for you. Granted, PHP is very easy to get into for a new programmer (scripter), but there ARE other languages -- many of which are better, and, indeed, make secure programming easier.

PHP will be a good place to start, though. Just don't try to go public with the first bit of code you've written and risk your reputation or the personal information of your customers and patrons. Do make good use of PHP.Net (that's a website - www.php.net). It is an excellent source of information and documentation (just type in php.net/WHATEVERYOUWANTTOLOOKUP - e.g. php.net/printf and it's there at your fingertips, with a lot of helpful user contributed source and advice).

All of that said, here is my number one tip for secure programming: don't trust anything. don't trust user input; don't trust server input; don't trust YOUR input; don't even trust your code. Make sure every bit of information is verified to be what it's supposed to be, and then check again before doing anything with that information.

And in case you don't really want to get into programming/scripting, I'll just re-iterate what I said before (which has been echoed a couple times by others), to be on topic: use a CMS or forum software (wordpress, drupal, phpBB).

...Or, if you want to learn web development properly (web design and web development are not the same thing mind you), follow these steps (for the Java side of the world anyway):

1) Learn what HTTP does
2) Learn HTML, CSS
3) Learn Java basics
4) Learn servlets, then JSP and JSTL
5) (Optional but essential) Learn a web application framework (I suggest SpringMVC/Spring WebFlow)
6) Learn how to design a proper database
7) Learn a persistence framework, i.e. Hibernate (or pickup SQL basics and learn plain old JDBC - yuck)

Don't bother learning ridiculously complex stuff like that, and don't even bother learning application frameworks. Just start with the basics.

Also, I don't really know what you mean by learn what HTTP does. It doesn't do much of ANYTHING. It also really has no major influence on your ability to write web applications.

Granted, being a little more knowledgeable isn't going to hurt anything. That's just putting the pieces together. But unless you're running Slashdot, you don't need to start worrying about keep-alives and pipelining and cache headers and content-types.

I didn't support Java as more proper than PHP/Ruby, you'll see that if you read my post more carefully. I simply point out that web development comprises of a more complex architecture than the HTML-PHP-SQL combo and in order to learn it properly you have to invest more time than this simplification implies.
OTOH, I do see Java/J2EE as a more mature and here to stay technology than PHP or Ruby (I have been on the software industry for more than 5 years). In the end, it's all about the money and you can never go wrong with the C/Java route ;)

PHP will be here for a long time. Ruby probably will not. Web development doesn't consist of a more complex architecture than HTML+PHP+SQL for the most part. That's the way things are being designed now.

I suggest you use a CMS. (wiki for cms and see what it means). a popular one is wordpress (www.wordpress.org) wich is fully open source and fully modable :). most CMS needs a webserver (apache for example), php and mysql.
a more advanced open source cms is joomla.
