I spent about a year playing and really for me it got boring quickly right after the expansion, but if your finding it fun and have a few people to play it with give it ago.

Play this instead. You can hunt low-midlevel for the same money WoW subscription costs you and the community is mature and helpful.

For sure, just the ideas of the game didn't appeal to me. It seems all the newbies to the game feed money into the economy which is then picked up by the more advanced players. You could either sit there farming these mobs for months or just deposit $50 and get to the same stage. Either way I didn't really see the point of it.

Do the guys playing 50/100 NL cost you a thing? No. It is the same case with EU, bigger guns = bigger risk/reward but the expected return for each player is the same regardless of his skills.

q3 is always an option of course, but it's kind of a weakening option here in the states. There's barely anything going on short of ctf pickups and the triple threat tourney that's going on.

Fury also looks like it could be pretty cool. I guess it will depend on the little things like how buggy the game is and how well they market it. It's got a lot going for it and the dev team seem really interested in competitive gaming (check out Fury Challenge).

Tryed the beta, if you're not REALLY REALLY REALLY into pvp then give it a miss.

Just not into MMOs. Sorry. I just don't have the time. I have too much going on with building my business, finishing school, and making time for all my family/friends/girlfriend. Hell I barely have enough time for the Triple Threat Tourney let alone other games.

Fury isn't really a traditional MMO. It's more of a cross between a deathmatch game and guild wars with some original ideas added - really fast paced instanced pvp (FFA DM, Team based LMS, Team based CTF style gamemode, etc). There is no levelling as such, and character progression beyond a certain point just gives you more choices going into a game as opposed to making you more powerful. Character progression comes from doing well in the above games (there isn't any pve). I didn't really play the closed beta enough to get much of a feeling for the game, so I'm downloading it to give the open beta a go. The $1,000,000 sponsored tournaments intrigue me tbh... :P

I gave it a go earlier. It's still really buggy (actually I've encountered more bugs in this version than when I played 2-3 months ago) and it's nowhere near ready for open beta. Same story different game...

I still think it could be awesome if you played it enough to know the game. There's just so many skills etc to learn that it might take a while. Gonna have to play it for a couple weeks to see if I like it or not.

i played about 4 days of the trial and got bored quick, too much running around for ages and doing boring shit to get anything back.

I was just like you, spitting on WoW players even when I had actually no knowledge of the game just because it killed my quake clan on the release, every one but me started playing it.

Back in January, I was burned out with Quake, just having finished a cup we were practicing hardcore for and I needed something to change my mind. I still had 2-3 guildmates who played warcraft on a somehow regular basis. I thought I'd give it a try, went to the store and bought the vanilla version (not TBC yet). The four of us started playing on a new server, so we wouldn't be behind gear and level wise.

Now I have always played RPG (final fantasy etc) as a kid and I enjoyed the Warcraft world from playing the RTS's a bit so I got into it pretty easily. From the start we said we wouldn't play without each other so no one would be left behind, and from the start I couldn't keep that, I had to level up and see what was next, everything was all new and shiny and even though I was a total noob, I enjoyed myself and the game. Once you get to learn your class and its spells, it's pretty easy. We were only two to reach level 70, the other two got bored fast and pissed I didn't wait for them. It took us a bit over a month to reach the level cap, but this is when the fun actually started.

I'm a perfectionist so when I learned I could get better items doing this and that, you bet I did it. I was just running the same instances (Dungeons with a five player limit) over and over until I got all the gear I wanted. I was barely touching Quake anymore, it just wasn't as fun. But unlike some other people I know, I kept hanging on IRC and kept in touch with clan members and all.

The game is just plain easy if you have half a brain and some free time. If you come from an other game like a FPS or RTS you'll have no problem being good very fast. It is also very rewarding, the more you invest into it, the more you get. I got into the "raiding world" very fast. Got myself my first guild, started to do the low-end raiding content available with TBC and quickly climbed up the "ladder".

I don't know if you're familiar with the terms yet, I'm more of a PvE player (you kill bosses and the content of the game) but I do PvP now and then (2v2,3v3,5v5 or battlegrounds). Basically there is always something to do in WoW. You have guild chat, so you don't need to check IRC anymore, everything is made from the inside. I have been playing for a little over seven months now, and I averaged seven (7) hours daily in WoW, and that is every day during that period. There hasn't been one day I have not logged in. It does sound pretty scary, especially since I managed not to miss a single day at the university and finished the year top of my class. But fuck it, I'm having fun, and I haven't found myself making up lame excuses not to go out with friends anymore to play WoW instead, then I'll start to worry. It is a very fun game if you pick a class you enjoy playing, tho it does get very very addictive.

I barely play anything else now, maybe one pub game every three weeks to keep the aim on par. I got sucked into that from a gaming point of view.

It is a very enjoyable game, I'm sure you spent hundreds of hours playing Quake/UT, so why would it be bad to do the same with WoW? I laugh when people refuse to pay 13€ to play a game. Seriously, what's 13€? I'm almost paying the same to go to the movies. And I think I actually saved money from starting playing WoW. Tell me, how often do you change your mouse? Your headphones, your mousepad? Thinking of buying a new soundcard to duel better? All of this will become totally useless if you start to play WoW. I don't give a fuck if my mousepad is dirty anymore or if my mouse doesn't have the best DPI (never did, but you get the point). I haven't bought any of those things this year, I probably saved around 80-90€ because if I had kept playing Quake, I would have probably bought a new mouse and a pad to go with it. I don't even remember I pay for WoW until some people mention it.

Oh and to tell you how easy this game actually is, I started seven months ago and I'm now in a TOP10 guild worldwide (no kidding). It's like picking up CS now and being in SK by christmas.
If I could go back to when I started and have the choice never not to, well I'd do everything just the same. Just buy a month, or find a friend who doesnt play that much anymore and use his account. If you're enjoying the 10 days trial, why stop there :)

That's the main problem with WoW, it's all about gear and PvE. The PvP has no significant impact on the game or it's game world which makes it both pointless, boring and repetitive. The World PvP isn't even worth mentioning - it's just plain shit.

So what's left? Yeah, repetitve raiding for better gear. Gear which will be worthless when the next expansion comes - rince and repeat all over again. That's so fun!

saying that pvp aint getting much love is crazy talk and you know it. everything is getting balanced because of the PVP system in the game at the moment. the whole arena ladder system with lan finals etc isnt enough i guess? did you see anything from leipzig about the next expansion? alot of it is pvp talk and balancing. i'd agree that a new BG or two would be awesome but it still does the trick when it comes to exciting their players. playing 5v5 arena on PTR with all 5 laned was probably one of the most fun gaming experience i've ever had.

and you -tried it- with a premade character? that means you missed the whole experience with halaa and so on.

and all players don't play for "haxor loot" like you, they play to see new encounters and "clear the current content" -> illidan atm.. in next expansion it's arthas. you can't tell other peoples way of having fun is wrong, except if you're massman because he's the allknow god of everything (even tho he never plays it)

or lore, some people play for lore. there's a pretty cool story behind it even tho i'm not that intrested. there's a big RP server network that has alot of players enjoying that part of the game.

WoW is just way too shallow for me. There really is nothing to it. It's the exact reason why the game is so popular, and also the reason why I stopped playing ~4 months into retail. Blizzard's support and the sheer number of people playing are drawing in more players and keeping any other MMO from getting big at the moment, which is a shame, because there are other games that could be so much better than WoW.

There is very few classes and no variation within them (talents are very limited and every class seems to have a "best" talent build that everyone uses anyway).

Priest -> disc/holy/shadow. disc is for priests who will take alot of damage. holy is mostly for pve. shadow is for dps. enough in one class for me.
Druids -> feral/balance/resto. feral is for tanking and dps, there are a few variations in there aswell. balance is for dps (could be used for tanking but its not that great at it since they have the feral tree for that). resto says itself.. its for healing.
Rogues -> assasination, combat and subt. i don't know the exact specs here but rogue has mostly one purpose and that is to deal damage. there are alot of different weapons and setups (crit vs ap gear etc) to chose from.
Paladins -> holy/prot/retri. with holy you become the most ubar healer ever known to man. with prot you can tank almost as good as a warrior (sometimes better at aoe packs). retri makes mediocre dps.. some say that its good in raids. im not sure but its alot of fun in PVP and its viable.
Hunter -> ok, i can admit. i don't know much about hunters except they can spec beastmaster which gives them a better pet. marksmanship and some other tree usually focus on the caster (bower ^^) beeing better.
Mage -> arcane/fire/frost. just as the rogue tree they are all meaning to deal damage. however frost is more of a survival spec while fire is more burst dmg (if you spec correctly with some arcane with it). deep arcane spec is new to me but some seem to use it in PVE. a popular spec is to use POM (precense of mind) + Pyroblast which is easly handled with if the opponent knows what hes doing.
Shaman -> elemental/resto/enhancement. elemental does magic damage and can heal 'ok' since he has alot of +healing from the +dmg & healing he gets from items, it's not as good as resto since he doesn't spec in it but its 'ok', just as a shadow priest i guess. resto is ubar for healing and some say its the best healer class in game. ehnancement with the right gear is very effective. one of the worlds best 5v5 teams use one in their setup for arena.
Warrior -> arms/fury/protection. if you spec fully arms and some fury you probably have a 2 hander since you get the mortal strike attack which is great for any pvp with healers in it. you can help burst targets down. you can also go fury with 2 handers but then you lose the MS buff. most people who use the fury tree goes dualwield to deal dps, this spec is also "ok" for tanking just as ele shaman or shadow priest is for healing. the best tanking spec for warriors is though protection which any fool could realize really.
warlock -> affliction,demo,destro. three different specs who do similar things but not really. i've never played one myself for real but i've heard and listened to those who do. affliction seems to be a "dot spec" which is pretty good for pvp since you have unstable affliction down there. gives a paladin or priest no chance to dispell it if its focused in 5v5. can be a bit rough if you get alot of people hammering it. demo is mostly for grinding if i got it right since you get alot of "pet skills" which helps you through tanking the mobs. i'm not sure if its any good in pve/pvp but i still see people using it in battle grounds so i guess it must be ok. destro is a fire spec tree which gives you more damage on castings like immolate or shadow bolt.

yes, to have a good pvp team you probably need all classes. compare this to any other game with classes and you'll prolly see very fast that you need a few different setups to be able to reach the top.

well, this is a good weapon to actually use that comes out of crafting. the crafting process itself may not that be exciting but you do have to gather materials. and getting different materials makes different weapons, i don't see anything wrong with that. making random items brings out luck which i don't think is a good system, let's say you collected stuff for 2 weeks and it ends up shit, i wouldn't like that at least.

i see all different types of specs and i do believe that there is a difference between them. it's not a hard game, i won't say its a hard game but there's different playstyles between the different specs (if you actually want to know how to deal max damage for instance). casual gamers can play every class without "problem", but not perfect it.

yeah well i understand how, i used to be like that aswell. i realized that i missed much of the things i like in other parts (like quake or beeing with my parents more etc). but it's all about what people wanna do at the moment i guess :]. anyhow, the thing about wow is you don't log off as you turn off quake when you're done with an instance or whatever. that's like turning off irc if you leave the computer for a leak.. you just leave it on and that gives that amount of hours i guess.

thanks for you indepth analysis, and i respect you invest 7 hours a day but I am deliberately avoiding that if i decide to play. ill limit myself to 3 hours 4 times a week something like that, i certainly wouldnt go over 12 hours a week, because to be honest its just a easy game like u said with a long journey, you can put as much or as little time into it without it effecting skill, unlike other games like rts and fps.

At first I didn't play on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday, but I had four days weekend cause of a light schedule and this is when I played hardcore. Seven hours is an average over months.

I tried wow for a while and it took ages to get anywhere. difference of opinion i guess. some people like dungeons and dragons but personally i think fantasy is overrated. Tolkien wrote the book on it and thats where it should have stopped

make your own mind up and weigh up the possibility of setting your alarm to get up and meet your foreign online buddies to kill some stupid dragon for some stupid ring/sword/scroll.

that being said, but being respected and rewarded by hardwork in wow doesnt reward you the same for example as if you studied and got an awesome career, or if u played quake 4 hardcore and become number 1, or if you played poker the same amount of hours and worked ur bankroll up to high stakes, the rewards are so small in WOW as it offer very little financial gain, which is basically what i would always look for when investing a vast majority of my time into something.

Im talking strictly in vast amounts of time, if you only spend a few hours here and there, i totally agree with what u said reward wise, but its when it takes up time of other possible things you could do, life is always about the best decision for you as an individual, dont forget life is short and goes mightily fast.

just after i finished posting that my mate texted me and said he was starting out in eve online... i might give it another spin but the planetarion skill training system means you automatically have to keep playing for months to get any good at it.

World of Warcraft is really fun until you hit 60/70/80/12903819023812903 GHEGEGHEHGEEGH, but that's it.
Imo there's no real danger of becoming an addict if it isn't your first MMORPG (the first mmorpg is always played longer and more intense, and it was my first mmorpg). After you hit the max Level and run through instances, played a bit PvP you get bored really fast and quit because there is no real competition (you cant train your skills to perfection etc). You learn the basics of the game really fast and that's it.

Play if you're bored, it's fun to level.

Ive played wow a lot and the fun part is discovering the game; all the zones, customizing your character etc and to some extent doing dungeons and stuff with friends too. Wow's problem (as with lots of other stuff) is that it really gets old quick. The real problems started in tbc imo, when grinding for primals really made the game so boring. Everything you want is just a huge grind. Rep grind, raid grinding for specific items, primals grind, dungeon grinding for rep/items/badges etc.

World pvp is dead, there are no conflicts between alliance and horde anymore, all the pvp is done inside arenas. Arenas can be quite fun, although thats just a huge grind too, to get some items which will make you pvp better, and grind even more.

Wow is the perfect way to kinda waste your life for a certain period of time, and when you quit, you kinda feel like "wtf was i even doing there". At least I did.

So, as long as youre having fun and experiencing the game and the cool content it provides, and not just grinding, id tell you to continue. Just know when to stop.

ps. my review = all i enjoyed doing when i played it was going stealth into hordes main city and just taking one or two out whilst they had menu screens up in the auction house. then dieing. rinse and repeat. it just gave me lulz

I play WoW and I mostly PVP with my friends. Now I really like the PvP part of the game ofcourse there is a bit of a big random factor but if you play good you will always be rewarded in the long run.

Go play some Medal of Honor Airborne instead - it might only last a day or two, but the time it lasts is great fun (if you like WWII shooters that is - it felt like it had much more action than most WWII shooters I've played - things like infinite sprint = nice nice ;)

And spiN already give a nice list of games you should play instead.

But in the end, you shouldn't let people on some forum decide what you play, just play what you find nice to play, do you find it fun? then why not, as long as you feel it's not just a waste of time.

It's quite short, took me two days (not non stop gaming) to complete on medium difficult.

It was great fun though. The graphics were stunning and gave a nice feel to the game, and the way where you just drop on the map where ever you want and then start the mission from there, that works very very well.

I mean, it's not the best game out there, but it was a solid single player experience.

I played one character up to like level 45 about a year ago. WoW was a game I always wanted to like, but never really did. A combination of joining the sensation late and me having about as much motivation in my virtual life as i do in my real life made it a very short lived adventure ;) Enjoy nonetheless.

i played it for a while.. got my mage to 70 with all epics but i slowly started feeling that i was wasting my time doing the same shit over and over again. so i quit.

i will try wrath of the lich king when it comes out though. i think blizzard are fantastic at making games so i'll give this expansion a shot as well but im quite sure i'll quit once i hit the new level cap and the instances.

WoW can be fun if that's all you're looking for... something to play casually to unwind after a long day at work. i wouldn't recommend investing a lot of time or effort into it cuz then it gets rather boring.
