I just hope the upload speed increases by an impressive amount, the upload/download ratio has always been shit but I think this applies for most UK ISPs.

you dont get it? The point is exactly that, there is nothing special about having gigabit internet if it's just limited to a selected few. We have fairly big area on Zealand which have that, but that's not much to brag about if - as pointed out - 95% of the population don't have access to it.

But seriously, it is widely available to most people in Sweden to get this. And even if you live in the damn forest you can easily get 20+ mbit. If you live in a fairly large city like 50k+ inhabitants(hey thats "fairly large" in Sweden) you have access to it. And most of the population do live in these cities.

However, as the speeds increases it feels like the routing just gets worse and worse, when i first got 10mbit i had around 36 ms to germany(about three years ago), then it went up to 40, and it's now stuck on 48. And basicly everyone is reporting this, ping isn't the main concern of isp companies obviously since most people just look at the speed, it is however annoying to people like me.

I figured most Swedish people did live in the big cities as well, but assumed that a big part of the population still would be scattered around, it is a enormous country after all. Not so sure about the +20 mbit thing, there is a limit to how much you can squeze out of the copper after all, but ok ;)

That mainly in the suthern parts of sweden though? Southern as in south of Dal�lven. And the major cities, not all the smaller towns and villages. The city I live has like 20 000 people only and perhaps thats exactly the same thing as being a total hermit and living in the woods , but the best connection you can get here is 8mbit afaik.
It is also quite common for the people who live in either of the 3 biggest cities (especially people from stockholm) to be rather oblivious and non caring about those who doesnt live there :)

Yes might be the southern parts, because i have a few mates that live in this really small place in Sm�land whcih is in the south, called V�rnamo. Has maybe 10k inhabitants, and they've got 24mbit available.

I do however know a few guys living in the deep forests of Norrland, around Ume�, and they got fairly decent conns, the ones that live in the "village" think they got 10mbit+. Two of them however really lives in the forest, literally, and they got 8 or lower.

But i'd say getting the download speed high is very easy to get, getting high upload however is harder since it requires you to have cable or live extremely close to the tele-station, i live too far from it and my upload is crap compared to DL.

Oh yea there is a 3GB soft limit on the �29 plan with T-Mobile. It was the highest limit I could find for that price. If you need more you can get their �45 plan for 10GB which seems to be the best value in the UK.

Well my connection has been shit since around last Autumn.

My ping to UK servers has gone from 20ms (Blueyonder days) to 40ms

I used to ping 40ms to Swedish servers...

Complained at the fact that it's doubled in latency but I was simply told - 40ms is nothing to complain about.

NTL has never ever been bad for me, or anyone that I know in person. When they first started as a cable ISP the service was up and down, (note, not up and unstable) but that was what? 7 years ago?

Can honestly say, apart from customer service NTL have been flawless, and hot pings everywhere.

know a few ppl that switched to dsl a few years ago, because they had regular outages, like a day at a time once or twice a month

Definitely see if there's someone in your area that you can check it on... During peak times I used to ping 120-160 to lazery with unplayable packet loss. I sent them an e-mail after about a year and a week after the e-mail it got fixed. I'm hoping it was a coincidence so I can sleep at night.

Now I ping ~20 to lazery.

I've had NTL since Feb in West London (Ealing). Download speeds have been pretty much excellent and no downtime that I can remember. Pings however aren't always great. Connections seemd to be a bit spikey, and a dos ping reports 20-40ms fluctuating for most UK servers.

I guess it depends on the area you're in. I can't complain too much though. I had Nildram ADSL earlier and it had gone incredibly bad recently, so NTL is hugely better.

not sure I understand you. I'm using a 3Mbps cable modem in a random US city with less than 40,000 people (not so much in the US).

I have the option of getting a 10Mbps cable modem or more, and also the option of buying a DS3, if I so wanted.

this is nothing new, here; I was also using a 10Mbps cable modem back in 1997, and I've been using servers with gigabit connections since about that time.

But the new games are getting a lot more demanding and so are the amount of users, which is putting more strain on the ISP.

Particually those who just leech films etc and max out their connection 24/7

hmm... going from 4/�mbit to 8/�mbit... I hope it's not as bad as when they upgraded me from 2/� to 4/�...

the following months I had many problems with my net, and ping went a tiny bit up

seems like their servers came under much heavier load... and now they'll do it again and I'm screwed, I think.

but hey, I can get my porn twice a fast, and isn't that what REALLY matters in the end!

Yeah, I don't know if it's available in my area though as I don't know anybody around here with a BT line, I love what they say on the site... "install a BT line and check". Yeah sure, I'm just going to cancel my internet and phone on the off chance that you can provide your service in my area which is probably shit anyway.

The post code checker doesn't work... just then asks for a BT phone number.

Of course that was when I tried it a few weeks ago, just checked and the postcode checker worked. Be is in my area. Disregard everything in this post. Normally I just wouldn't bother posting it but I've typed all that out so fuck it.

Now they don't even have the 512 at night. I just had a 512 connect for office work at home. Im back to that 256 shit :/. They brought about 2 mbps speeds too, with 2 gb download limit. That'll get over in what 2 days?

I was under the impression BE boast about 25mb connections, yet it's all based on the distance from the exchange and line quality, which means they have a quick excuse for giving you a 10/15mb line that's shoddy.

besides it's ADSL and needs a BT line, fuck that.
