Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced that PLAYSTATION®3 will be launched in the PAL territories including the United Kingdom on 23rd March 2007 at a price of £425 (645€ approx).

Responding to retail and consumer demand, SCEE confirmed that initially only the 60GB model would be available, with the 20GB model to follow later in the year dependent on demand.

The UK launch day will be held at Virgin Mega Stores on Oxford Street in London.

"Virgin Megastores is the perfect partner for the launch of PS3," added SCE UK MD Ray Maguire. "We are well aware how patient and loyal our customers have been waiting for PS3 to arrive and fully intend to reward them with the launch they deserve. Plans are already well underway and we are working with local authorities to ensure we deliver the best console launch ever."

i googled: A very large number of PAL ports of games in the NES and SNES eras were done extremely shoddily. PAL runs at 50Hz, and NTSC runs at 60Hz, so rather than adjust the timing, they just made the game run roughly 17% slower.

apparently this applies to some new wii games too. if i were to buy a console id look it up before cause i wouldnt want to buy something that plays that much slower than what its supposed to.
Also i think gran turismo HD will be the best game ever :D

It happens to a lot of other games too, including AAA franchises. SquareEnix are terrible at converting their games to PAL.

Along with the speed thing, because PAL runs at 576 vertical lines or something, and NTSC runs at 480, instead of reconverting the output to the higher resolution, they leave it and you end up getting big black boarders and a squashed image on the PAL versions.

That only applies to the virtual console titles on the Wii (the downloadable retro games), all the Wii games are optimised or have a PAL 60Hz option as did the Gamecube. As far as Nintendo goes, shoddy PAL conversions died out with the N64.

Unfortunately the PS2 still had many poor PAL conversion (squashed image + 50Hz), a big culprit for this was and still is Square-Enix. FFX was crippled by it- hopefully FFXII won't be.

It happened and it still happens in every console. This will happen in this new generation too, although is not such an issue now because the three consoles support 720p/480p and give the option to use 480i, so anybody with a decent TV set can play the games the way they are meant to be played.

And it's not a Nintendo thing, it happened everywhere.

yeap try playing tekken in NTSC and then in PAL and you can even combo right because of the slower speed

standard protocol these days, xbox 1 costed money to sell, gamecube was slashed to a price so low it was costing them money, ps3 does too

the trick is that all this money is INSTANTLY made back with controllers, the near 100% profit margin on the manufacture (not design) of a game, and the ridiculously overpriced A/V cables.

Stupid price, it's hard to imagine sony messing up, but being the last next gen console and costing a lot more than 360 and Wii they're sure off to a rocky start.

PS3 sucks? Get a Wii, dude Wii, is the worst console of all three!

Wii is only good if you always play with friends, if you don't get a 360 or PS3, because it has much more value!

Hmm, there's not much goodness atm in next-gen for singleplayer adventure gamer. I got Zelda for GC, and Im atleast getting the new FF and God of war for PS2 before even thinking about ps3. Resistance just isn't worth this much to be and they're even converting Gears of war to PC.

are people in America that cheap to jump right along in the Sony hating bandwagon? i think they're even more mislead to embrace the Wii religiously.. just look at the Wii hype all over the net

PS3 is two times more expensive in EU than JP and still more expensive than US...
Also EU PS3 won't have hardware PS2 backward compatibility because Sony wants to trim production costs (they are saving...27$) yet the console price hasn't dropped...
Oh and Sony doesn't plan on removing the PS2 hardware in the US and JP console...complete rip-off imo.

Well, PS3 sucks and is just a wannabee PC, Wii is cool and fun (Since the games aren't like PC games) and XBOX 360 sux is just like PS3/PC too.
