If you weren't focused on making snarky comments and instead thought about it a little, you'd have realized that Quake was one of the first esports games and has been around for a very long time, so Quakers have invaluable experience to bring into a survey like that.

quake isn't an e-sport, I don't think anyone is making a living out of it and practicing +8 hours a day to compete against another hundred of players who are in the same situation as that person. This single fact creates what really makes a videogame an e-sport, actual competition; people worrying about anything but improve. How many gaming houses are there thanks to quake that you know of?

quake is just a multiplayer game atm, you can take it as competitive as you want but the company behind it is interested in creating other games, the devs of the current title are meh. Dude, even qlranks being "THE competitive feature" was community made, and you expect me not to say it's not an e-sport? if only the structure of the game was designed to become one...

Next time try to talk about quake in something that is not past tense, we all know it was great 10 years ago. if it was a snarky comment is because it has truth in it , you as a quaker, found it snarky. Quake was never what DOTA2, CS:GO, hearthstone, starcraft, etc... are now. Even if it deserved to be in the list, it isn't, one reason or another.

How is this relevant? Quake was very competitive and one of the biggest esports for years.

If after 10 years dota 2 dies and people play new, bigger games, will you say "dota 2 was never an esport, look at what's played now those are esports".

we'd say in 10 years dota2 was the game that eventually made the transition successfully, we will remember different teams and franchises that sponsored hundreds of players, we will remembering dota2 for the 8,000,000 $ prize pool international events. The one that turned people into gamers.

I think it's understandable that the OP didn't include Quake in the current "e-sports" discussion.

For one, people outside ESR already forgot about Quake's very existence. Quake entirely disappeared from the scene, so obviously people forgot about it.
The last time Quake was in the news for something major was in 2005, with Quake4's release, and for something minor was in 2011, with the ESL Finals. Those are an eternity in video games. On that note, since 2014 that Quake is only featured in one event, that has lower viewership than free music streams on Twitch, and it has less players than Shower With Your Dad Simulator.

For second, even for those that still remember Quake, it still shouldn't be compared with the games that are currently considered to be of e-sports' caliber. Even at its peak -and obviously with the current really lackluster numbers too- competitive Quake has no place in a conversation about these games.

Those pictures show what people think an e-sport is. So as you can see yourself, to people outside here Quake never was an e-sport.


On a separate note, while we already know Quake obviously is not an e-sport, is Quake even a (non-esports) competitive game? In the past eight years (the QL days) the same Q3 and Q4 players have dominated every single event, with not a single new name reaching the finals of anything (maybe semis too). BTW, all those top-standing players only play the game in the month before events, so that for them it's only a sporadic hobby and certainly not a competition.

Today I learned that something is not a (e)sport if you can't make a living out of playing it.

edit: after actually clicking on the survey, it becomes clear that the author never bothered to come up with an actual definition of the term and that a game can be dead competition wise and still make it into the list (original cs) or be (relatively) thriving and be completely ignored (the entire fighting game scene).

e-sports have scenes filled with pro players, their dedication to the game is what brings true competition, they can do it fulltime, nobody from the world of quake enjoys this status nowadays. Sad but true.

I suppose hosting or organizing tournaments / casting them / playing competitive games / trying to break into the pro scene has nothing in common between games. I suppose it's a complete coincidence that many of the same Quakers that started out with quake are successful in other games.

what sort of insight can a quake player give to organizing, hosting or casting a tournament when you have things like Dreamhack, LCS, TI, and EVO? Quakers are successful at other games. hahahaha :D

first of all redeye was a TI host, he's a UT guy

djwheat hosted LoL worlds, he's a quake guy

there's tons of quake guys behind the scenes in ESL etc

this is really irrelevant though, any kind of point how "you're either in these 4 shows/tournaments" or you're done is stupid. Tons of new things need experienced people, and there's quite a few of them in the quake scene. Tons of people change games and become successful as casters/personalities/hosts/production guys or whatever, as seen in the Korean SC scene where half the people are in LoL now

There's also the factor where Quakers have seen games come and go, and seen incompetent companies (id, epic) rise up and fall. And played/watched it for 10+ years.

So yeah, if you think that the only people relevant in esports come from the biggest several games, you probably didn't account for most of what's going on in esports

meh. I won't play the game of pointing out people. Most of them would be unknown behind the scenes guys. Fact is, there's tons of people with relevant experience. There are also many organizations popping up where people need anyone with experience.

Therefor, Quakers can be relevant in all kinds of things. If you don't realize that by now I should probably finally catch on to the fact that you're trolling and stop bothering

I actually disagree with that. Quakers have learnt the hard way that if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is (coughANGELcough) and that a game will eventually reach a point where it's just 17 dudes sitting a chatroom together, no matter how big it used to be and then all the hours you put in to be a pro will just be hours you wasted.

No quake, no survey for me.

I actually thought it was a decent survey, and some of the questions were quite self reflective. However, it was missing a bunch of options which I thought would probably be crucial. One is, Quakelive is missing and you asked us to fill this in on a Quake site (duh).

The other is the survey is geared towards younger players. I'm 32, work a full time job and support someone else (and myself!) on my salary. There is a very obvious reason why I cannot become a "Pro" at this time of my life, but there was no option to fill that in.

The first competitive fpser experience. The game that all other fps games modeled themselves after. The game that had all the original mods, including team fortress, ctf, Tdm, freezetag, instagib and an array of tactical mods (cod before cod was cod). The game that originated mouse and keyboard combo. The premier fpser that persuaded hardcore pc enthusiasts to purchase and install a video card accelerator. The only game of old that is all but forgotten and left behind in what is considered the toughest video game competition. Called esports.
