i skipped the first two because theres a 500-1000 elo difference. you won't improve if you aren't playing better players, but you also won't improve if you're playing much better players and you get shut out completely. for your skill level id try to play 1300-1400 players.

i watched the first 3 minutes of the last video and the most obvious thing is you need to work on your timing. you're constantly early for, out of position, or leave up RA/MH. try to time just MH and cycle RA/YAs and once you can do that time MH+RA and cycle YAs.

your movement/aim is fine enough to be 1600+ ELO. you just have to learn to time and then you'll be able to make better positional choices.

You're 1150 duel elo after 6 months playing quake and 536 duels. This is actually fine and better than most other people achieve after such inexperience. Don't worry about it and just practice practice practice.

you can always do what I did to improve. went from 1300 to near 1900 and to 1700 in just a matter of 2 months or so. Grind one map till youre sick of it (500+ duels). It worked for me but do expect a lot if hate and onemapper jokes:D

I watched only the third video: you could have won easily a lot of fights if you had used lg (or sometimes rl) instead of facing him with rg. You hit a lot more than him but with the wrong weapons.

with rockets follow the movement of enemy's shadow (cg_shadows 1) instead of the model. the dodges and movement patterns make much more sense that way. also i find it much easier to flick with rocket launcher. this means that in some situations you don't move your mouse until you realize where he is going to dodge next and flick the mouse there. sometimes it's smarter to just spam the weapon tho, depends on what you want to do and what's the map geometry like. and this leads to the last point for now: pay extra attention to the small geometrical details of the floor when shooting with rockets. even a small difference in height can make a big difference in the result. for example if you are taking a RL fight and he is higher than you (but you still see his ground) you'll have to be more accurate vertically.

RL is usually the weapon of choice of noobs and newbies. Because it's straightforward, very powerful and operates on simple principles.

That is what it looks like on the surface.

But any seasoned Quaker knows, that RL is a joy of joys: It will help you move, it will provide a barrier for incoming enemy, it can deliver slow-paced but sure hit at a long distance. If you train a lot with it.

Here's some tips for you:

1) Get a feel of how fast a rocket travels. This is key. Without it you won't be able to use RL proficiently. This has to be felt.
2) Having that covered, you will know and feel when and where will youre rocket hits at a particular distance.
3) With these two things in tow, you must know that RL has splash radius. Quite some splash radius of 120. This means that when engaging enemy at a close distance you don't have to be precise to inflict damage on him. But precision helps, direct hit is 100 whereas max splash is 84.
4) RL can push enemy off the ledge. This is especially important on space/lava maps/areas.
5) Remember to time your shots. Prediction is all here; the rocket will arrive on target after some time - the farther the target, the longer the time. Target moves in uneven pattern, whereas the projectile goes straight. Calculate in advance so the projectile and the target will meet.
6) Use RL's splash while firing behind corners and other parts of architecture. Even though the rocket will miss, the splash might chip the enemy or even kill him.
7) Never jump while facing RL. Jumping makes you an easy target for prediction. On the other hand, when your enemy is jumping while dodging your RL you will get very good results with it.
8) Since the prediction factor, use RL on people who are using jumppads. Most of them won't alter their movement (at least not on good/hardcore servers) by RJing while using jumppad or by other means, so you can predict where they will go and send rockets on their way.
9) Hitting extremely long range RL shots on fast-moving target is for pros. Don't bother with it unless you're so proficient with your RL that you can marry it. Long range shots against even mediocre require immense skill.
10) When engaged with RL, increase the distance as fast as you can.
11) If above is impossible, charge the enemy straight on. He might stop firing because of fear of splash and start switching to another gun or at the very least he will hurt or even kill himself while killing you. Weigh your options here.
12) RJumping is fun, but takes health/armor. Besides CA, use it with caution. Know how much can you sacrifice for that speedy RJ out of trouble.
13) Also, RJ does not necessarily mean RJ up. You can RJ the wall and start strafejumping etc to get speed. Watch DEFRAG or CPMA demos or play both these modes (at the very least PQL) to get a hold of it.
14) RJ works wonders on groups of enemies.
15) RJ on the jumppads, both vertical and angular ones. Train RJ-assisted movement as stated above.
16) You might've already guessed it, but I will reiterate: RL is as much dangerous for you as it is for your enemy. Don't get caught in the splash. Use caution in confined areas. When you're proficient you will move and fire in a way that will automatically minimize your splash exposure.

I could go on and on. RL is a staple of all Quakes and rightly so. It appears to be very simple on the surface but has marvellous and numerous appliances.

I forgot to add: Never become a llama that uses only the RL. Rocket monkeys are NOT welcome in any clan or any good server unless its a RA-type gamemode but that's another bag of potatoes. Why? Because using only one gun all the time is considered a sign of weakness and lack of knowledge. So do not let yourself tone your other gun skills down. It will hit you hard.

It seems to me that you forget that all guns in QL have their uses. (Well duh, even Big Freakin Gun lol...yeah even Q2 BFG). This is a wrong path. Learn all of them. Because RL won't win all situations for you. More often than not you will kill yourself with it this way.

I forgot to emphasize: All guns in QL have to be felt. More often than not, you will be in situations where you're exchanging shots with the enemy on a blow-to-blow basis. Now knowing the pause between shots or the speed of projectiles (in case of RL) is extremely dangerous.

Focus on one thing at a time and play a lot. There's no shortcuts to success in quake. Notice your strengths and play by them. e.g K1llsen has his rail to rely on and strenx has his shaft etc...

Like Latvities wrote earlier, don't try to learn all maps at the same time. Pick one or two maps you really like and you're good at and stick with them. For me these maps are Toxicity and Sinister. If you're more an aim based player you're probably doin good on maps like Aero and Toxi. If you're more tactical better go with Lost World or Bloodrun or something like that.

The most important thing to learn is, you have to think about your game and you have to play concentrated. If you're just running around the map you will end up 10:-1 in three min vs good players.

You have to know where you go and why you go there. Try to read your opponent and predict his moves.

Little example on Sinister:

You spawned near RA. You can pick up RA, LG, lower YA and the RL. Your opponent MH, RG, upper YA and the RL as well. What you're gonna do now?

Check the time.

Will RA spawn in a few seconds? You should take position for it.

WIll RA spawn in 10 seconds? Maybe you can set a trap at LG or you have to time to rush for the RG.

All in all you have to practice. There is no guide out there which makes you a pro level player in a few days.

About playing 1 or 2 maps, i think its good advice but for a shot ammount of time, enough to get them. Then you should start adding another one, once you get it, another, and so on. In this way you will start to think in items in abstract form not tied directly to the map. If you keep playing the same maps over and over, the contrary happens, your item awarness becomes static.

As others have put it, try to feel the weapons and not over-think when using them.

Try to time mega to the second, and armors by pick pattern or feel. Timing to the second more than one item is really hard and probably will take more share of your mind than its worth.

also practicing combat skills and raw aim separatly helps alot in that regard.

Play duel, one or two maps all day. Good choices are ztn and aerowalk (pair 1), toxicity and dm13 (pair 2).

Buy a good 120/144hz screen, top notch mouse and mousepad. Also have a good and comfortable setup in general, such as a somewhat big and steady table, dealing well with the mouse cable, etc. From your setup to a good one it should mean pretty much buying elo, more importantly enjoying the game much more.

The way to improve is not to watch streams all day, but to deliberate practice against people just above of your skill level. You gain nothing from watching Federer play, or by playing against him.

And finally, if you still want to watch matches I'd recommend strenx's lessons. From what I recall he's the only top player that gives specific tips, such as where to position yourself, routes and initial spawns, etc. However I think you shouldn't watch those before 1500 elo level, so you can understand all tips.

ql is all about practice plus stick with same mouse settings. You cant be very good with 6 months in total in ql ;)

Looking at it the other way, it's a dangerous path for newbie to start investing in equipment as means of "improvement". Shore, good hardware helps, but it only allows the skill to manifest. If you dont have skill or haven't built it, it won't magically appear with your uber mouse, uber monitor, uber kb and uber rig.

Route to 1800 Elo:

1. Learn time red and mega to millisecond. Get yellows on your way from red/mega.

2. Try not to die! Just play duels and all you try is not dying. Can be a good step to learn out of control play and not having to make crazy comebacks. Just play to conserve your stack, do damage when you can and kill opponent when you get a good opportunity. Don't ever force it.
First real lesson: ALWAYS have an idea about where your opponent is. You must never ble caught off guard.

3. Most important: whatever you do aim/movement/items is not important. Most important is positioning. Ever wondered why you get rocket in Face and die and can't get RA although you have better stack? Yes, because your opponent got the better position. Try to learn and work out what position is best regarding any item and regarding your opponents position and remember those spots. Then take them early before the item and you can easily zone out your opponent and get any item without hassle and even kills if he is stupid to go for items anyway.

4. Now learn not to be predictable / be quiet around map / try to think what your opponent will expect from you and do opposite.

5. Learn most common rail angles and rocket/nade spam spots. People use them for a a reason.

6. Try to think about what weapons your opponent has, try to deny the ones he doesn't have and take fights based upon his weapons. He doesn't have rockets? Get in close combat. He doesn't have Lg? Go for straight up medium range combat where his rockets become useless. He doesn't have rail? Go out of his shaft range etc. Beware of plasma and shotgun always.

7. Now try to learn everything as patterns. Your movement through the map, the rail angles, the spam rockets, where to be on any item, which route to take to deny yellows/weapons from your opponent between major items, where spawns are and when to spam them, repeat 1000 times on every map.

Timing is overrated.

Timing is underrated actually :P

1. Most decisions and forced fights in duel games are based on when the items are spawning.
2. The biggest mistakes in duel are always movement errors and mistiming, in that order.

Well, timing on the second is overrated as long as you know when and what is coming up. I'd say it is a bonus like hitting 40lg or having a solid rl which. Both aren't necessary but it sure helps a lot ;).
Imo it's just bad advice to tell someone at 1300 elo timing two items on the 2nd is needed. He might struggle to time even one and all he does from then on is to try to get that timing right while he forgets the essential thing. What does your opponent and how do I counter that? And sooner or later they'll give up with duel.
I've seen so many people timing multiple items on the second (at 1600 elo :P) but they were clueless about their opponents position and took bad fights because hey mh is up better rush into that lg ...

Imo most important duel skill is reading your opponent and play accordingly to both his and your strengths and weaknesses.

Just take a look at the recent quakecon result. All that timing didn't help rapha a single bit vs tox because he was missing jumppad rails and hit 20lg. Rapha didn't get outplayed he just had a very bad aim day and I bet he'd have won that duel if his aim had been on a normal level because some of the games were still quite close. Compare tox vs rapha on tox with rapha vs evil on tox. Similar game.
On the other hand tox's unhuman aim didn't help him vs evil because evil dodged like a god (that sinister dodge at ra in the end made me jizz) and hit the same. So in this case other skills like timing on the second would have been benefitial and would have allowed him to take a different approach. Yes I know tox fanboys won't like to hear that but it is the truth.

tl:dr learn how to play duel and don't waste time on one single skill you'll never master

Tox is not a good example about anything, as when he is in toxinator mode hits so much that he actually breaks the rules of the game. At the same time he's very much inconsistent nowadays, so it also breaks the rules of what is playing well and what isn't when someone of that level is hitting 9% rail.

while i think we had this conversation, and i agree with you, imo you make the timing look less important than it is.

timing is the first and last part of puzzle called duel. you need to know whats the item cycle so you can move around map and position yourself properly to make damage or steal items. now, the higher the level of gameplay your timing just needs to be more precise, as even half a second makes the difference.

prime example of it is typical cypher play on ztn, where he rushes from lg to mh, stealing it mid fight, allowing him to survive and deal damage/make kill

Cypher doesn't need to time stuff that precise vs anyone not pro. And neither should anyone else.

The increase in item timing precision is only needed when your opponent is really good.
Sure it might decide games at a pro level if you time stuff to the millisecond.... But in general you can outpossition anyone up to 2000 elo by just knowing the cycle a bit.
(edit: and the goal behind timing is to outpossition people.... so up to 2000 elo you don't really have to time accurately. Overall map awareness is much more important.)

My advice would just be play play play and try to find a mentor of sorts. Most I ever improved in Quake was when I was playing wsw literally all day with Liquid tutoring me.

e: By mentor I don't mean someone with like 200 more elo, but someone who really knows the game and is willing to play to your faults to teach you things.

If you're really worried about settings then grab cypher's cfg or some other pro, if they can be the best with it then it's good enough for you. But actually it doesn't really matter if you play with a super tweaked config or just the default one, you are pretty much going to be the same skill level. Sorry to disappoint.
