I was just curious as to why the MX518 is so unpopular with the pro circuit. For example, this is a list of current quake live pros and their mice:

These are correct as far as I know but I'd be interested in hearing any corrections.

I've been using the mx518 for a while now and it's a great mouse, I really don't need to switch but I like to try different mice and I was curious why it has fallen out of favor. Is it because of the prediction? The salmosa also has prediction afaik.

If you were going to change mice from the 518, which would you change to?

That's exactly what it is. The MS IE3.0 and this shape are the most comfortable shapes I've used. It's good the 518 is so cheap these days, I'll get one more at least before I consider anything else.

and since he started using it he started to win stuff (4 in a row). I think the only tournament he won besides those was last masters in france, with a mx518.

I never really liked the shape, my mouse progression:

Mitsumi serial > Genius Netscroll > Logitech Mouseman Wheel > Microsoft Intelliexplorer 3.0 > Microsoft Intellimouse 1.1 > Microsoft Intelliexplorer 3.0

The Mitsumi was probably my favourite mouse, when it came to shape and weight atleast, got so many good memories with it. <3

I actually used the Mitsumi a bit. A local cybercafe (T1 in 1996!!!) had them on pentium 166 machines (faster than my 75). I always wanted one but couldn't get them before the place bellied up. There's certainly something to be said for minimalist design in mice.

I also used the following version of the mouseman wheel:

I found it to be one of the most brilliant designs ever done by logitech, and despite that I did not have large hands it worked like a dream. The back of it had a slope that the palm could rest on which generated a lot of control. This was never duplicated by logitech and I have considered many times over the years going frankenmouse with it, just too lazy I guess.

Yes, that is the logitech I had. And yes, one of the best shapes ever. I have also considered frakenmousing it, as there are many guides out there to do so.

Shitty 2 Button Ball mouse > Some crappy optical one when they first came out > Logitech Mouseman Optical > Logitech MX 300 > Logitech MX310 > Logitech G1 (couldn't find the 300 anymore) > MS 3.0

I tried out the Razer Boomslang as well, but didn't bother for very long. I also switched a lot between 300 and 310 as well as between G1 and MS3.0

I used to play with the mx300; I used them for years and ran two of them into the ground before I got the 518. My hands are probably better suited for smaller mice than the 518, but it feels just fine.

I wonder what it would be like to use a smaller mouse again. I came close to trying the salmosa, but like the 518 it has prediction. If I was to change mice, it wouldn't make much sense to switch to a mouse that also has prediction imo.

large hands?.. no mouse is large enough.. most is not wide enough for normal hands.. using ime3.0, and would definitely be better if a bit wider.. still the best mouse shape i've found.. palm, but not like holding a lump like the mx5xx series from logitech.. but then again.. finger grip is awful and breeds RSI..

Personaly I rate G9 above anything else currently produced cause it is kind of flat and short mouse. I was into Dual Optical previously, but the changes made in MX500 didnt suit me, especialy the fact it became bulkier. After checking out many potential replacements I found that G9 fits my fingers and wrist style the best, but only with coarse grip. If you think about it, Wingman Gaming Mouse was flat and short, but I didnt like it back then.

yeah, that's why i still use a logitech wingman (now as a frankenmouse with deathadder 1800 dpi optics). it's very comfortable when you grip the mouse with the fingers and move your wrist, as opposed to moving your whole arm. i've tried the g9 of a friend and it's the closest to that shape, i might get a g9x with my new comp.

i switched from mx510 which i used many many years to deathadder 3.5

i havent choosed mx518 even though i LOVE the shape because of its correction and the fact i had to oc usb with some 3rd party software

i was thinkin about ie.3.0 too but again id have to oc it manually while in da its all in driver settings + mouse remembers my sets

there is also one more thing mouse 4 and 5 on mx5xx are just too small to make them useful and i need them badly

the pros like cypher re mostly kids with 10cm in biceps so they prefer smaller mouse-> thats why cypher moved back to abyssus cos deathadder was just too big for him

the perfect mouse imo would be deathadder with the shape of mamba and hardware dpi/hz switches on its bottom or just fixed on max dpi and 1000hz

I do remeber Logitech did sponsor some CS1.6 teams a fair while back. In fact, Logitech gets kinda a hard time in the CS scene as well with most people sticking with Microsoft (and nowadays steelseries and razer pops up more)

Only place I've really seen Logitech mice get lots of use is in US and UK scenes and even then it's slim

I was being sarcastic about making a list yo as there really is no such thing as 'the only pro mouse' but glad you ignored my point by expecting a long list. But when you've won 12 world titles in 5 diff games get back with me. Maybe I'll make a new mouse for you and call it NEO.

Anyhow plenty of tournies have been won without a wmo, in and outside of Q3. Just because rapha and Cooller won recently with them doesn't mean it's 100% the mouse. Cypher's aim was better than both of them in IEM4 finals even though he lost and he was using the Abyssus.

no reason to use mx518 really. wmo/ie3.0 are the absolute best gaming mouses to use and i consider every player not using them as a player which haven't reached his full potential.

altough i admit i haven't tried few of the newer mouses. still the best aimers are usually using either ime3.0/wmo so the facts speaks for themselves.

if the cable housing comes out of the actual mouse so you can see the wires, the wheel button stops working, needs super glue if you use it ingame

I think we're all forgetting the weight of the MX518, it is much heavier than the WMO/IME3 so it adds to the discomfort of it. The mouse is also too high, aiding the low sens and less movements in games such as CS more than in Quake.

i am pretty sure fox uses a WMO and Z4muz uses a 3.0, i've seen fazz use a 3.0 too but like some here said, maybe he has changed.

I'm kind of freaked out I never had a bad memory but I think I was blatantly wrong on this one.

btw is it only mine 1600dpi version or you also have such issue that moving to the right is a bit faster that to the left
i.e. you move it to the right and then back to the left the cursor wont reach the initial position at most pads like puretrak talent, ss qck, razer ones etc.
however at few pads like everglide titan(fnatic edition) or qpad CT it moves perfectly
tested at 400dpi

Well, ironically I think most of SS' early mice were actually just rebranded 1.1 and 3.0s (fancy new paint and feet etc)

That said, I used a WMO for maaaaany years and use the Xai now and think it's really quite good. Can't even go back to the WMO anymore :(

i've been using mx series mice since forever (last few mice have been mx300, mx500, mx518, etc.) but i just got a deathadder 1800 the other day and it's awesome

it's really smooth and a comfortable fit in my hand. also it has pretty lights! could be placebo but it just `feels` a lot more responsive and accurate than my mx518, but in its defence it was really old so maybe it was just going digitally senile.

still getting used to new sensitivities and such but it was a great purchase.

mx518 feels unresponsive when compared to alot of other mice forme aswell (regardless of polling rate). I think its because of the prediction, after all it has to do those calculations in the mouse before it sends them out to the computer.

i still use it though, its the only mouse with a high enough max perfect control speed that im comfortable with. the only others that have max perfect control speed as high or higher (that I know off) are mx300, mx500 and deathadder. but the da is to big for my clawgrip :(

The mx500 was my favourite mouse ever. It had some extra weight compared to the other ones and it shape is astounding compared to the rest. I like BIG HEAVY mice with my BIG HANDS. lol.
