Not too little - this is more than anyone has ever done and now that this work has been done, others are already trying to expand on this and fill in the gaps (namely the particle system, because minor stuff like events not firing will probably get fixed by some 15yo first time they try to play it)

There's never too late for this stuff. I think you're coming from an esport perspective (yes, we're on ESR, I know ;)), but let's be honest, this game has been supported way longer than any tournaments and it still works on modern systems (I think). Probably better than QL ;)

No, treat this as a single player game preservation effort. For people like me, who would maybe like to play Q4 SP after I'm finished with Q2RTX. And for this, it's the perfect time, and actually, as the best esports caster in the history put it, there's still time!

I wasn't talking about e-sports, I meant a general healthy multiplayer community, which I can't imagine because I remember Doom 3 was designed only as singleplayer game.

The Q4 singleplayer wasn't that great, but if you haven't played it yet: Don't watch any spoilers on Youtube, expect linear level design and enjoy.

As I said, no one needs OFSS Q4 multiplayer, because no one needs Q4 multiplayer (except the 170 aliases of Sanchez).

What is cool about this is that Q4 source code was never released. There are multiple D3 conservation efforts, they sometimes share code, they often die after a few months, but I bet you there's more than one active port allowing me to play Doom 3 campaign today, on my Linux system, nearly 20 years after release. And it's a good game, I don't know of a better FPS horror game, all the Resident Evils are just boring shit to me, but Doom 3, with its jump scares, got me many, many times.

Now, Quake 4 is unplayable for a decade. Yes, it's running Doom 3 engine, just like Half-Life is running Quake engine. Both are technically correct, but you can't run one in the other's engine without all the modifications that teams of programmers made over years and never published the source code.

So if someone is actually making an effort to update Doom 3 engine to run Quake 4, I'm all for it. Again: this is PRESERVATION, so we can show our grandkids the games we used to play.

Yes, emulation is another angle, but look back ~14 more years and think if anyone in 2022 is playing Doom in DOSBox. No, everyone is playing ports. You won't play Quake 4 in 2040 in a Windows XP emulator at 640x480. You will want to play a source port, and since there was no source release for Q4, you will play something this person started, or something similar.
