q3 using 99% cpu (21 comments)

even when only in the starting menu q3 is using 98-99%cpu, so ingame im geting fps dips, but if i uncap max fps, it goes around 300 and never going below 200.
tryed with cnq3 and q3.exe, different mods, erased my q3config trying with the default, reinstaled q3, scaned for spyware and all that... reinstaled all the drivers.. tryed system restore...

tryed quakeworld, and its runing smooth, using like 10%cpu

im on athlon 3000, radeon x800xl, 512 ram, xp...

before i format, anyone have an idea how to fix this?

The CPU usage is normal. I also have the issue with the fps dips, though, and my computer is similar. :| It wasn't always like this, though.

For reference, I have an nvidia 7900GS and twice the ram.

well i dont belive the cpu usage is normal, im not sure, but i think i remember q3 using much less cpu, and all other games never go as high, when q3 is at 99% when in the starting menu doing nothing...

its normal. it will max out whatever core it is running on - so if you have a single core it will be ~100, and for dual core will be ~50 etc.

it's not actually doing anything between frames except waiting for the next frame to begin, but the process doesnt sleep, it keeps hammering the cpu.

using that exe my cpu goes from 50% to 1% on my dual core.

tryed it but its still at 100% and causing fps dips, so i guess formating is the only thing left

if you use that exe, you have to set com_yieldcpu 1. did you do that?

very unlikely. i doubt laptops have millisecond speedstep times.

what it COULD conceivably do, albeit to a very small extent, is help with HEAT, so on reflection I may consider it after all.

hrm - seems this isn't true, tho it certainly USED to be.
CNQ3 uses about 38-40% CPU on my box, and that's with a 200fps PMX client and a 25fps PMX server both running.

interesting, i get 50% utilisation by the client at any framerate, and approx 0% by the server, using pmx/cnq3 and dual core of course.

Yeah - I KNOW I used to, as recently as a month or two ago. Seems something's changed in 1.43, but I have no idea what. Am trying to track it down now. :)

aha!
a LISTEN server uses 50%.
a client with a REAL server, even if running on the same machine, uses about 40% for the client and basically nothing for the server.

the "real" setup actually sleeps in the server thread, but listens just constantly spin there.
