whats it do exactly?

The thing is that Q4 uploads too much data for a 64Kbits connection to handle, then the games lags and gets unplayable.

This program justs drops packets as to let the data flow correctly thru the slow connection and don't get lagged. Strangly as is may sound the gameplay doesn't get (noticibly) affected by the packet loose.

Not so strange, 30 packets per second is more than enough for interactive traffic. Its one update each 0.033 seconds and thanks to net_clientUserCmdBackup interpolated with info from a 0.016 earlier [dropped] "never seen directly by he server" packet.

Nice one ill check it out. Anytime i want to play q4 ive to go 128k so i generally just play league games only.

Please explain in your starting text what that tool actually do.

Is this program allowed? No kind of "cheat" or so since it's in a way altering what happens with the game?

The tool allow people with slow connections [that worked perfectly with Q3] playing Q4 online, i wouldnt say its cheat.

About the "complicated nature" of it, tell me exactly what was so hard and we will try to improve it.

Copy the net.cfg file from to the q4base or mod (example q4max) dir.
Do start -> run -> cmd [Enter]
Cd to the folder where the app resides, example "cd c:\pd" [Enter]
Exec "packagedropper -s serverip:serverport -r 0.5" [Enter]
Do ctrl-alt-supr to load the task manager, select the process tab,
right click in packagedropper and raise the priority to real time.
Load Quake4 and in the console do "connect localhost" [Enter]
Once in the server, in the console do "exec net"
Wait from 10 seconds to 1 minutr for the lag to finish.

That is not something I will manage without screwing up at a number of points :D Also nothing I (anyone?) wanna do every time I wanna play Q4... If it was just a .exe to start before starting Q4 - great :)

Ok, here we go.
First and foremost, working or not, its a "i dont have another way to do it" hack, ask raven not to forget loyal quake players including a Q3'ish cl_maxpackets clone in next Q4 patch if you want that level of easiness.

Now, maybe it would be good to include a shortcut where one just have to change the server IP or port and not going cmd. The net.cfg is only copied the first time, then it just should be executed when playing, maybe putting it in autoexec. The priority setting is something i dont know how to script or automate, suggestions are welcome.

Well I think I just said how I found it; bit too complicated for normal newbies and tad annoying to do much of it every time you want to play... Can definately not come with anything constructive, sorry :( Shortcut with them commands would be nice I guess, all work already done is usually welcome and for the priority stuff, maybe someone can help if it's possible (which I guess it should)? Ask on forums or whatever, again I don't know :[

Though: Well done to get what you got, I can survive without it but it'd be fun to test and obviously it's great for some people (the ones it's really intended for), as the chance of Raven making all our wishes come true in any patch is slim, gently put.

It is not so complicated if you have been around for a while and are used to command line programs, however it shouldnt be too hard to make a graphical version where you just fill in path to your q4.exe and hit start...

That sounds great gstructor - there are a lot of guys in Ireland who play on 64k ISDN (myself included) who get disconnected from connect being flooded. I will test this out, thanks.

Tried it out there on my 64k - windows 2000 sp4 (no firewall).

Here are the results from the command prompt:
packetsFromClient: 47828
packetsToClient: 10667
packetsFromServer: 10667
packetsToServer: 31885
packetsToServerDropped: 15942

I have no idea what this says about my connection, could you explain? 15942 packets dropped out of 31885 sounds like a lot, although it didn't feel like I was suffering from packet loss on the server (although I was only spamming rockets on Phrantic).

Whats a lot and what not? Think of it as the difference between playing Q3 with cl_maxpackets 100 lagged vs cl_maxpackets 50 without lag, what would you choose? Oh wait, there's no way to choose that in Q4! Till now :)

The tool simulates packet loss, something that any game network code is able to overcome. And it does it in an "ordered" way. I mean, it dont drop 30 packets and then it sends 30 but it (at default settings) send one, drop one, send one, drop one. And the best part is that the info from dropped packets arrives to the server in the next "not dropped" one as backup info, so the server can interpolate it and no user command is lost. As you said, theres nearly no difference in the gaming experience.

Ya thats huge, will be a lot of help for those of us who suffer from this 999 upon connecting. I used to get this 999 all the time on my old TA, and was unable to play. This tool would have been a massive help to me under those circumstances.

When I switched to a new TA (without connecting through a shared internet connection), I only get this 999 upon connecting 1 in 5 times, and it is often fixed by a reconnect, or a vid_Restart, so its harder for me to judge how the tool is affecting the performance of my internet connection.

I will use it though, thanks again - but it would help if it was more user friendly. I followed the instructions, and maybe I'm doing it wrong, but when I start the utility, I run it with 1 internet server in mind. So if somebody on the server says "lets go here instead" - I have to quit q4, restart the utility, launch q4 again, and connect to localhost. Its a long way from qizmo's ,connect. Also, when the map ended on the game that I played, my localhost shut down, and I was kicked from the internet server as a result.

But im not as crazy as you think, i ended the day and started 2006 with my wife, daughter and the big familily i luckily have, Im coming back to home at 04:24 local time and the second thing im doing (you dont want to know the first) is checking this thread.

There are lots of people outside of Germany who do not have the capacity to get a connection that has greater than 64k upload, myself included. If you were in the same situation then you would know that this doesn't suck.

well maybe you're right.. but on the other hand, people who have good cons and use this will have an advantage over people with equal good cons without this program.

Well to be honest you can't compare it like that, Quake 4 ain't Quake 3. But I agree that I don't think this mod or whatever it is, could really harm anyone. If it let's people with slow connections enjoy the game, well... super, aslong as it doesn't destory the fun (choppy moving models etc.)

Anyway let's hope id & Raven will fix this in a propper way for the ISDNers out there, or maybe they don't care, what would be a shame.

I am assuming if you will use q4max you need to load q4max q4 to do that? Once you have done it once do you need to do it everytime you want to play? Do you need to open the program everytime? I really want to try this but am waiting on a reply. Also if more people have tried this, how is it?

Yes you need to open the program every time you want to connect. You can connect from q4base or q4max, the game will automaticaly switch mods. Juse remember that image_useprecompressedtextures 0 is your friend.

exec packagedropper -s serverip:serverport -r .5
'exec' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

If you read again the readme says
exec "packagedropper -s ..."
That means, execute the commands inside the quotes, so no "exec" needed at all. Replace serverip with the IP of the server and serverport with the port (default is 28004) of the server. You can read this info in ASE for example.

it should be packetdropper in the readme, not package.

i'm new to q4 and i just hate that i always have to predict my machineguns-rails-shotguns etc..nevertheless i can't find a server with a descent ping so i'm just asking..

In quake4 1.4beta patch something incredible happened, a cvar for controlling the ratio of sent packets/server tickrate appeared, net_clientusercmdpacking. Said cvar when set at 2 while playing at a default 62fps server causes you to do something similar to what this tool does, but better, much better. So let it die in peace.
