rofl, isn't the demo supposed to come out before the game hits store shelves? I mean, seeing as how it helps others beta test, builds anticipation for the game, and gets some who might not have considered the game to either consider it or possibly buy the full version.

That was old days, today they only sell new games via the "hype", not quality.
So when everyone found out the game itself sucks they can download the demo

You need far more than a month lead time in order to adequately use external beta testing. At least 2 weeks is required after going gold to be on store shelves. I don't recall exactly how long of a lead time q3test had over quake3 retail, but I'd be willing to bet it was 3 months or more.

Often, demos are not released ahead of the product because it would delay the release of the full product which in the case of holiday timing is not something a publisher is going to support - ever.

And if the publishers do decide that the devs need to release a demo it is often based on an early beta build, and people will bitch and moan about how awful/bad/lame/sucky the game is and that they won't buy it ever and wa wa wa wa wa,see Age of Empires 3 and Serious Sam 2 for example.

Doesn't matter how you do it, people will whine.

Yeah, it would need longer than a month, I just posted off the top of my head and didn't bother thinking of an accurate timescale :¬)

The version is entitled "Quake 4 Demo Final v1.0.0"
So it must be based on the last exe (which is 1.04n 2147 I believe) with modified things for the Demo (cd-key checking..).

First the late pre-release interview, now the late pre-release game... what will they release next? A Q3 1.32 demo to show how good the patches were?

Lets be honest here. Raven did not relase the game as a demo because they knew it would have gotten slated becasue it's

a) overly demanding on the CPU/GPU

b) it's actually not that good once you invest a few hours in it, but I believe it will be made goo so who cares.

If I was one of those who spent 1000's upgrading on a new pc for q4 I would be as xfoo says very bitter:)
Especially when they pull stuff like locking the r_lightdetaillevel cvars and then making out that the game gets too dark with it used, forgetting that R_gamma can be used to compensate for that.
