okay, it seems that the server is going to run and i start the game but when i want to connect on my serverip quake says "no map running"? wtf?!

but when i want to run the dedicated he tells me that the comments in there are unknown. once the loading is ready i can execute the cfg without errors :p

when a server uses the same cd key as my client, can i still play there?

i have a dedicated linux box with a sempron 2600 on a 100mbit line and want to host a server or two, anyone knows which files to upload so i dont need to upload all of the 3Gigs ?

you dont have to enter your cdkey when you want to run a dedicated server :P

no, you can't as you need a key to play single player, as well.
The reason why poeple don't do it, is because the game content (that is inside the pk4 files) is not available under a public license and is id porprietary.
Another reason ist, that such a package would be very large, as the pak files are the whole game, almost ;-)

atm i have to start the server manually by typing the command. But on closing the ssh connection it kills the server soo what can i do that the server stays? :>

Run the server in a screen. If you are using Debian try apt-get install screen. Then type "screen" and a new virtual console will start. Start the server and press CTRL+A+D now u can close the ssh connection and the server will still run. When you want to make changes to the server you just need to bring up the virtual console again by typing "screen -r"

Tried both g_voteFlags 8 and g_voteFlags 3. (To disable game type voting.) It did not work. What have I done wrong?

I didn't try it, but the g_voteFlags value should be like this:

if disable change map only, the value is 32
disable change map + kick player, the value is 32 + 16 = 48

So g_voteflags 8 should disable game type voting. It doesn't.

Don't think you've done anything wrong. Been playing around with server configs this weekend, and it doesn't work here either no matter how I use it :/

g_password for the actual setting of the password, but you also have to set si_usePass to 1 in order for it to actually be used.

I'm trying to start two server sessions on my box but I can't seem to get it to work. I'm using this commandline:

screen -A -m -d -S q4ffa1 ./quake4-dedicated +set net_port 28004 +exec dm1.cfg

screen -A -m -d -S q4ffa2 ./quake4-dedicated +set net_port 28005 +exec dm2.cfg

Problem is that if I start one of them, the otherone is killed and I have no idea why. That commandline works with Q2 and Q3 servers.

Anyone got any other suggestions on how to start several servers on different ports?

Maybe you should only run one server per user or something :/

I've had two servers up without any problems. Start one dedicated server and then start another one by clicking q4ded.exe again. The new one should take the next port by default.

you must set 2 cvars for server logging and server homefiles:

For example: user q4 launches 2 DM servers:

1st:
+set fs_devpath "/home/q4/.quake4-dm1"
+set fs_savepath "/home/q4/.quake4-dm1"

2nd
+set fs_devpath "/home/q4/.quake4-dm2"
+set fs_savepath "/home/q4/.quake4-dm2"

You can run more than one per user (I'm running 3 atm on different ports, same IP), it is worth putting in different installs (can link the pak files) and then use +fs_basepath xxx +fs_savepath as well to make sure you don't have logs trying to overwrite each other and stuff like that.

Could you explain how you actually do this? If you want to host five servers on same IP, do you install it in five different locations? What's your commandline?

What I personally do is create a folder like /game/quake4 which has all the core files and structure and q4base in that will have all the big pak files (saves multiple copies later).

Then I create a folder for each account like /home/q4server1 then I simply do an lndir /games/quake4 /home/q4server/quake4 which mirrors but linked all the files. I just then unlink the startfile (with the port set in it) and config and then run it, copy/edit the original so it fs_basepath/savepath point to q4server2 for logs etc. You probably want to create indidual copies for pb as well as you typically don't want 4 servers trying to update pb and overwriting each others files at the same time.

Repeat for q4server2 ad infinitum.

(I think some dists don't have lndir (links everything recursively), but you can download it or use ln -s if necessary just I find lndir fast).

So basically you end up with a skeleton folder with your configs and logs and punkbuster, and then links to the games folder with all the larger files. Saves a lot of space only having one copy of all the paks etc, and you can have separate logfiles etc.

Hope that makes sense, if not just shout.

Edit: Even simpler actually would be simply to use the same fs_basepath pointing to base files in a sep dir and change the fs_savepath, just I haven't tested it (ie might be bugs or other issues I haven't thought of).

Isn't it possible to do with screen alone?
In cool.hot.ee we use following scheme in q3: One q3 user, put q4 in that users homedir and create different startupscripts within q4 folder. One script for every server you want to run. Inside startupscript you need do define different ports and stuff like that. then just run screen and open different console inside screen for every server and run it. We have even a file for screen running, that automatically starts screen, creats different console for each server, renames the console and starts servers. So starting all the servers is just one line ("screen -c serverstartupfile" ) to the console. It's really easy and works well in q3 I haven't looked how we have done q4 servers but i see no reason why q4 wouldnt be possible to run multiple servers under one user just like that.
I'ts really good way, i mean if you want to run three 1on1 servers, then every server can use the same cfg, every server will use the same installment, and when you need to upgrade your servers, then you have to upgrade only once and it applys to all servers.

I have a pub right now, and I want to use it for private games like scrims and such. Plus I ordered it from Art of War Central so I can edit the server config remotly.

My question is how do I password protect it? i've used seta g_password "puggers" or what the command is, I cant remember what the command name is off the top of my head but I changed the variable to "puggers" so it would set the PW as puggers, well it didn't, I tried using my rcon to do it and it said command excepted or whatever it says and it doesnt apply the password.

I would really like to get this resolved quickly, ended up having about 4 or 5 people join a tryout game to recuirt some more people into my clan... was rather annoying having to login to rcon and kick them.

With the dedicated linux server did anyone have the problem that sometimes after a map change it doesn't load the next map.. hanging the server? When trying to connect again it says 'no map running'.

chk the logs and see what error it gives u...mayb u have a map names wrong in the map cycle orso

If you have config file ,for example dm.cfg, you can type "exec dm.cfg" in quake4 console or
"#quake4-dedicated +exec dm.cfg "

and check map cycle file.

If you don't have config file, you must make config file.
but, quake4(Unix) has dm.cfg, ctf.cfg ....etc

Thanks for tips, but I'm using the standard q4 cfgs with correct maps. I changed running from console to screen, that seem to have fixed it somehow.

I am running a Tourney server on Windows 2003, the server works fine, but it won't show up in the in-game browser.
only way to connect to it is to manualy type in the IP.

Someone said to me to open the port (28004) in the Firewall, but when I started the remote access serivce, I was asked to turn of the windows firewall.
Do I add this port to somewhere else? Or what should I do?

Does it have a dedicated nic for internet? Or does it have 1 nic for inet and lan? Only with a dedicated nic windows server can use a firewall. If it's a shared nic, make sure the port is open in the router. Map udp traffic from "all outside IP's on port 28004" to "serverip:28004"

But you can connect from the outside to the server ip and join the q4 server? If that's the case, the port is already open. I don't know which port Q4 uses to sent a signal to the master server. If the master server has to sent a response, a port also has to be opened for the response to be received.

I was asked to turn of the windows firewall.

The RAS wizard opens up the ports you say it to open, for example smtp and http. It doesn't turn of the firewall. btw have you got ISA installed?

Some information for firewall configurations to play nice with quake4:
all game traffic is UDP
by default servers listen on port 28004 ( if you run several servers on the same machines, it will use 28004, 28005 etc. )
your server needs to be able to talk to the master server at q4master.idsoftware.com on port 27950

A few people have posted "tweaked" configs with their guid still in there (spotted this as had the same problem today). Do a search for any vars with guid in your configs and delete those lines (assuming its not your normal one and a custom config from someone else)

In my experience, deleting the com_guid"" line does not fix it.
Not only Q4 is dumb enough not to check that your guid matches your key in the first place (and overwriting it if necessary), but it also won't overwrite it without throwing the entire quake4config.cfg away if you delete the line, it'll just create a blank entry :/

How do I turn off mapcycling?

remove the map names from between the " mayb
si_mapCycle "" so its blank [/guess]

leave g_mapcycle with blank,
si_mapcycle should be like this: si_mapcycle "mp/q4dm11v1;mp/q4dm7;mp/q4dm8"
that means the map will be cycled with that sequence

As far as I understand it. To allow a game with 8 players but 4 additional specs you need:

si_numplayers 12
si_maxplayers 8
si_minplayers 1

This seems to work for us.

I still can´t the "max_teamplayers" to work. Using

and also tried the opposite. Gah, it really destroys the tdmpickup when u either can have 8 maximum clients or 12 clients and ppl joining the team when joining the server. Any solutions??? Pls!

Got a question for you q4-linux admins out there. How much resources does your q4 servers take?

When I start a q4 server it spawns a bunch of processes. I started a q3 and compared the output of: ps aux

That's how mine looks. Not sure why it needs 4 processes, but yup - I wondered the same thing.

As far as cpu usage, it's a pig. My server has an amd 2400+ .. not awesome by any stretch, but based on experience with q2 and q3 servers, I thought I'd at least be able to get 2 or 3 instances going on it without any problem. However, one full 16 player server kicks my load average up around 2.0. From the client side, it's very smooth - but so much for running multiple instances -- on my single mid-grade proc, anyway.

Also, you may want to renice -15 it, just so things like updatedb don't have too much of a negative impact.

My server is only a P4 2.0 ghz / 768 mb ram. I've been trying to figure out what q4 need the most, mem or cpu.

Seems like q4servers need quite a lot of memory. Each new server I start up uses around 130 mb memory. It doesn't expand or shrink that size much, so an empty 0/3 duel server still takes up as much memory as a full 10/10 ffa dm.

Cpu usuage is also pretty high but I think it's the lack of memory that makes my servers start lagging, when I have too many of them up. At the moment I have four sessions up and it might too much for the server.

my server is a sempron 2,6ghz with only 512mb and i have a 4 player server running...even in idle it takes up about 20% of the RAM, so thats about 100Megs, dunno if this changes for more players though.

I will set up another 8 Player Server which is not passwort protected to test make some load testing

I don't notice it eating much more memory when its full than when it's empty. So memory-wise, you're probably fine running 4 instances. But CPU wise you might be in trouble if they're all full (depending on how many slots per). One full 16 player server totally pegs my 2400+ CPU-wise, with lots of memory to spare.

And i can still voting all the modes... i tryed to change the value of voteflags but isnt matter, still dont working...

I was under the impression that setting

si_allowVoting "0"

in your configfile would disable all voting. If you at one time want to allow one or more voteoptions they are enabled by adding the bitwise value to g_voteFlags, and setting g_voteFlags to "0" would be switching them all off (as in no voting allowed).


That would mean that
si_allowVoting "0" // global "allow votes" 1=on, 0=off

and

g_voteFlags "0" // set all flags to 0 (=off)


should give the same result.

Values to add to g_voteFlags are (as i read somewhere):

// bit 0 (+1) restart now
// bit 1 (+2) time limit
// bit 2 (+4) frag limit
// bit 3 (+8) game type
// bit 4 (+16) kick player
// bit 5 (+32) change map
// bit 6 (+64) spectators

Has anyone managed to get this to work yet? Trying to work out if there's a bug in it, or just something wrong (tried different webservers, renaming file, making sure proper path is in, it pops up a window on the client to confirm if you want to download, but then just fails with an unknown string error).

This seems to be for doom3, serverDlBaseURL and serverDlTable do not exist in q4? Anyone know the q4 vars for allowing downloads?

Oddly enough it seems to do "something", just not work for the client (says download failed or was cancelled, but is ok when direct from the the web server including mod/base path).

have a feeling this aspect could get messy for custom content and servers.

Look Ive got some big problem and I have no idea how can i cape with this ! I bought quake 4 yesterday and I installed it. During playing in multiplayer there are some red lines in console . For instance there is written : Clip model outside worlds bounds for entity" or "Loading non pre-cached file" . Becouse of it my game stucks and music too. I cannt play with this :) Would anybody be so kind and help me ???!

I get those messages too, both on my client and server, and both work fine. I'm thinking that those messages are common, and maybe you're experiencing a problem that has nothing to do with those messages. As far as what your problem actually is, I know there's a ton of questions about quake hanging posted around on various boards.. Video drivers, and other programs (can't remember what the bad ones are .. ) running when starting quake seem to be the biggest culprits.

Constant spammage of "Hitch (xx msec)" where xx=random number. How do I disable that crap from spamming the console?

Hitches are where the server can't keep up and doesn't have time to process the data. You will likely get one at the start of the server. If you are getting them all the time you most likely have a serious problem with your box and performance of the server. Rather than disable the errors, try and fix the cause of the errors, i.e its lacking some resource somewhere to run it correctly.

Console Logging:

I'm trying to enable any sort of logging. So far I've researched/tried:
set logfile = 1
g_log = 1

I noticed that if I try to change g_log to 1 it says you can't do that during a multiplayer game.

I've added those variables to the .cfg upon startup and also tried on the commandline as +

The final outcome is always g_log = 0 even though I try to set it. If I rem out the spawnserver command, g_log = 1, but as soon as spawnserver is executed, g_log = 0.

If you can edit the startup line, then it would be possible, if you don't have access to edit that file then there isn't a way.

For anyone interested I just recently recoded an old Quake 3 server bash script to work for a linux Quake 4 Dedicated server, It can start, stop, give some status, print some debug info and so on, Server configs and a README file has been included in the archive.

Usage:
Start a q4 ctf server...
./q4server start ctf

Start a q4 tdm server with osp :p

./q4server start teamdm osp

an so on. enjoy!

I tried your script to start server, the thing is that once i started the server it felt just unreacheable for players... It is not listed anywhere anymore... the weird stuff is that the the pb webtool seems to be working. So do you have any idea what i should do to use your script and to still be able to connect ot our servers?

Trying to learn to admin a Q4 server on a Win2k3 ded box.

Have the game running on my desktop in my server would like to make it a a service.

Have lots of experience admining UT2K4 but notta for Quake. I use game panel to control all my servers that I have runnnig plus TS2 servers. I see alot of info for linux but not alot for win2k3. Can someone point me in the right direction so as to get this going in game panel if possible via a coammand line(argument).

This is my command line now that I have treid to use before adding my info to it :

X:\<gamedirectory>\quake4ded.exe +set net_ip xx.xx.xx.xx +set net_port xxxxx +set si_maxPlayers xx +exec <yourconfigname>.cfg +spawnServer

I coppied one of the .cfg files at the start of this thread and renamed it taoconfig.cfg and have called it in the command line above, copy of the file used is:

Can never seem to get this working in game panel, would imagine it is user error on settng this up as am a complete noob to adminning a q4 server..Have'nt erased any other files on my server in the q4 directory.

Bascially need some help to get this puppy up and running and how to maintain it via what file compared to an INI in ut2k4 if this is possible would be great..

Anyone solved the dl directly from the q4 server yet? Can't make it happen.... Clients only get disconnected. NEED THAT TO WORK NOW!!! :)

it doesnt work and ye ur right needs to b fixed asap.... clients have to have the same files as the server or they get "missing files"

You can get it to redirect to a page (i.e outside of the game) so at least people know where the files are, but then they need to reconnect once they've downloaded/installed them.

tried that too and it doesnt show anything apart from "missing files"

Should work for a redirect for instagib for example (i.e it will take you to the page, it won't autodownload it).

The dir has to be configured in apache to be listable.

No at the moment it's either all on or all off.

I can't get battle mod to work ? when I start with +fs_game battle in the console I see a message telling me fs_game is writeproteced ?

How can I setup my dedicated server to use battle mod ?

Have u changed your cfg to allow server mods? The battle mod will put a copy of the cfg in the batte dir at startup, so if u have q4 as a separate user, the user must be allowed to write in that directory.

Also to add to that, make sure your +set fs_game comes before execing your server.cfg file or similar.

How can I make the qconsole.log log chats and conversations on the server? A qconsole.log is generated by my server, but no chats are included: just connection errors, etc. Thanks in advance.

i as well have the problem not showing up in the gamebrowser.

i have forwarded the ports (28004 and 27650) as i should and what is really wierd, it DID work, bur only one time :(

if i start the server (not dedicated) i get some responce from the pb server but not from the master server (should i?)

when doing a search on my name i can see it scans my server and it shows my outside ip and says it found one q4 server but it doesn't show up, unlike in the lan part, there it is.

i also found it showed a strange port, i.e. 56611 so i thought i'd forward that as well, same result.

no i have red somewhere that it could be down to a flaky router, (need to update software, there ain't unfortenatly) i just don't see why or how and especialy the fact that it did work once i can't understand?

hope someone can shed a light on this, i know for sure i'm not the only one but an answer to this problem seems to be found nowhere...

specs; winxp sp2, modem speedtough 510 and wireless router is a medion (cheap, works great tho, exept now? :) )

Make a .cfg file with all your standard server settings in (defaultserver.cfg for example) . Then if you want to set your server back to it's default state type
rcon exec defaultserver.cfg
rcon servermaprestart

Will reset the settings to quick you originally set the server up as.

You sure servermaprestart will set like si_name? (hostname), maxplayers etc?

what about new maps? if i upload new maps to server and want it to be active ?

Servermaprestart should change the host name ,i've only rconed on q4 not hosted a server yet, i'm going from what I know from Doom 3.
If you add new maps I think you may have to restart the server totally. You running a dedicated with a company?

Okey - Yeah i do run dedicated servers with a company. Iam currently programming a webinterface for controle of each q4 server. It just suck if i have to kill the server each time i want to upload new maps. It would be alot more easier just to send an rcon command and thats it!

Just give it a try, upload your new map then do a servermaprestart if it works it works heh. Keep me posted though good stuff to know and also keep me posted bout your web interface seems interesting and could be a good future tool I would def be interested in using :)

Its not a big problem to kill it and then start it again though, just only thing is that it will take a lot of serverpower and it takes like 10-20 second to start the server.

All you need to do to change the name is exec the cfg file which you ca do via rcon.

I just checked now rcon through ASE to my ded server in germany. It works fine to change the si_name and a servermaprestart changes the name straightaway. I'm not sure what you're doing wrong but it just worked for me.
I don't have rights to upload custom maps to the server at the mo so I can't test that but theres no reason why it wouldn't work.

I dint send the si_name command to the server, i just changed it in the config.. maybe thats why?

If you changed it in server config u need to re exec the config using rcon
rcon exec server.cfg
After you make any changes.

Okey but when i do exec 1v1_28003.cfg (tryed without .cfg) rcon tells me:

exec <filename> : execute a script file

When I give it a dir, it gives me:

exec q4max/1v1_28003.cfg
^3WARNING: ^1Loading non pre-cached file q4max/1v1_28003.cfg
couldn't exec q4max/1v1_28003.cfg

if the server is already running q4 max then you shouldn't need to specify the dir.
you just need to make sure you have .cfg on the end.
maybe it's the _ in the file name that is messing with it?
Are you doing "rcon exec 1v1_28003.cfg" ?
Even if you are in your own server you will need to add the rcon cmd or it will attempt to locate the .cfg i your own q4 folders.

Ye Q4 doesn't like _ . In demos at least, also you need to exec the server.cfg that is in the mod dir.

in map cycle, what should i type in for all the custom maps bein' played at the cpl winter?
+ for somehow i cant find my server published on any game browser, i use default cfg's, dm \ ctf \ some if find on inet etc, but somehow it just doesnt apear on www.game-monitor.com
anyone knows why this might happen? I need some port open?

when i spawn a listenserver with DM settings on mp/q4dm9 map (the pro-q3dm6 map modified for q4) the map has quad damage. However, when i create a dedicated server with (same map -> mp/q4dm9 )

si_mode "DM" and
si_Gametype "DM"

megahealth is spawned instead of quad damage.

Any kind of help muchly appreciated, thanks in advance.

It's probably something wrong in one of the def files, they are designed to change item placements for different mods. It could be a bug, not 100% sure but it wouldn't surprise me. Someone will no doubt be able to change it, although dm6 is overplayed and shouldn't even be allowed in q4.

I'm a long time Quake * server admin, but am having problems with getting a Quake 4 server up and running on WinXP Pro - specifically the map rotation. I'm currently using si_map to set the starting map and si_mapCycle to specify the map values (e.g "mp/q4dm1;mp/q4dm2"). However the server crashes when time limit is reached and it's time to move on to the next map.

This is the case on two servers (both running XP). I've also tried using the g_mapCycle CVAR (value = mapcycle.scriptcfg) and the same problem occurs.

Your help and suggestions would be appreciated.

ok I just got my Q4 server up and running. and everything seemd fine till i tryed to change the map in the remote admin console in game. i got an error saying there was an overflow and the alowOverflow was not set and the server exits out. anyone know what i can do to fix this? i am running it on Fedora Core 4 linux 64 bit.
