Depends what "out" means, unreal engine two also looks as good if not better than D3 on full settings, but they are hard to compare because of the way they've been applied (D3 mainly indoor, UT2K* mainly outdoor) The engine is finished as far as i know, but obviously it only gets shown to the public when a game is on it. They need the engine before they develop the game, so engines are about 2 years ahead of the game they release it on (at least thats my understanding)

You could say the same about the Doom 3 engine though surely, since they are both used to make games. Therefore the release date of the game ought to be significant to how old the engine is, the offset applies to both games.

No, sorry there, the U2 engine is not better than the Doom3 engine, the textures it can handle, the features it can handle, the physics engine and the light effects it supports noone in their right mind (sorry) can say the U2 engine is better and there is a reason, the Doom3 engine was released later and during development could take advantage of newer features.

Compared to what? The doom3 engine is old(er) and looking at future engines yes it looks dim, it would look even worse if someone (again someone out of their mind) tried to released Q4 using the U2 engine.

The u3 engine wont be as impressive in 2 years time (then it will have been out for what? one and a half year?)

No, what you are mistaking is a map/textures being more colorful which seems to get people to go all "ooohhh ahhh", now that is fine that is your prefrence. Judging maps/textures is one thing, judging an engine is another.

well, thats the map, the engine is capable of more than just dim and stuff. If you are impressed with the U2 engine and not with the D3 engine I dont know what criterias you are after, maybe the epic logo?

congratulations, a slight difference in time regarding the development of d3 and ut3 wouldnt you say? Think about the available hardware during development, it is nothing short of terribly stupid to compare engines that have such a substantial amount of time between them.


Yes, I have read your argument that the engine is "ready" but then again the Doom3 engine basically looked the same back in 2003 (alpha that leaked) so that is a good 2 years difference at the very least also, as hinted above, UT3 can use features that were not available just a year ago!

Behind in development? You dont have to release a new engine everytime someone else does, very impractical if not near impossible.

A new engine that is meant to be cutting edge has probably a minimum of 1 years development (just the engine, no content) and for it to truly be cutting edge it has to be made during a shift of technology opengl/DirectX/new graphicschips and all that it entails, also when you have a new engine you want to make the best out of it. You can tweak an engine, Epic did that for UT2k4. Much cheaper no?

So in several ways it would be stupid for ID software to right off the bat start developing a new engine to just beat Epic.

People who licensed the Q3 engine did that, tweaked it, much cheaper and you still had a good engine that you could work with.

Development works in cycles, obviously Epic and ID software dont have the same cycle so they are going to release games in different strokes so they are going to take turns in pushing the envelope and I personally feel ID software do it much more when its their turn.

I remember people actually replacing things like the water splash sound at rail, q2dm1. Someone actually used "IN THE WATEEERR!" or something like that. I don't think you could play with these replaced sounds on most servers but i got the "honor" to see one of these infamous .pak s on one of the ancient lans at a net cafe

I really want to know how the Multiplayer Dynamic is for Q4, I am curious how viable Air Rockets/Nades are. It all looks good to me so far, but I see a lot of potential for a watering down of my previous quake experience. I am cautious, yet optimistic that it will hold my attention for "extended periods of time".

Besides, if it's not good, then I have nothing to look forward to and I'll fall asleep in class.

Looks like Willits made "Over the Edge" as using his magical powers of item placement and map balance he has managed to put the railgun and rocketluancher (At least it looks like it and fits the original item placement) in the same area with a handy bouncepad allowing easy access to both.

apparently quake4 runs abit quicker then doom3 :o

also the multiplayer feels like quake3 according to rhyno, the guy in some of those screenshots.. he just needs some servers to get running :P

The tourney maps look actually very promising to me. As far as one can tell from pictures, at least they are not the doom3 type of maps, where too much detail was put in. To me they look like they could prove as real tournament maps. What do you think?

From the moment a game has gone gold, warez groups may get their hands on it. It's totally nonrelevant if the game is available in stores for the regular customer.

Yeah.. As I said, if they can get their hands on it. Usually it is either advance copies of the game getting sent out to reviewers or people who work at game stores like EBgames who rip the games. Well, there hasn't been many pre release reviews of Q4 at all which would indicate that they haven't sent out many advance copies. The fact that not more people have it already would also indicate that stores will get the game today or tonight which is really late.

As I said GG Activision for not letting it get leaked early.

Games most often get leaked from the duplication facility, the reason Q4 is not in the warez scene is because it's protected by Safedisc 4.6.
It will probably not be cracked yet for a while, probably only released as a clone.

Yeh ,but i guess playing at 60hz/60fps won't be as nice as 85hz/85fps.
I'd say 85 would have been good ,as most machines won't make 125 fps anyway and many monitors don't support 125 hz.

Try com_maxfps 60 in q3 you don't get 60 frames you get 62 probably due to the way the engine rounds frames. I can't believe anyone would suggest that a screenshot of SIXTY TWO frames per second means that q4 isn't locked at 60.

Yup, the fps are always an exact factor of 1000 (from ms in a sec), so in this case it will be running at 62.5fps (1000/16)

The game is NOT capped at 60 FPS if the screenshots at Dailyrush are anything to go by.

The Danish reviwer also stated

"3 Ghz P4, Geforce 6800 GT (his specs). The game runs flawlessly at 1280x1024 (high details). I haven't tried other resolutions yet, but I can probably go 1600x1200 without any problems at all."

well it seems that q4 can only show numbers that are a fraction of 1000 when you divide it by n=1,2,3,... like it was in q3. thats why in q3 the value was 1000/8 = 125 and in q4 it seems to be 1000/16 = 62,5. thats the reason why you will see many screenshots with 62/63 fps I think.

Also, a note from the Danish reviewer (translated):

First it must be mentioned that IGN made a minor blunder in their review. The game contains 14 multiplayer maps and not 9 as IGN originally claimed. More precisely it contains 13 maps as one of them appears in two versions (1on1 and DM). I attempted double jumps as well as circle jumps, but apparently the physics do not allow for such things. It is possible to make some rather violent rocket jumps which have a kind of "air-control". Moreover several of the weapons have a zoom function (Machinegun and Railgun)...

"to wait on" is also correct.

IMO If you wait on something, you are expecting it to happen soon (waiter, cashier, player to join you, etc...). If you wait for something, it's a wish projected into an infinite time frame.

Somebody at shacknews posted some news about the new tourney mode.

"Of particular note is the new 'tournament' system. From what I've seen, it automatically creates a tournament on a server, matching player against player automatically. Players waiting for their match can spectate the current match, or join a practice area (?!). Seems to work a bit like Rocket Arena 3 did (with separate areas and stuff). Sounds like a total winner to me."

Keep trying; the server is weird. It either won't show up, or it will show up fairly quickly.

In a nutshell, that screen shows a fairly simple bracket for 8 players and a list of players waiting/spectating. Doesn't do double elimination or anything advanced though.

A single elimination 1 vs 1 tournament. The winner of a match will move on to the next round until there is 1 champion. The eliminated players watch as spectators, or battle each other in a practice arena until the tournament is over. By default, the 'enter' key on the keypad joins the practice arena. When in a game, the 'x' key will bring up the tournament brackets.

If it works anything like RA3, it will be nice. Random practice parallel to a match will be cool. I'd hope it'd also enable the server to play several matches at the same time (like RA3), but it's probably too much to expect.

Yes. It's below the stairs that used to take you to the .. ceiling of the map. You can see that on some videos that are online.

It's a different game, with different weapons and different gameplay. Of course it'd change the dynamics of the map.

Are you saying edge players will feel right at home because it has a lightning gun? Dude, which version of quake2 did you play? :)

Chaingun was always a far fairer weapon because of the delayed spin-up and spin-down when firing and switching. What a shame we still have the lightning gun instead of it...

i can't really tell what looks promising,... the footsteps? i mean the one footstep sample that repeats itself sure sucks.

but well, i hope the best for q4, i just wish i could say i'm really impressed by what i've seen, because i want to play q4 somehow. but it just looks like a d3 upgrade to me...but i guess gameplay and maps will tell. we'll see.

the edge for q4 looks crap, its got 1 mh and 2 ya's so they stick the ya and mh in the same room. then in another room u got the rl rg and quad.

least after a few weeks people might stop playing it.

the quad should have been place at the middle of the arena ala q3dm6. The rail is way to easy to get a hold of, the idea of it in the water is that it is just a bit hardet to get. The place where the rail is together with the quadpos is also a campspot 2k.. I don't like that all.

Yeah, but I guess the reasoning behind the jump pad is that it makes you an easy target for some time. And also probably they were too lazy to put in proper water and do the extra animations (ie. doom3 where modders "finished" it fine though).

I don't think everyone's going to like this game, it's far from Q3. Feels more like a fast D3 with decent maps and netcode.
