5 players for a game thats 2on2 and 1on1 only? Sad to see them stop playing UT2004 but I guess it's understandable, if would probably do the same if I could earn money playing a different computer game...

Hopefully more people will start playing the game, the online numbers isn't impressive atm, still lower than Quake II :/

Oh, and what about a TDM-mod with new maps and the works?

There may later be mods which enable TDM for higher numbers of players. Anyway, these players will be sponsored by SK to help them compete in various duel events, so the number of people recruited really has little to do with TDM.

I think it's hilarious that teams and players are still just assuming that Doom 3 will be the game of the CPL World Tour.

My guess is that CPL are themselves doubting how well Doom 3 will be recieved by the spectators. It's already a "hit" among good players but I get the feeling that is because it is though that Doom 3 will get the World Tour spot and the big cash prizes... However if you look among casual players, the one that are of the biggest interest for CPL then you will probably see that it hasn't been recieved as the best MP-game out there...

Just look on the numbers of players online... Now you can come with any excuse you want (no linuxserver, trouble with the serverbrowser, etc) but the fact is most players dont even give games a second chance and for Doom 3 to be lacking in such important areas is a major setback imo... it's a big big step backwards from the BF, UT2003 or even Q3 and UT in that department, a game that is supposed to be the next big thing in online gaming should have a working linuxserver and serverbrowser when it's released...

Now many will probably say something like: "fsck the noobs they arent important" but guess what, I bet they are important to the sponsors and therefore important to CPL. No interest from "casual gamers" equals no interest from sponsors which should equal no interest from CPL... To me it's quite clear that CPL will make this World Tour to make CPL popular in more parts of the world than NA and in order to do this they should pick the most popular game, the one that will get the most interest from the public...

I just don't see Doom 3 as that game... :/

well the comparisons to the other games dont fit.

it took epic almost half a year, until they got a decent linux server version out, that was playable online. bf is afaik still windows only (not sure about that though) and when q3 and the original ut were released, it also took a while until the linux server binaries were released.

I know, but everyone knows that linuxservers are important so for a developer to just ignore that fact is stupid. We (gamers) should expect no less from the developers to include a working linuxserver, it's not 1999 anymore and a lot has happened since UT and Q3 was released and imo id should have learned about how important a standalone serverversion is for online gaming not to mention a working serverbrowser...

The same applies to the game itself, most of the casual gamers have moved on from the standard deathmatch that we have seen since the early days of Multiplayer-FPS so for a game to become really really big you need something new to attract new players... In my eyes Doom 3 doesnt have any new and attractive things for casual gamers, it's just the same old we have seen since Quake.

A game can't just be popular among the top gamers if you want it to spark sponsors interest, why should they sponsor a game that only the competitors themselves find interesting?

well no actually, for a game to be big, you just have to copy cs and polish the grafics and stuff. not to mention that also the basic principles of for example bf have its roots in qwtf and yeah, team fortress is pretty old. doom3 is at the moment the only top game with a mp that is purely based on deathmatch. and in my eyes that is a good thing, when almost every game nowadays has mission/team based multiplay parts, which bore (at least me) to death :)

about the linux binaries: a developement team has to make money with its product in the first place. you dont make money with a linux standalone server. so it is just natural that the developers first finish the game, and then the rest.

about the interest of the casual gamer: it will come, trust me on that :)

Well if Doom 3 can compete with the success of the WW2-games and CS then I'm the first to congratulate, but I dont think it will even be close after talking to alot of gamers who just play for fun...

Perhaps if a mod comes along that have maps suited for more than 4 players, CTF, TDM and something new as well... or perhaps a CS-clone ;) But then it wont be Doom 3 anymore I guess

i am still very sure that doom3 will be very succesful as a duel game, the times of tdm are over, but duel fps games are a strong alternative to all those cs clones.

but time will tell...

Ofcourse it sells alot, it's the topgame in Sweden too, but noone is talking about multiplayer when they are buying it, it's a singleplayer game. Atleast it's a singleplayer game to most of the people buying it, most haven't even tried the multiplayer... sort of the exact opposite of Q3 and UT ;)

gitzzz didnt like ut2k3 so he played a little q3 for fun before switching back to ut2k4. he always said he really liked q3 so i guess he is giving the new id game a try.

I'm not sure but CPL said that they were using a game that was going to be released in a few days or weeks when doom3 was alredy out. Half life 2 is alredy beeing "predownloaded" and will probably come out really soon. I'd hate to see CPL pick HL2 over Doom3, but it certainly is a posibility.

Edit: Just saw, on a hardware website, this link, its suposed to be from PCgamer, claiming that it will be out on September, 22th.

I think its sad that the CPL took Doom3 when there are fewer people playing this game than there are people playing alien vs predator 2. The take-up of this game has just been weak so far, no doubt about that.

The most popular duel game right now is UT2k4 (in terms of sheer numbers) OK the top 50 or so gamers are gonna play Doom3 with a slice of this $1,000,000 CPL prize money in mind, but average Joe from the street couldnt care less. Someone said previously, (and i'm paraphrasing) "no interest from the mainstream gamers = no interest from sponsors". If they're going to take a game that the minority play, take CPMA!!! It'll have the same commercial value...none

4k ppl playing ut2k4 isn't much to talk about either. selecting cpma would be a step in the right direction for the cpl :> I thiink the cpl needs to follow through and create that 1v1 game they talked about making years ago. All they have to do is make it free/extremely difficult/fun and they'd have tens of thousands of players, imo.

cpma is crap to watch purely as a spectator , i got drawn into Q3 by spectating qqon2k2 . In the meanwhile ive seen some cpma games and it just looks like very hectic spam . Its to fast to enjoy and noone who'se had any history with epilepsy can ever watch it .

Look at game sales rather, its a new game, and id games are known to need upgrades before anything, hell I almost cried when I heard q3 was going to need a 3d card.

It's not a good idea to look @ game sales when determining if there is a healthy community behind a game. Simple reason being that most people are buying the game for what it is...a SP experience.

So if 90% of Doom3's community is playing SP (as there are like 400 ppl playing MP @ any one time) and have little intention of playing the game's seriously lacking MP side, then u still feel it's worthy of all this attention from tournemants?

doom3 mp is still crap because there are no linux dedicated servers
there are very few good windows servers, most are listen servers by some gamers with poor hardware that therefor offer a really bad mp gaming experience...

but this will definatly change

one thing which is bad for doom is the 4 player limit...no filled deathmatch servers with many ppl playing and no random tdm...thats bad!
i dont like 1on1 that much, i am more into tdming but i am sure this will change

Have to agree with all these numbers lol. There are around 300-400 d3 players at evenings. UT2004 has 10 times (sometimes even more) players + even UT'99 has around 2000-3000 players. And EVEN UT2004 demo has more players than D3.

I don't think they are paying attention to the numbers so much. If the would then we would see ut99, q3 and sc in CPL tournaments instead of i.e. halo

agree. doom3 is just perfect as most people will need some serious hardware upgrade. and thats what the industry is looking for

it doesn't matter at all how many people play the game online. what matters is how many people will bother to train and travel for a tournament, and how many will spectate it. in those numbers, doom3 will easily beat any other game except CS. it's the competitive scene that counts, not the casual hobby players who don't compete and don't spectate and probably don't even know what CPL is. doom3 inherits the competitive q1/q2/q3 scene and that's just a huge advantage.

example: CoD has 20x more players online now than Doom3. But if the CPL simultaneously organises $100k tournaments for CoD and Doom3, how many foreign players will travel to Dallas in each game you think? many times more for Doom3 than CoD.

what matters is spectators. Imagine if someone rewrote the rules of football and all the pro footballers got excited and wanted to compete, but the there was noone to fill the stadiums....success???

If that's so, why isn't cod at the winter CPL ? They had over 10,000 spectators, not even Q3 pulled that amount in during its prime.

The sponsors want to show off thier hardware, so therefore they'll choose the newest game out to showcase thier shit. Wait until Half life 2 comes out and you'll see.
