She pretty much was guaranteed she would leave with all that stuff, there's no point in denying that much. She's leaps and bounds better than nearly any other female gamer besides Kornelia.

All these tournaments serve to do is push back the notion that females are capable of competing in the same tournaments that men are. The idea of girls playing in tournaments is becoming more and more of a novelty idea, like you're almost pets in a cage.

Not that any of you care, I realize that it was done for fun. However, as much as I've heard about some of you complain that females are not treated like they are as capable in gaming as males are, it seems awkward to me that so many of you would compromise that position for a tournament that seems to contribute to that notion.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of seeing female competitors right up there with their male counterparts. There is nothing that stops a female from being a top gamer, so these kinds of tournaments are a little off-putting due to the fact that they make it seem like there is. They make it seem like there has to be a side tournament for females because they're incapable of playing alongside men, when it's exactly the opposite.

You talk as if gaming has gotten to the point where its important or where anyone really gives a f--- about MALE competitors, let alone females... they don't. We are a small scene that is getting money handed to those who excell at the hobby so some hardware companies can get their name out.

If you think it's ok that id sponsor the Doom3 tourney with $60k, you have to accept this tournament having sponsors that feel it's well worth it. Both are a concequence of supply/demand and the work of those involved.

If I am not mistaken this tourney was created by the girls for the girls, where they got their own sponsors for it and everything. So why all the bashing. I also believe I saw one or two of the girls names in the Doom3 tourney as well. I also believe there was another doom3 shootout in the vendor area with a girl owning everyone. So they have done more to promote themselves than anything or anyone else. I think they did a bang up job and had alot of fun and at the end of quakecon...isnt that the most important thing?

They did a good job organising a tourney and getting sponsors etc, it was very well done and all credit to them. But the fact is they made a female only tourney, segregating themselves from the rest of the community. They moan about how ms quakecon was judged last year not on their skills but on looks and how they dont want that, they just as capable as the guys blah etc....so why not play with the guys and show that you are no different?

To you everyone is the same. Men and women are equal but not identical. The main reason for this tourney is to promote gaming to women, it generates more coverage by being women-only: you have a female winner and attract more women to compete than would compete in a mixed tourney.

At present the male gaming community is much larger than the female community so the standard is higher and I think women are less good at combat-type competition although I can't quite put my finger on why, a combination of slightly less spacial awareness and less of a rock/paper/scissors instinct perhaps (I think there are universal patterns in the dodge movements of Q3 players, fencing and martial arts to mislead the opponent, patterns that come from a pretty fundamental part of ourselves). Fewer women will want to play against men because it'll be boring getting beaten and in some cases the style of female competition is somewhat different, the aggression and maleness will put off more women.

You and others keep making a point about women players using feminine nicknames. Are you unaware of how 'adolescent-male' many gamers' nicknames are? Female gamers are a minority so both appear more extreme by being different from the majority and are to some extent pushed to define themselves by their minority status.

Attacking the validity of a dominant player's victory is pathetic, she is not responsible for her competitors, especially when the female community is doing its best to broaden itself so creating stronger competition. You want equality, can you not see that this is the best way to move towards that? More women gamers would mean better competition, more reason to practice and a larger pool of potential practice partners so that eventually maybe you would need to seperate the male and female tournies competely. If female gamers at present were forced to play in the main tournament only then I think female gamer numbers would decline. There's no reason to exclude them from the main tourney at present even though they have their own because they aren't having a significant impact and ultimately I'd like to see the main tourney be as competitive as possible so it should be open to all.

Generally I agree with many of your comments on ESR. I am really surprised by your position on this. MsQuakeCon is *clearly* there to promote female gaming. With the exposure these women get for winning a tournament, more women are sure to start playing. As the size of the female gamer community increases, so does the skill level of the top female gamers.

In golf, it was long time before women were even allowed into the clubhouses of many golf courses. But now, many years later (and after several good years of female-only tournaments) we are slowly starting to see women enter 'open' tournaments, alongside men.

The reason to support MsQuakeCon is that it will contribute to bringing more women into gaming. At LANs I often feel it's kinda pathetic to see a hall full of guys, and only 2 or 3 three women. This may be partially because of attitudes like yours.

Lastly, (and this is obvious) while it may seem like easy money for Ms.X, the money was not quite that easy for the other 23 female gamers. Your 'easy money' argument doesn't make sense.

There are many studies on the mental differences between men and women and they usually conclude that while women have better language skills for example, men have better spatial sight and orientation. There could be more relevant differences, e.g. reflexes.

Even if there were no differences at all, I still wouldn't see the harm in this side tourney. Lighten up! Girl tournaments create extra media attention which creates extra prizes. If there were no female tournament, guys would still not have a chance to win these prizes, so it's not like anyone's losing from it.

Tournaments like this make competitive gaming a lot more attractive for girls, which may lead to more girls competing, which may lead to girls emerging who can compete with the best guys, which will make tournaments like this obsolete after they've served their purpose. And if that never happens then at least they'll have made gaming a bit less nerdy.

The only thing that is ridiculous is the perceived prize of the tournament given the small numbers which represent a higher percentage of the population which would participate.

Your question is at the heart of the issue.

I doubt females are attracted to the (overwhelmingly) male-dominated arena of gaming, for a variety of reasons. The ones that *are* there are the pioneers. This kind of person is usually exceptional (Marie Curie, Margaret Thatcher, etc.). In order for more "average" kinds of women to get involved in competitive gaming, there must be exposure to 'those that have gone before', i.e. the pioneers. I reckon that is what this competition is all about.

The top gamers are male. It is no use pretending that the term 'top gamers' includes male and female, since by anyones definition, they (the top gamers) are still all male. Why is this so? I think I know, and that is the position I describe in this and other posts. If you have a better reason for this state of affairs, I would certainly be interested in hearing your side. It is quite possible I am missing something, I do it all the time :)

Note that it is only in *competitive* gaming that the demographics are this massively skewed. In general computer gaming terms, the womens market is quite large (pls someone who actually knows the figures, correct me), I think 40%+?

I think QuakeCon should have a "average player" tourney for less skilled boys/girls (If you are a world class player you can't play).. that way we won't see all the same names in the top 10. =)

I actually watched the Ms.QuakeCon finals on GGL video with shoutcast and it was really exciting. I was rooting for Ms.X to take it all and she did with some very close & exciting games.

The winner bracket fianls with Ms.X & Suga was really exciting with Suga getting some clutch frags with less than 5health. I didnt follow the whole tourney but the finals were two even skilled players that made for a good dual.

No one has claimed it has anything to do with biology. Most likely it has much more to do with sample size. Since so few females play competitively there is a pretty low probability that they would be as good as the males as a group.

Once/if females make up 50% of the competitive gamer population, it would be reasonable to see a more even distribution among top gamers.

when u look at proper sports, olympics is a good example atm, u dont see men competing with women in events, its always 'MENS' or 'WOMENS'

The main reason for the distinction between genders in olympic sports is because those are physical sports, where men obviously have an advantage due to superior strength.

In gaming however, there is no advantage unless you're a fat ass who gets tired of moving his/her mouse for 15 minutes at a time.

Some sports like archery, shooting etc aren't physical sports but they have men and women separated. In general there's very few sports where men and women aren't separated, even if they don't requre physical strength.

I'm not sure if it has been 'confirmed' or not but I don't give a shit. I can assure you that women don't have the spatial orientation or depth perception that men do. Maybe that's one reason.

this is a side tournament. it's a group of gamers with something in common self-organizing a tournament to determine the best of their class. all of the asians, or the jewish players, or the men over 6', or people over 30 years old could organize a similar tournament if they wanted, and they could try to find sponsorship, and put up their own website for it. etc. if there were interest.

Theres actually some quite nice girls there, especially if they would do a bit of excercise next to the playing.

But anyway, they look like a decent bunch, and not the typical 'girl gamer' image most people have in mind.

I'm very sad about the bitching going on here. Female tournaments have been around for quite some years already.

In every professional sport, being physical aimed or not there's a distinction between men and women. The media attention is just wat the entire gaming circuit needs..
The only reason i think people are bithcing is because they fail to understand that or they are muslim related :P

If you look at some sports there are no distinctions between the two. For example...racing...there is no benefit to being male over female...F1 if a women is good enough to drive in it they would compete on the same level as the male drivers, I can only recall 1 female driver in F1 (a few years back mind) and she competed on the same level as the men...although she did pay for the drive...and was pretty crap..point is though if they are good enough they should take part in exactly the same tournaments as the rest for the same prizes. What I dont like though is women who say they are not being treated the same as the male counter parts, to that I say If your good enough youll be treated and respected exactly the same.

Interesting example, here in Holland we have some women competing in race leagues. You even have Sarah Fisher driving in the Cart-series in the USA (the usa variant of F1, altho very bad :)

However, there are races/leagues for women only, they aren't just that common and small in number. Since there aren't many female drivers, it's hard to have a league for themselves.
Perhaps the budget and sponsors may be an issue on that level, i honestly don't know.

Just one thing that just occured to me, these female-only tournaments are actually helping esports considering the state it's in now. If it wants to get big (esports), it will need alot of publicity. Having a seperate tournament for females will generate for more media coverage/attention (CNN article for instance) than if they would just play and lose in a tournament for all genders.

Most of the girls there are hot, however as time goes on more girls will play also and you will get model like females playing, which will be refreshing to the gaming scene.

Also this girls only tourny was a good idea for the purpose to promote female gaming, which I hope brings in enough females, which will stop the "female only" tournaments and have enough females to play the REAL tournaments.

Apperantly you guys haven't seen Kornelia play .. she played 40 some odd matches on Friday afternoon in the activision booth .. and lost none. She is an awesome gamer and it's to bad the "lottery" passed her up cause i think she would of done fairly well in the tourney. And on the same note ... look at the play of suga ... this girl is 14 and she rocks. Ms.X is also awesome and did a great job in the tourney. My only problem with the tourney was the ra3 :p And if it draws attention to eSports then why should any of you bitch .. it will just generate more prizes for all gamers in the future and make us all one big happy family. I certainly expect the sponsors who provided the prizes feel Ms.X and ms.quakecon did more for them to deserve the money than toxic. Its about publicity and brand name recognition, etc, etc, for them and I haven't seen any articles on CNN or whereever about toxic getting a share of 5th place in the 1on1 and ctf tournaments this week.

The top heavy prize distribution at quakecon does suck though. For a competition thats meant to be for fun and not just about the top gamers, why do they always give the top 3 a huge stack of cash and no one else a penny?

The sponsors and id software loved the msqcon event. It will be much bigger next year because they liked the concept, not because the girl players asked them to make it big. If they want to donate prizes to a small side tourney such as this one, I don't think anyone would say no to them...but it is a good step for e-sports and it is not taking away any prizes from the main tournaments so I can't understand why some are so hostile about it

If the girls raised the prizes for there tourney why should it go to the guys ...? The main sponsor for the ms. quakecon tourney was GeekWearZ ... which to my knowledge did not sponsor quakecon with any prizes .. of course i could be mistaken ... in the same token ... why not give czm 20,000 and spilt the other 5,000 up to other people ... why flame the girls cause they got prizes for a tourney they organized. Again it's not liek quakecon set any of this up .. it's the girls themselves who set up the tourney, got the prizes and worked out all the deals to make it happen.
