his shootouts alone generate thousands of webpages with his name on it, plus almost all of them contain the 3-page long press-release with the detailed history of fatal1ty and his sponsors all put in the spotlights, let alone if he wins an event.

People will buy his motherboards if they are good, but for people to even know about those motherboards they need exposure. And who better to promote these motherboards - for a way less steep price than normal advertisement - than the motherboard's namesake himself?

Agreed, it doesn't have to do anything about buying a fatality mobo just because you love fatal1ty this and that much. But I'm sure that the mobo will be well suited for gaming since he's a pro gamer and it would be kinda strange if he put his name on a product that wasn't good for gamers. The fatal1ty stamp on the mobo will get the "hardcore" gaming crowd interested in it's performance and in the end, that's the whole point. Not to make fatal1ty look better but to sell a product to a limited customer segment.

Abit is known for their high quality motherboards (which are often aimed at entusiasts that like to overclock). If they keep the fatality line up to their usual standards and let fatality add features that gamers like (the top of the line nvidia onboard soundcard isn't far after audigy2 in quality but is seldom used on motherboards and is something I would like to se more often on motherboards), then the final products will be well worth the money.

he has played against players like infinite before @ UT2k4, he might lose some games but I don't think he'll drain the sponsors recourses that much ;)

ok enough is enough...so he makes money playing games...good for him. it is still a job. no matter what, you have to give it to him. most great pro sports players are arrogant as hell also, big deal. get over it. as for the games beating or scoring points, the purpose is for fun and to attract people to the booth so they can sell you on the products. it works and is a great marketing strategy.

either way, the thing that concerns me is the lottery system at qcon. what is scaring me is somehow someway, almost assuredly Fatal1ty and most of the other pros im sure will be picked for this. There will be upwards of 4000 people there from what i understand and only 170 names get chosen, if more than 5 pro players get chosen im thinking that the fix is in. I should hope not, considering this will be my first quakecon and would like to be chosen myself.

I prefer to see all the good players play. sorry, doubt anyone without a chance on winning will be put in... maybe it's just me, but I doubt they'll do a random pick.

thats fine if thats the plan...but ffs dont tell everyone it is a lottery type deal and rig it to be all pro only. thats my biggest issue is they are marketing this to be a random chance and then to see 40 pros picked would be a lie and unless you have no scruples either that would be a bad thing.

Imo, he's arrogant, but he also tells you where thinks are standing and you don't like to hear that all the time. For the rest... he's beeing a pro at this and since there ain't that much money he has to work hard, kiss a lot of asses and try to just be everywhere. hes made an effort to let ordinary games duel against arguably the worlds best (or most sucessful) FPS gamer. Those chances dont come often, and to add to it, hes giving prizes away too.

I agree, that by putting his name on it, they get a certain amount of exposure. And that sells motherboards. Abit is trying to further their association with gamers. Which isn't such a bad idea since the only reason to buy a brand new computer is for computer games. I think it's great that they are bringing much needed attention to the gaming scene. If the company makes a good gaming board, I just might buy one. I think the combination of a solid stable board + the Fatal1ty name is a winner. The only thing I ask for is not to sell us a budget mobo and make us pay extra for the Fatal1ty name. If this board, or line of boards, proves itself... This could turn out to be a very smart move on Abits part. And as for the fat flamers.. leave him alone. He plays video games for a living, something most of us wish we could do. And you have to admit.. the guy has some skills. :p

Boxers don't represent what we're trying to do. They don't have one boxer at the forefront making everyone think that every other boxer is exactly like them. It's flat out berating to the people he claims to be "supporting" when he says things like that he had only been playing 2 weeks and that's the only reason he lost, or that this tournament everyone's afraid of him and he's unbeatable. Even the fact that he holds onto his 11-(-1) win over ZeRo4 proves this. How many times has ZeRo4 wiped the floor with Fat? ZeRo4 obviously has many more wins over fatal1ty than vice versa, but he continually throws out that one time as if none of the others exist. That's the difference.

I've met John more than a couple of times, and I've LANed with him a couple of times. I respect completely what he's trying to do for gaming, and the fact that he seems to be succeeding. However, I detest the fact that he feels the need to berate his opponents or anyone else in gaming just to try and put a spotlight on gaming. Perhaps he has to do this to get anywhere? Perhaps. Does that mean we cannot dislike him for it? Absolutely not.

So far he's really done nothing for me, and I don't think he's ever going to. The biggest wheels turning are the ones started by the CPL, his 15 seconds to 3 minute highlights seen every couple of months on off-beat TV stations are not inflating professional gaming like he seems to think they are.

With all due respect to him as well, I do not feel that he is the kind of person who belongs at the forefront of this "movement", if you can even call it that. He has the goal, he has motivation, and he's doing a good job, but that doesn't change the fact that he has little charisma. Even as a gamer watching his segments on TV I still do not feel compelled to the cause at all, he just does not know how to talk to the media or appeal to people. His arrogance could work wonders for him if he came off in such a light that people found him entertaining to watch, such as a person like Mohammad Ali. Instead he comes off as a person who distances people from him, such as the "Pac-Man Guy". I'm sure people look at the idea of pro-gaming and go "cool concept", but when he starts talking about what he does and things, it becomes less interesting.

If you want a person who could really get people interested in the idea, you want to look at people such as Makaveli. Makaveli has the look and he knows how to talk to the press. He has charisma, and he's able to hold people's attention when he wants to because he displays a confidence when he talks. With no disrespect to John, if you had a pro-gaming segment on ESPN with an interview with Makaveli on it, I guarantee more people would be interested than if it was fatal1ty up there. It's the same thing as interviews for a job or a sales position: you're not selling the product, you're selling yourself. I could sell a person a can with my own feces in it and make it look like it was a bargain, just because I know how to talk to people. John just does not know how to do that. I appreciate what he's trying to do for it, but he just does not have the charisma that would even make his arrogance entertaining. His arrogance, rather than being humerous, comes off as misplaced and annoying.

His ambitions and work towards making pro-gaming a reality are appreciated, but most probably feel that he's just doing it the wrong way. You need a person with charisma and character to represent pro-gaming, not a superiority complex.

Sorry, no. What has brought Fat to the forefront of 1v1 gaming is that he is the best overall. I don't give two shits about Q3 TBFH - not about ZeRo4 either, because he's as normal as you or me. He's studying in Uni, playing a tournament here and there. This is not how he pays the rent.

Makaveli might have the charisma (although several prolonged rants against him have made me think otherwise), but for 1 he's repeatedly said he doesn't believe in the concept of e-sports and secondly, he's not the best.

What Fat does is exactly what other athletes do, but as you say, he lacks the charisma to make it seem like the natural thing to do (not to mention that he's the only one who even tries to emulate it).

Sure, you can dislike the stars of gaming if you wish, but it server little to no fucking purpose. It's the SK's, GitZzZ's and Fatal1ty's of this world that are going to break e-sports from a cool concept into reality. Take it or leave it.

Not when it comes to the general public. The general public doesn't care if he took 1st or last place in the past 2 tournaments, or if he's switched games a couple of times. The general public wants to see it as something they could enjoy watching and something they could see themselves doing. That's the only way to get them sitting in spectator spots or paying money to go to an event. The fact that Fatal1ty is a quality 1v1 player means nothing when the buying public doesn't know why that even matters.

Actually, the non-gamers are not interested by his results, and not in the game itself either, all that draws the attention is the fact that the guy is earning big bucks playing videogames.

Yes, and I've said that the segments are mainly about him, and really spark no interest in pro-gaming in general. They just go "oh he makes a living from gaming? that's nice", they don't feel compelled at all to see how he does it or how gaming tournaments work.

He was agreeing with me when I said no one cared what places he took, he says it right there. It's only a small interest in knowing he makes a living from it, but they don't learn how he does it or what tournaments he plays in, they don't see that it might be something they're interested in.

Until he's able to make it look like what he does is something people would enjoy watching, the idea of "pro gaming" is not going to grow, atleast not because of him.

John admits that he spends a lot of time playing games. He has also said that he's played games since the first doom or whatever. I'm sure he has spent a good chunk of his life indoors getting good at games. He has spent a lot of time doing it, and that is what he's good at. Now if he had spent
that time on the debate team or studying advanced literature, I'm sure he would come across differently.

It would be nice if he articulated things a bit better, but it's not a requirement. I do think though, if his goal is to promote the idea of progaming, that he should brush up on some of those verbal skills. Just for the camera. I'm sure that alone would make a big impact. He would get more sponsors, and the whole concept of progaming would be taken more seriously.

Sorry GitzZz is no star, and obviously has no desire to become one. He is way too passive in promoting himself. He might be as talented (or more) than Fatal1ty, but he has done little to nothing to promote the games he plays, outside the big tournaments. One could even argue that GitzZz has done little for the sport, but recieved more than he put in to. He is a main reason why UT2k4 is not bigger.

I may be wrong but the only time I can recall fatality losing to zero4 was at quakecon 2001. In all their other matches fat has won big time. Of course z4 improved a lot after babbages and fatality played a lot less q3 after that.

The only thing I want to say about this: I don't think ZeRo4 won more games over fatal1ty then vica versa. They have a very long history.

I definitaly would buy fat-hardware if it would be just as good or better as the other products on the market. I would prefer buying hardware way more if the hardware would be equal in performance. And about what has been said above I think that having a certain charisma or look towards the followers means absolutely nothing, for now that is. As long as he can stay at the top, remain his confidence and marketing the way he finds best for the gaming society will be just fine in the long run. In time, when hopefully gaming has evolved a few levels, I'm sure there will be plenty of sparking gaming interviews from other colorful players. However, I don't think that is either necessary or important for now as Fat is simply one of the foundations in a great chain of what to come.

By supporting Fatal1ty you are somehow furthering esports in general. I mean, if you buy his motherboards, ABIT might realize that sponsoring gamers can, in fact, be very rewarding. CPL is slowly bypassing Wimbledon in terms of cash prizes... this is going to be big.

Go get a printer-pad instead (it's cheaper and basicly the same).

I used to have a Fatpad sized printer pad. It only costs 10.95, but they're made from a very rough material and as soon as I replaced it with a fatpad, I saw positive results. For the extra 5-10 extra bucks you pay for a fatpad, you certainly get a lot imo. I bought 4 of them :). There's a reason why lots of pros use them, including fatal1ty himself.

I've met Fat 2 times, both at Quakecons. Also, I have seen him on several occasions when he was just hanging out and inter-acting with the general BYOC population He was a very polite and genuine person, he had no airs or fronts. Why anyone would be so petty as to say anything negitive about his photo or anything else for that matter is most likely speaking straight from their arse, and consequently this makes me suspicious of their motives.
